I bought this in conjunction with the 40v mower. I think this trimmer is a fantastic tool. The 40v battery gives it PLENTY of power and i can quickly trim the whole yard. I love the 1 button on system (just like the mower) so you can quickly hit scattered spots. I think the weight is pretty good but the front to back weight ratio could be a little better but thats not a big deal. Overall i think this was excellent for the price and the 40v L-ion batteries are a fantastic REPLACEMENT for outdated gas powered yard tools. I have 0 regrets.

I am writing this review in response to the customer that posted on June 27th.
You do not need to flip the trimmer over to feed the line. In the instructions it tells you that the line auto feeds.
-If you need more simply let go of the trigger
-wait 2 seconds then press the trigger again.
-Do this twice and it will start the auto feed 1/4 inch at a time.
I never flip it over unless I am replacing the line. I know that the system uses .065 and recommends that however I did bump this up to a thicker line and it works WAY better. It is a bit heavier line so I assume it may spin slower, but that being said it will not be noticeable and will cut the line less and last longer.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Doug Can't keep up with itself
The trimmer itself is not able to keep up with the power the battery back can deliver: the string is light and flimsy, and worst of all, the motor burns out after perhaps 8 hours of total use, only using it about 1-1/2 hours per day. If it can't be run at full power without destroying itself it is a poor design. After using the excellent 40 volt hedge trimmer this was a severe disappointment.
Perhaps if enough of us buy one, let it ruin itself, and return it in a week or two to get our money back, Ryobi will decide to design and build it as they should have.

I had a specific purpose for buying the Ryobi 40v weed eater. I own property about an hour from the city and got really tired of carrying gas for the lawn mower and gas for the weed eater. I did not think it would last to do all the weed eating I have to do there but what a plesent surprise. I did not even pull out the push mower to trim I left it all to try the weed eater out. It actually did very well. It trimmed everything I through at it and then some. I only gave it 4 stars because I believe the line feed system could be better but thats minor. Great product.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Cactus Overall OK
I bought the hedge trimmer with the 40v and seen this was on sale online for $ 60 so I figured I would give it a try.
Pros: No gas or oil to mess with. Fast Battery charge. Quiet.
Cons: No bump feature takes to long to feed line. Spent more time feeding line then trimming but I have alot of fence. Battery drained quick due to more time feeding line than trimming. Took 2 charges to due my 1/2 acre. Line jammed twice perhaps from taking on too much grass. Could do without the edger, makes it harder to fit into tight areas.
Would probably work better if you had a small yard with no metal fence to drain the line. Would work awesome as a bump trimmer. I will most likely go back to my gas trimmer and use this one for a back up.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MikeG Great product if you already have the 40V batteries, a little pricey if you don't
Since I already have the 40V mover and my 18V string trimmer was on its last leg, the purchase of the 40V string trimmer (no battery/no charger) was an easy decision.
Worked perfect right out of the box, and has power to spare. The 13" string length is a big advantage over the string length on my old 18V. A bit heavy, but well balanced, so it's pretty easy to use for longer periods.
Two minor complaints: the string feed mechanisn needs some work, as you lose tension on the spool the wraps tend to intertwine and the line won't feed, and the battery position makes it difficult to raise the handle to a comfortable position when using the trimmer as an edger.
All in all, a major improvement over my previous 18V string trimmer.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by SteveC3H8 Almost a great trimmer
The line does not advance automatically. The no-bump mechanism doesn't work well. You have to stop, turn the trimmer upside down, then mess with a little button on the side of the head, then push and pull the line to get it to advance. WHY is it so difficult for someone to design a trimmer that feeds the line well? If Ryobi could fix this problem, this would be the best trimmer hands-down for any homeowner with a moderate-sized yard. The 40V battery and drive system offers incredible power and duration. JUST FIX the HEAD!!!!

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by madforfishing good buy
i was skeptical at first, but considering this is a battery powered weed whacker i am pleased with it i have a lot of acres and use my gas powered whacker for most but i love this tool for a quick little spruce up around the house after every mow. i can trim around the whole house garden and driveway on one charge and it doesn't sling crud all over the place like my gas one.
another good feature, i can use my echo line to re spool the cartridge saves me from having to buy the expensive refills.
