Questions & Answers

What is the expected life expectancy for this battery? How many cycles and / or years will the battery last before it should be replaced?

Asked by: SpareKey
Mine lasted around 2 years of moderate use. They seem to lack a common protective feature that prevents over-discharging the batteries. If the battery drops below a certain voltage it cannot be charged again, at least not easily and not at all with the supplied chargers. The new chargers have added a feature to condition the batteries which is good, but it still cannot help a battery that has dropped below the voltage threshold. As of 8/25/2017 warranty replacement batteries are back-ordered. For me that means a couple of months where I cannot use my trimmer or chainsaw. The 18 volt line seems a better option these days and another brand of tool better yet.

Two batteries failed in 3 months' time. What am I doing wrong? I bought a 40V Cordless String Trimmer. Charged the battery and used the trimmer a few times. When not using the trimmer, I keep the battery on the charger 24/7 in my basement at 70 degrees. 3 weeks later, the charger light says green, the battery light indicators don't light, and the battery only operates for 2 seconds before dying. So I get a 2nd one. Same deal. 5 weeks into it, with the battery on the charger for days and weeks at a time (I don't have to trim very often), the battery is dead again. Foolishly, I returned it and am now on my third unit. Is there a special way to maintain the battery?

I don't believe you are doing anything wrong. These things are just shoddy. I've had 4 to fail. Sadly, I like the equipment, but he power source is pitiful. I'm about to go all Stihl and leave the Hor Depot behind.

new 40-volt lithium-ion battery only last 15 minutes before I have to charge Using the blower. Is this normal?

Asked by: Bee
Not sure if my batteries last much longer. The blower does use the most power, compared to the mower or trimmer / edger. I can blow out my garage, front porch, entry sidewalk, driveway, street sidewalk, and even out into my cul de sac with one battery charge.

I've been through three of these in under a year and they keep dying. What can I do to make them recover? As expensive as they are, I would hate to switch because I have a number of tools that use this battery.
Asked by: Arnie
Hi Arnie, That's the $1,000 question with respect to these batteries. They are extremely poor quality batteries. Don't know that I've gone thru 3 in under 12 months. On average mine have lasted at least 9 to 12 months, so I have to replace one pretty much every 12 months. Don't really have a specific answer to your question but here are a few things to consider. After using the battery let it cool down before placing on the charger (I charge mine inside at room temperature), and do not leave the battery on the charger after fully charged. When doing your work with whichever tool try to avoid letting any moisture from perspiration, etc, get on the battery and docking cradle of the tool. Since you have gone through so many batteries in a relatively short period, you may want to consider finding an authorized Ryobi service center and let them check out the tools and charger(s) to confirm they are not the problem. Good luck.

Purchased this battery and the charger to go with Ryobi Electric lawnmower. Arrived in a timely manner. The battery arrived with a supposed full charge. I chose to charge it overnight because when I put on charger, it showed less that 1/2 charged. We have had this battery for over a month now, and it has failed to last more than 30 minutes at any given time. We always start with a full charge and can't cut more than 1/2 the front or back yard before it dies. Maybe we received a defective battery, or maybe bad product?? Have read more reviews with many people having same issue. Love the lawn mower but the experience with the battery has definitely been negative.

I bought two of these because the battery that came with my mower only lasts for a bit over half my lawn. I thought one extra would really be enough, but got two just in case. These new batteries don't even last half as long as the batter that came with the mower. Even with all three batteries now, I cannot get my entire lawn mowed. All the batteries are losing effectiveness, and I've only mowed 5 times with the mower, which has also been garbage (a part fell of after the second mow somewhere that makes it impossible to mow without a replacement part or rigging something up to keep the handle attached to the mower).

I have now replaced three batteries. The first would not charge properly. The second and third were faulty out of the box and would not even begin the charging process. I have two chargers and one other battery that charges on both so I know it's the batteries and not the charger. What I would like to do now is return the Ryobi blower and hedge trimmer and go with a different brand. These are of no use if I can't purchase a reliable batteries.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Deffective Purchased 2 of these battery/tool combos and figured I would have enough to last me a good while, unfortunately within 6 months I've had to replace it 4 times. Now Home Depot AND Ryobi have refused to replace the batteries because of their "one time replacement policy". It's rediculous and I refuse to recommended or buy anymore of their products.

Invested in a number of tools compatible with this Ryobi 40-Volt Lithium-ion Battery, thinking it'll be a savings on gas and the fuss or noise of gas engines or 100' tangle of cords. At $100 a pop for the batteries and that they lasting only 6 months before no longer taking a charge....I could have bought 20 years worth of gas for the cost of a 6 month battery. I've been using these tools for just over a year and on my third battery.

It takes about 3-5 hours to charge, maybe longer. Then put this puppy in the mower, and watch it last for maybe 30 minutes, maximum. Be ready to have a back up battery. Then be ready to have another back up battery in your backpack as a back up to the back up battery.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Ryobi 40 volt battery did not last long This battery just died on me. Used a handful of times at most. I had the string trimmer replaced already after three uses and now this battery is defective according to the charger. Really disappointed in this batter. I purchased these cordless items because I have trouble with gas powered ones and the electric ones are just a hassle. Will not purchases Ryobi products again, waste of money.

I do not recommend this battery. the 2.4 Amp version will not cut an entire yard, even a small yard. I bought the Ryobi mower and it comes with the 5.0 Amp battery, which was fine for exactly 3 months, and then it wouldn't finish cutting my back yard. I called Ryobi and they know their batteries are bad. Warranty folks wanted to replace my battery, but this product is so bad, they had none to ship, and will have none until December. So, I went to Home Depot and bought this. Well, the 2.4 Amp version was worse than my defective 5.0 Amp battery, as the brand-new battery couldn't even finish my front yard. I see a class-action on its way to Ryobi soon.
