Customer Reviews

3 in. x 18 in. Portable Belt Sander is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job I purchased this sander last year to refinish a porch railing (8" wide by 50' flat maple) and a hardwood picnic table that badly needed fresh coats of spar urethane. Price was a major consideration, as many of the high-end belt sanders are close to 4x as expensive. The little Ryobi did an admirable job of removing several layers of old polyurethane quickly and with little effort. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for floor or deck sanding, but for smaller projects this sander works quite well. Pros: Powerful, easy to use, belt changes easily Cons: Collection bag does not attach securely and "leaks" dust, dust buildup around belt track, imprecise belt tracking adjustment.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Powerful, but dust collection issues. I'm used to an orbital sander so it took a bit to get used to how powerful this is in comparison. Very easy to change belts and handles well. I'm currently using it to refinish an old hardwood floor and it's fast and does a good job except the dust is not coming out the exhaust hole. I originally tried hooking it up to a shop vac and then tried the dust bag that came with the sander. The dust doesn't go into the bag but just blows out the front & back of the sander. I've had to stop every few minutes to vac up what was left on the floor. I see a few other reviews mention the same problem. If the dust collection system worked this would be an excellent sander.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value I used this sander so far to sand my deck...roughly 30x15. Performed pretty good for a $50 sander. I didn't really have any problems with tracking or any other belt problems others have mentioned here. My only complaint would be that the dust collector doesn't work very well. Other than that the sander worked good. I have some other decking I have to sand and stain so we'll see how it holds up...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not for the beginner, but good sander... This sander has great power and the belt change system is easy, but the alignment system can take some tinkering before your ready to tear into your workpiece. This sander is fairly well balanced and has a good rpm to compensate for it's lacking variable speed. The sander would benefit greatly from variable speed to make it easier to control and help people not familiar with a belt sander, but for the price i suppose it shouldn't be expected. The dust collection works suprisingly well. No dust collection on any tool is dust-free, that being said, I've seen and used far worse dust collection then this tool.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Has its flaws It is cheap at its selling price but still has good power for sanding. I ran into problems with the alignment changing as the sander was used and if it shifted toward the left the belt would get chewed up and if it shifted to the right the uneven pressure on the belt would create groves in the wood. I would not recommend this for anything close to finish sanding no matter what grade of sandpaper is used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse This sander is a workhorse! I sanded a 12X30 deck with this sander. Previous owner laid carpet on the deck, and much to my surprise when I pulled up the carpet....FLOOR GLUE! This bad boy sanded all that floor glue off and is still hungry for more. I would highly recommend this sander to anyone. I did not have any problems with any of the belts as some have said in their reviews. Works better than I anticipated. Do not hesitate with this Ryobi sander.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK for occasional use. It's an OK belt sander for its price. It's good for occasional use, probably not every day use. The sanding belt walks left and right more than I'd like. I find myself constantly adjusting the alignment on it. A couple times I was able to stall the belt while the drum keeps spinning. But hey, it got the job done without breaking the bank.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Belt Sander This is a great belt sander. I used it to strip off all the old paint on my deck and smooth out rough spots. I used 50 grit sand paper. I liked how easy it was to change sand paper and it tracked well. It had plenty of power and the price was right. Renting one didn't make sense as I needed it for a few weeks as I worked on it after work and weekends.
