Stephanie, there should have been a JS4814 blade in the box with the jig saw. If there wasn't then go back to the Service Desk at the store where you purchased it and ask for one. I bought a package of Bosch T501 blades in addition to the one blade that came with the saw so that I could saw other types of materials. This jig saw is quite versatile and easy to use.

Depends on the length of the blade you are using, but with the Bosch "xtra clean" blade you could easily cut maybe a 2" thick lumber like a 2 x 4 stud.

Answer:
The thickness of wood a jig saw can cut through typically is limited by the blade itself. I have used mine to cut an inside hole in a 1.5" thick plywood glue up. the saw was not taxed at all, the cut line was nice and straight...

I managed to slowly cut through a 2" thick piece of zebrawood so it can do that but I wouldn't recommend it unless your very patient and don't need a clean cut. The maximum thickness you can cut through depends mostly on the blade length. I used the stock blade to cut through the 2" zebrawood

I would not cut anything more than 3/4 inch pine. Also, expect the plug to fail within the first 20 working hours and the table to constantly loosen.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 67 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful saw I had bought one of these for myself and just loved it. I do a lot of woodworking. My brother does also so when he saw the information on it he mentioned he would like to get one. He lives in an area that has no Home Depot. I surprised him by buying him one and having it shipped to him. Got their before the scheduled time. He also loves it! Easy to handle, cuts exact. Use it for arched cuts etc. Built the pictured chair and side table with it. March 11, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Much better than I was expecting! I went into my local Home Depot to pick up a Ryobi JS651L jig saw, sadly there wasn't one to be had in the store, and being in the middle of a project, with a busted 15+ year old saw, I needed one NOW... I liked what I saw on the floor model, so I took a shot. I had looked at this one previously, and was concerned about the blade lock / release mechanism using a swing arm and slot. I had read reviewers complaining that it was too hard to use. I guess if you have serious arthritis issues maybe. I managed to be able to swap the blades around pretty easily. Although the spring does tend to eject the blade with some force once released. The saw itself is much more powerful than I had expected, and paired up with premium blades, this saw follows the line you point it at VERY well. Unlike my old saw, where the blade would not follow the line very well no matter what blades you used... I also liked the light feature on the saw which helps illuminate your cutting path. Even in a well lit shop, this provided enough contrast to make cutting easy... While I would have preferred the other model for 2 reasons, #1. Inclusion of a storage case. I know a lot of guys like to have their tools loose. I like mine in cases, with the accessories close by or if possible in the case. Keeps my shop more organized.. I also would have liked to have the ability to use U shank blades as well as T shank. Although blade holding on T shank does seem more secure... For the money, I can live without U shank blades, And I already had a spare tool bag I am now storing this in... So it really is a win / win for me... I would knock this a bit harder if I had to spend money on buying a tool bag to store this in... February 25, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very Happy Bought this to cut a template for making plaques. Liked the variable speed feature, cut nicely, and effectively. January 14, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Cheap and not durable at all This is what I get for going for cheap power tools. I have only used this Jigsaw maybe three times and after using it on a door the blade roller assembly busted. The tiny proprietary rivet holding the roller on snapped and now the roller will not hold the t shank blade straight. It goes crooked. What a lousy piece of garbage that has not delivered on performance and definitely not on durability. I will try to see if I can get this warrantied or at least get a new roller assembly but for now, know that you must stay away from cheap power tools. They are cheap for a reason. January 4, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Read the manual, y'all Like many other reviewers, I could not insert the blade. So I looked at the strange piece of paper with words all over it that came in the box...I believe it's called a "manual." TO INSERT THE BLADE, THE ORBITAL SELECTOR MUST BE SWITCHED TO SETTING #3. To be fair, this is a dumb requirement that to me indicates lazy design; at the very least, there should be a notice of this requirement stamped on the tool itself. But really, read the darn manual, people. Still gets four stars, because once the blade is in, it's a really really great tool (especially for the sale price of $29.99) November 11, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Warranty not as stated I purchased this jigsaw two years ago and only used it a couple of times. Two weeks ago I was cutting through some thin plywood. It was cutting fine until I was almost done. The saw got slower and slower, and then stopped, never to go again. This Ryobi tool has a 3 year warranty which states that parts and labor will be covered with no charge to the customer. This is stated on the Home Depot website as well as the Ryobi Tools website. After having the tool repaired, I received a bill for $15. This was a minimum charge for the labor. This is not what the warranty states. I am disappointed that this minimum charge was never explained to me in writing or orally. March 14, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Blade insertion problem fixed? The blade insertion problem may have been solved based on the revised instruction manual dated 2/14 as stated by a previous reviewer.....the new instruction manual does indicate the need to switch to position three. Being one of the individuals who had the blade insertion problem and returned the unit prior to that date I hope that is the case....I certainly did not see that detail in the instructions. Even the HD folks couldn't insert the blade. Being that inventory takes sometimes years to clear through the system I highly suggest bringing a blade to the store and try inserting it prior to purchase to see if it meets your needs. Also check the display model number with the model number on the box being purchased November 17, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very nice jigsaw for an outstanding price I needed a cheap jigsaw to cut a counter top. This one was only $29.95, so I gave it a try. I am impressed with this saw. It cuts smooth, has a very slick bit change mechanism, has good power, is relatively light weight, feels durable and is a great value. The only complaint I have is that some of the parts feel a little cheap. Yes, I need to remember that this is a very inexpensive tool, so I gave it four stars with four for quality and five for value. I would recommend this to someone who is looking for an inexpensive jigsaw that is very easy to use and feels like it will last a long time. October 28, 2013
