A good start is to buy a pack of each grit and you'll be stocked for a long while under normal use and you'll have the one you want instead of having to go get a different belt. Use each grit on wood metal paint etc real quick and you'll be way ahead of the curve. Read Less

For real heavy duty sanding, either stripping paint or varnish, or really rough wood you need to start with 40 or 50 grit belts (check amazon.com for price and availability), then smooth out to your desired texture with 80, 100 and 120 grit, or you can skip the 100 step if you need to go to 120, For a really smooth surface, either hand sand with 150 or 180 grit, or use a random orbit finishing sander with 180 grit. Belt sanders are meant for really rough surfaces or heavy duty stripping. If you're stripping latex paint, remove the belt frequently and check the belt rollers for build up of melted latex dust. Carefully remove any globs of melted dust from the rollers.Latex dust will melt and clog up everything that's not sealed. I'm buying a new sander because the belt release is jammed up and I can't change the belts. One more piece of advice, don't run the sander for more than an hour continuously. I burned up 3 sanders in 3 years doing a large amount of stripping all at one time. The sander I'm replacing has lasted over a year and is still working fine except for the belt release, being used only 40 minutes to an hour before taking a cool off break. Read Less

You can use this product on a wooden floor how ever you need to be careful to be be consistent to prevent high and low spots. This product is fairly aggressive. You may be better off using a large disk floor sander.

Yes, but I would need to know more about your situation before I would recommend serious work with a belt sander on metal, an angle grinder may be a much better tool of choice.

I have a homemade 1x30 that works pretty good but the 1" isnt really wide enough to get the consistency across the length of the blade and the thing is absolutely DEAFENING. I got this and have both problems resolved, its mild even without ear plugs and the 3" good to go platten is a lot easier to get the whole thing almost at once, the only down side is the sander body obstructing the right side so have to do the other side of the blade edge down which just takes a little more concentration. Happy grindin'! Read Less

I changed the belt and could not keep it tracking correctly. So being the genius man I am after trying everything I read the directions. Yep I had the belt on backwards. Check the arrows on your new belt before you put it on will make your blood pressure a lot lower!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top Flight Belt Sander I am a DIY and never used an electric belt sander before. I am getting ready to sell my house and had to unstick seven doors and cabinets. The belt sander made quick work of it and the air filter that comes with it captured well over 90% of the dust. I was extremely pleased and impressed with the quality and maneuverability of this product. I was able to use it without even reading the instructions. Very intuitive. I believe it to be a very smart buy and at a very competitive price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use out of the box/Great Value Great value for a belt sander. Wife saw a table in a Pottery Barn magazine, and asked if I could build it. Didn't have a belt sander and needed one to really smooth out the table top and bring everything together. This sander was up for the task, and made for very easy work smoothing everything out. Ended with a fine belt and the table is so smooth. The sander has a good amount of torque, but was light enough that it was very manageable. Excited to break this baby out again soon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase for the money! This thing rolls like no ones business. I've used off and on for over a year until recently. I purchased some old oak fencing that was painted white. The boards have seen better days. I'm cutting up the boards to turn into herb boxes and wanted to sand them down to be painted. This sander cranked on like no tomorrow. Never missed a beat, never heated up, just keep on ripping off the paint. I used the diablo belts, I believe 50 grit. Those are great also! Used only one for dozens of boards. This sander, though not commercial, worked wonderfully and I would not hesitate to buy it again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard Working Sander Used to sand a 1000 sq. ft. deck. 18 inch belts sometimes slide off and it doesn't do the best job capturing the sawdust, but it does the job. I've been very impressed at how much it can do for the price. I ended up just opening the dust catcher because after the first bagful it didn't capture any. It locks on, which relieves stresses. It does get hot over time. The cord can get in the way- I'm sure that is in part true for all sanders, but over 1000 sq ft I only sucked it up 2 or 3 times and it was easy to get out and did not cause major damage (minor damage, for sure, but no exposed wires).

I'm not really a review stuff kind of guy, but I bought this sander in a pinch. I read the other reviews and they were accurate. This machine does in fact have a problem with dust collection, but you just can't fault it on performance. I am making outdoor cedar products, and have really worked this thing over the last 2 weeks. It runs cool, belt tracks straight, and belt change is easy. All in all it is above the expectation for the price.

I have a 5 ft ... great for small to medium jobs around the house (but not for day to day pro use). I have a 5 ft teak patio table I was able to sand down to fresh wood and oil in under an hour. For approx. $50 it's a no brainer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ryobi sander The sander is not very heavy and therefore it is easy to hold in different angles for longer periods. It is powerful enough to propel itself across the wall, so hold on to it.
