Customer Questions & Answers

Is this trimmer compatible with expand-it attachments?

I have a pole saw, cultivator, and string trimmer attachments that are part of the ryobi expand-it system. Can I use those with this trimmer? Or is it a different system?
Asked by: inkster
Ryobi did just come out with an expand-it system but Ryobi tells me that the 40 volt trimmer edger can't be modified for a different head. The expand-it system has a trimmer attachment but it is not an edger. I have not asked Ryobi nor have I gone to Home Depot to look at the new trimmer and see if it is the same socket. Ask a rep at Home Depot or an e-mail to Ryobi might be the best thing to do. I don't think the two are supposed to match but you never know. Good Luck

What is the difference between the 18 volt and the 40 volt

Asked by: george
I would guess both the power it puts out, and the time between charges.

Are .080 and .065 line useable and covered under warrenty in this trimmer? I see conflicting information in the description and manual. Thanks

Example: I have looked at the manual and can't figure out what I did wrong.
Asked by: Grasscutter
I'm not real sure what your question is regarding the warranty. Ryobi makes replacement spools loaded with eather .80 or .65 line. for their auto feed single line cordless trimmers. The replacement spools package states which trimmers they are compatible with. My 40v trimmer/ edger ( the one with the rotating head w/wheel ) came with the .65 line, I replaced it with the .80 line and it performs a lot better. Hope this helps.

How does this model compare to the 2012 model RY40000?

Variable speed switch and auto feed failed on the unit before 3 years......got a replacement (RY40001) under warranty. The replacement unit lasted 1 year before the same 2 things failed. Is this just a feature of this trimmer/edger ? The replacement only has the original warranty which means no warranty. Nice since it lasted only 1 year. Where is the quality control on theses???? Why is there no 2 string version of the trimmer/edger? I know their is a trimmer that has 2 strings, but then I have to purchase an edger attachment.

How hard is this to restoring had some that were set us pain

Asked by: Bob601
Hi Bob! Remove the battery pack. Remove the spool from the string head. NOTE: Remove any old line remaining on the spool.Cut a piece of line approximately 9 ft. long. Use only 0.065 in. diameter monofilament line. Insert the line into the anchor hole in the upper part of the spool. Wind the line around the upper part of the spool clockwise, as shown by the arrows on the spool. Place line in the slot on upper spool flange, leaving about 6 in. extended beyond the slot. Do not overfill. After winding the line, there should be at least 1/4 in. between the wound line and the outside edge of the spool. Replace the plastic retainer, spool, and the spool retainer. The other options is that you can also purchase spools that are pre wound with string, the part number is AC14RSLA and can be purchased at your local Home Depot store.

40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Shaft String Trimmer/Edger - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Versatile trimmer/edger I bought this trimmer one month ago to replace the same trimmer I purchased 3 years ago because of the investment I had already made in battery and battery charger. This trimmer is ONLY for light home garden work - it will not stand up to heavy trimming, but is an excellent edger and great for trimming around shrubs and trees. It is a great choice because of its light weight. The only weak point is the poor Chinese manufactured battery, which I have reviewed separately and is the sole reason I cannot recommend this product to others. I'm working to convert all my yard gear to operating off the Ryobi 40v battery. I have two batteries, the mower, blower, edger and hedge trimmer. I downsized to very small yard, so I haven't even begun to tap the charge of one battery by mowing, edging, and blowing the debris. For this trimmer, I liked that I could order off the website without the battery, since I have enough of them. Out of the box, it took me about five minutes to put a couple of parts together and review how to make the trimmer switch to edger. I really like its clean cut, and the easy way to get more string out as I cut. Thanks, Ryobi!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Good last year when new, not good now I reviewed this last year when I first started using it. It was excellent. Really, the battery is still excellent and lasts a long time. The variable speed trigger switch is no longer variable on the trimmer. It works only on top speed which drains the battery faster and wastes string. The part is not available to replace so I either buy a new one or use it as is. It is not very durable. The chainsaw is very good too, but a retaining ring broke off. It was fixable with a very inexpensive part, but the part was on backorder and took forever to arrive.. Also, the battery charger quit and I had to replace it. Overall, excellent when new, but only lasted one season.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Real Handle LIttle Trimmer This is my second one of these trimmer edgers, several nice upgrades since the first like variable speed and feeder woks a little different, not sure if it is any better but it's ok. Handle seems a little more sturdy, the first one snapped off the first month. Took me four years to wear out the first one, Excellent for regular yard maintenance. Cuts a Clean Edge along sidewalks and drive. Does not work well on grass that has not been cut in a long time and has become thick and course. Battery life is excellent, I am able to trim and edge, then use my hedge trimmer and blower all on one battery charge. I am still on my same two batteries from 4 years ago. With the right size string the spool is easy to refill, I usually go through one complete roll in every time I do my yard. The blue string is good and works well but I recommend using the twisted yellow.

I spent several hundred dollars on this trimmer and accessory pole saw and hedger. Had to return the 40 volt battery within the first year; returned the pole saw within one week after one of the connectors broke; and now it appears that my second battery and/or the recharger has failed. This is junk. No stars whatsoever!

The line only breaks off, this requires several stops to take the head off and rewind the line. On average for my 80 x 120 ft. lot I will need to do this 4-5 times. This adds 30 - 40 mins. I have used it 4 times with 3 different kinds of lines all with the same results.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gets the job done Lightvweight with plenty of power. Battery lasy a long time. Works just as well as most of the trimmers out there. I like not having to bang it to get the string to advance. Only thing I would change is the height when it is in the edger configuration. The spool is too close to the ground.

Love it too. Then the hedge trimmer. Ditto. And finally this string trimmer. It is, like the rest of the line, easy to use, reliable, and makes the chore of caring for the yard much more enjoyable.
