Hello AMRUFF. Yes, the 40V batteries are interchangable between the Ryobi 40V lawnmowers and the 40V trimmers. Thanks so much for your inquiry!

Hi Grasscutter, on the 40v trimmer you may use .065 line or the ryobi .080 twist line.

It's a little awkward to switch back and forth, but it will go both ways, you just have to get the hang of it. I just tap the peddle to get it to release and then put the head on the ground and twist.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.5 out of 5 by 74 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Best choice for an electric battery-powered grass trimmer I ordered this as my only option for a trimmer because I have an implanted pacemaker which is affected by the electric force field produced by a gas powered trimmer where the motor is not more than two feet from the pacer. This Ryobi trimmer also produces a force field, but the motor that produces it is located at the end of the trimmer which is used to do the trimming--in other words, more than 5 feet from my pacemaker. Although a claim that it is as powerful as a gas powered trimmer is made for it, it really does not have that capability. As stated earlier, due to my implanted medical heart pacemaker, it is my only option. (P.S. Since it does not come with a shoulder strap, I had to re-use my old (before inplant echo brand) one that came with my gas-powered Echo trimmer, the use of which was ruled out by my having a pacemaker implanted. When the motor on the trimmer died, I found out that I would have to drive 125 miles and pay $60.00 to have it fixed, so I just bought a new trimmer minus charger and battery. October 18, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Good last year when new, not good now I reviewed this last year when I first started using it. It was excellent. Really, the battery is still excellent and lasts a long time. The variable speed trigger switch is no longer variable on the trimmer. It works only on top speed which drains the battery faster and wastes string. The part is not available to replace so I either buy a new one or use it as is. It is not very durable. The chainsaw is very good too, but a retaining ring broke off. It was fixable with a very inexpensive part, but the part was on backorder and took forever to arrive.. Also, the battery charger quit and I had to replace it. Overall, excellent when new, but only lasted one season. September 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Keep shopping! I spent several hundred dollars on this trimmer and accessory pole saw and hedger. Had to return the 40 volt battery within the first year; returned the pole saw within one week after one of the connectors broke; and now it appears that my second battery and/or the recharger has failed. This is junk. No stars whatsoever! October 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Real Handle LIttle Trimmer This is my second one of these trimmer edgers, several nice upgrades since the first like variable speed and feeder woks a little different, not sure if it is any better but it's ok. Handle seems a little more sturdy, the first one snapped off the first month. Took me four years to wear out the first one, Excellent for regular yard maintenance. Cuts a Clean Edge along sidewalks and drive. Does not work well on grass that has not been cut in a long time and has become thick and course. Battery life is excellent, I am able to trim and edge, then use my hedge trimmer and blower all on one battery charge. I am still on my same two batteries from 4 years ago. With the right size string the spool is easy to refill, I usually go through one complete roll in every time I do my yard. The blue string is good and works well but I recommend using the twisted yellow. October 18, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Exceeds expectations I have used a gas weed eater for decades. I have two 40V batteries expecting to need both in order to operate the Ryrobi 40V blower and weed eater. Both performed above all expectations and I did not need to change batteries. I would purchase both again and again. October 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good purchase - Great deal - Fast shipping Works great. Just as advertised. I'm not crazy about the automatic line feeder though: So far, it seems to work OK but I'd rather control that myself. Overall, I'm VERY happy with it. October 11, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Better Work, return is a problem Worked great for about 6mos. then stopped working altogether. Home Depot refused to take it back. Said "send it to the manufacture" ( their in China, of course). October 4, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by OK for small yards and light use only I picked one of these up after my old gas powered trimmer finally quit working, and it did the job OK for awhile. It has very good power, but the trade-off for that is battery life, which is short out of the box and seems to fade over time. I usually get 20-30 minutes of trimming before the battery is done, and a full charge requires 90+ minutes, more if the battery needs to cool before it can start charging. One of the biggest problems is the design of the head, which has cheap, thin plastic covers that melt and break quickly. If you're buying this, grab a few of the head covers too, you're going to need them. Pros - Good power, commensurate with a two cycle gas trimmer - Lightweight Cons - String feed is poor, esp if you're used to a bump head - Head and motor both get very hot, line regularly melts together inside head on hot days - Short battery life, and with continued use battery holds less charge - Poor head design with plastic covers that have very short lifespan July 22, 2016
