It has to be run within 30 degrees total(15 deg left and 15 deg right) from flat position. Also, has to be set flat when stored. While the engine is running, if you tilt it past those angles (for about 1 minute) then oil starts leaking into the combustion chamber (thick white smoke runs out from the exhaust and chokes/kills the engine), then thru the carburator and into the area where the round filter lies. It created a huge mess..... oil dripping, have to wipe out the oil around the carburator, remove the filter and squeeze hard for the oil to come out, and to make things worse, you will have to check the oil level (most likely you will need to replenish the oil that leaked out), then wait for about 30 mins before you can restart it (if it can start!). This alone is a tremendous flaw on this trimmer and makes it impossible to operate. For me it was a huge time-waster...... just a nightmare!
Had to go thru 3 units that got ruined because of the inevitable tilting. Even if you do not tilt it much (which in my experience is almost impossible to accomplish), there will always be some oil escape into the combustion chamber (without even noticing it) - that alone will prematurely reduce any remaining life this unit would have had if it were operated perfectly.
I WOULD STRONGLY ADVISE to avoid this trimmer by any means - it has inherent design flaws, is cheaply made, it's anti-productive (will spend more time peddling to fix it than actually running/using it), it's time & money waster!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Do NOT buy ! I purchased this trimmer to replace our older Troy Built trimmer that I could no longer buy parts for, bug mistake ! First off; stayed with a 4-cycle gas so my wife and daughter didn't have to worry about mixing gas if I wasn't around, turns out it doesn't matter as neither one of them has ever been able to get this thing to start, it is often near impossible to pull the starter cord and really pulls back hard for some reason. NEVER had this problem with our old trimmer. Second is the design of the line feed; can't seem to go more than about ten feet before it stops feeding and you have to disassemble the head and reload the string which is a real pain ( two separate lines through two different holes, all while holding the two pieces of the head together then trying to install the screw that holds it all together. : / ), obviously the design engineers at Ryobi have never actually used a string trimmer in their lives. Buying the electric version would have eliminated the starting problem, but them replacement batteries cost as much as a new trimmer... I'm sure my neighbors will be happy when I return this for another trimmer so their kids won't have to cover their ears any more ; ) September 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by More power, easier start I bought this edger/trimmer because I wanted something with more power. The 4 stroke part helps with simplisty. The device is heavier but love how it chews right through st Augustine grass. Starts real easy and runs good so far. August 30, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Biggest Piece of Junk I ever bought Horrible product. Problematic from day one. The feeding mechanism is terribly designed, I spend more time winding up line than I do cutting weeds. The motor faulty and cheap, fails to start, then dies all the time. I have had a electric weed eater for 18 years and I wanted to upgrade to a gas one. This one was a horrible mistake. It now takes me more time to weed eat my lawn than it did with an electric one. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PRODUCT!!! In fact, I will never buy a Ryobi product again because of this thing. I had enough of it today and just plain dumped it in the trash after a year. NEVER BUYING RYOBI AGAIN!!! July 27, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not Good Initially it ran decent but as time progressed, performance degraded until it finally failed to start. I followed all of the instructions provided in the manual to the letter. Finally, I returned the product to Home Depot and they issued me a refund. Not recommended. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Gas trimmer like the way it starts so easy and the bump feed is a feature that I like better than having to stop and reload the string. The weight and balance makes it easy to handle August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worst product ever Upgraded from a 2 stroke. On my second ryobi wirhin days and i hate it every day. Will be tossing my fathers day gift as the trinmer is useless. August 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RYOBI TRIMMER The quick connect feature was easy to master. I followed the clear instructions, filled the tank with gas, and the trimmer started on the first pull. I have never had a grass trimmer that consistently starts on the first pull. This one has a perfect record, after probably 10 times used. I purchased the extended warranty, because these tools never seem to last. Maybe this one will be different. July 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very happy Being 4cycle it starts easily. Plenty of power. I also purchased the brush cutter attachment. I am completely satisfied with both items . July 26, 2016
