The release plate is not easily visible when the battery is plugged into the charger. A 2" square release plate is located underneath the indicator lights. To reach the release, grasp the charger in one hand to hold securely and the front of the battery in the other hand. Using your thumb on top and two fingers under the front of the battery below the charging indicator lights, press the plate (only one end of the plate will depress) as you pull on the battery to slide it off the charger. When you are recharging the battery, be sure the battery clicks securely into place or it will not charge.
Could be better explained, but is simple. Just grab the front of the battery and press the under release plate as you pull the battery off the charger. The charger itself is very lightweight and usually has to be held in one hand as you pull and press the release on the battery.
More Info: To check the charge, press the left most button beside the indicator lights of the battery. One to four lights will light up to indicate the charge level. 4 lights is full charge.
Read your booklet to understand the series of flashing lights located on the charger. One light does a quick 'test', one indicates 'charging', one indicates 'charged', one indicates a 'bad battery'. If the battery is not locked securely into the charger, the charge indicator lights will not light up. Read Less

I had the same problem.
Press the release by reaching in as far as you can. The hinge point is on the end toward you and it will not release unless you put the force on it ~ 1.5 inches in from pivot point.

Answer:
A Ryobi 40v lithium ion battery will work in other Ryobi 40V LiO devices of the same generation. Generally a Ryobi will not fit other brand or other voltage devices as each mfg has their own connectors, and vice-versa. Ie, Ryobi and DeWalt, etc, batteries and devices are not interchangeable.

That is a great question and I wish it was. For me the one battery will last for several weeks of trimming on hedge and string trimmer. I guess they want you to spend for battery too, maybe the demand is not there. I would have purchased in store if it was available.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by So far, so good Bought the Ryobi 40-volt lithium-ion cordless hedge trimmer for my wife because she has the Ryobi 40-volt lithium-ion cordless string trimmer and could interchange the battery. So far, she has been satisfied with the products and the battery life. My ratings of "Excellent" are based on the fact she is not unhappy with the hedge trimmer. If she were unhappy, I am sure I would have heard about it. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi fan adds another 40 volt tool to his arsenal Ryobi's 40 volt 24" hedge trimmer has provided me with another way to speed up my weekly gardening tasks. It is powerful as my previous corded hedge trimmer but without the need for finding a nearby electrical outlet or extension cord long enough. This makes my weekend yard chores of trimming and cleaning up my large bushes and hedges no longer as dangerous since I have cut into my extension cords while trimming bushes more than once. I now have a Ryobi 40 volt battery powered yard tool family consisting of their 16" lawn mower, string trimmer, leaf blower, and the great 24" hedge trimmer; all making my yard upkeep speedy, quiet, and almost at zero cost. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good reach Was pleased to see that it came with a plastic guard for the blade teeth and the sweep for the top of the blade. This was the first time I've seen the sweep and it works nicely. Definitely would spend the extra money for the charger and battery since it's more expensive to buy them separately. It's light enough to use for areas above shoulder height but apparently wasps don't like to be disturbed that have a nest inside the bush or hedge. Got stung by a couple of the occupants of a nest I was not aware of. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Tool! I picked up a Ryobi 40v string trimmer earlier this summer and it worked well, so I purchased this hedge trimmer a few weeks later. It trims great and the battery life exceeds my expectations! August 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great trimmer. Very pleased with the power generated by the battery. Battery life is incredible. Trimmer comes completely assembled and ready to go. Cuts through everything effortlessly. I already had a battery and charger for my Ryobi leaf blower. No more hassles with electric cords. Really love this trimmer. Strongly recommend it To anyone who wants a powerful trimmer. August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very pleased. Used this hedge trimmer at my home and my daughter's. Took about 45 minutes. Did a very good job and the battery was only about half used. Couldn't be more pleased! September 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by http://m.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-24-in 40 Volt Lithium ion Cordless Hedge Trimmer Hedge trimmer has worked great! 40 volt supplies the power to get the job done. August 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use, a little heavy This was a great investment. Compared to other models, this product has a long cutting area and good power cutting through branches. It made quick work of my hedges. The only problem with the hedge trimmer is the weight. The battery is fairly heavy making the whole unit heavy on one side, but I don't have much to cut so it is fine. Not having the cord makes it easy to just take out and start trimming. If you have the 40 volt battery on another yard tool, this is well worth getting. August 25, 2016
