I'm used to an orbital sander so it took a bit to get used to how powerful this is in comparison. Very easy to change belts and handles well. I'm currently using it to refinish an old hardwood floor and it's fast and does a good job except the dust is not coming out the exhaust hole. I originally tried hooking it up to a shop vac and then tried the dust bag that came with the sander. The dust doesn't go into the bag but just blows out the front & back of the sander. I've had to stop every few minutes to vac up what was left on the floor. I see a few other reviews mention the same problem. If the dust collection system worked this would be an excellent sander.

I purchased this sander last year to refinish a porch railing (8" wide by 50' flat maple) and a hardwood picnic table that badly needed fresh coats of spar urethane. Price was a major consideration, as many of the high-end belt sanders are close to 4x as expensive. The little Ryobi did an admirable job of removing several layers of old polyurethane quickly and with little effort. I'm not sure I'd recommend it for floor or deck sanding, but for smaller projects this sander works quite well.
Pros: Powerful, easy to use, belt changes easily
Cons: Collection bag does not attach securely and "leaks" dust, dust buildup around belt track, imprecise belt tracking adjustment.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by jackofall29 not for the beginner, but good sander...
This sander has great power and the belt change system is easy, but the alignment system can take some tinkering before your ready to tear into your workpiece. This sander is fairly well balanced and has a good rpm to compensate for it's lacking variable speed. The sander would benefit greatly from variable speed to make it easier to control and help people not familiar with a belt sander, but for the price i suppose it shouldn't be expected. The dust collection works suprisingly well. No dust collection on any tool is dust-free, that being said, I've seen and used far worse dust collection then this tool.

I purchased this sander to replace my 35+ year old Sears belt sander that finally decided to die mid-project a couple of weeks ago. Although it may not live as long as the old sears sander the fact that the price was about the same as I paid over $35 years ago (when gasoline was about $.40/gallon) and that it is MUCH easier to adjust and KEEP the belt adjusted, it is half the weight, and I think it runs faster all serve to make it a GREAT value. While the sanding track is the same size, the overall profile of the machine is smaller making it more versatile for close quarters, getting closer to edges, and less storage space needed. For the cost, it is a much better value than the great tool it replaced and I am very pleased with it.

It is easy to swap out the belts, it sands great. The only thing that is deceiving is the filter bag...this doesn't really do anything as far as I can tell. You will still have sawdust flying in the air. Aside from that its a great purchase!

Can't beat the quality for the price on this sander. It's worked great for many home projects so far. My wife uses it with ease and it fits both our hands well.

Belt sander worked fine for awhile; reasonable power for the size and price. Motor burned out after about 3 months' occasional use, not reparable or returnable. If you have a major project or plan to use the tool a lot, I'd recommend investing in a higher-quality power tool.

The title says it all...for small to moderate sanding projects your can't buy a better belt sander for the price. It works great with all levels of coarseness and at all angles. Only small complaint is that the bed tracking adjustment is pretty imprecise but not to the point that it takes away from the effectiveness and quality of the tool. Another great Ryobi tool!
