Customer Questions & Answers

What is the expected life expectancy for this battery? How many cycles and / or years will the battery last before it should be replaced?

Asked by: SpareKey
It is VERY mixed. One battery lasted only about 6 weeks. I'd say a dozen charge cycles. Another lasted four months and one still works after a year. I use these with a blower and a 16 inch mower. Of the three chargers I own, after a year two still work, one is dead. If you do a lot of yard work expect spend $100 every three months or so on replacement batteries. The Ryobi tools are very good, good price and power but these batteries and the chargers are the weak link. I can't recommend them except for light occasional use

new 40-volt lithium-ion battery only last 15 minutes before I have to charge Using the blower. Is this normal?

Asked by: Bee
This is correct, very high speed motor, very high demand for power. In other 40 volt tools run-time is much longer.

The first battery and charger failed to charge right out of the box. Returned the battery while still in warranty and it worked twice before the lights started flashing red/green. Went back to Home Depot and spent $100 on a battery. ..wouldn't charge. Bought a charger at home depot online ($55) but both the new and old battery failed to charge. Returned both to Home Depot today and will look for another brand this spring. This product is CR@P!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad battery I bought the 40 volt leaf blower in June and the battery wouldn't charge after minimal use and only 3 1/2 months. Tried exchanging battery at home depot but customer service told me that the store warranty is only valid for 3 months from date of purchase. And was also informed that ryobi requires purchase receipt and barcode from original packaging. Needless to say I did'nt hold onto empty packaging so i had to purchase a new battery for $99

I have used Ryobi 40v batteries for years and have been extremely pleased with their performance, both in power and length of operation. However, this particular battery was a replacement and would not take a charge. In fact, two of last three 40v batteries would not take a charge. Returned battery to local Home Depot for full refund with no hassle.

This battery is the same kind that was on my Leaf blower when I purchased it. It does not last any time at all and it takes forever to charge (hours) and sometimes is very hard to connect to the charger & blower. I can put it on the charger & the green light comes on saying it's charging and then it just goes out & quits. I have to take it off the charger and put it back on and again make sure the green light stays on. Very frustrating. They need to replace it for me since it cost so much!!

I had to replace them 3 times in one summer and now the newest battery is showing a fault on it. I put them on a timer so they don't sit to long but they continue to fail. Talk to customer service and they tell you , you must be doing something wrong. I have had one battery that has stayed with me the others are all duds. buyer beware , the tools are fine and work good , the batteries are horrible.

I sank $700 into a weed trimmer, brush cutter, cultivator, pole saw, and spare regular strength battery. The charger showed defective battery at first, then I unplugged and replugged a couple of times and the charger charged the battery that had come with the weed-eater. But the spare battery was showing defective and would not charge. So I took it back to the store and got another spare battery. Same deal - it's showing defective. So now I'm going to take the whole weed-eater assembly back to the store and exchange it so I can try a new charger as well as a new battery. I've been a HUGE fan of the 18v power tools for a couple of years but I am bitterly disappointed with this 40 volt system. My property is remotely rural and 10 miles away from the nearest Home Depot (150 miles away from my home). Every time I go out there, I can't use any of the equipment I got. So far, it's been useless.

Battery has been recharged 3-5 times and now the charger says it is defective and will not charge it. Have been using the 18-volt batteries for years and still have some over ten years old that work. I know how to use and treat batteries. Check other online sources. Reviews for this battery are terrible. Spend $150 for a tool and the $99 battery will not hold up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from PLENTY OF POWER For over a year I have had 3 tools that use this battery: a chain saw, a string trimmer, and a tiller. I bought this third battery so I could complete any job I tried as long as there is a power source for the chargers (I have an inverter for my truck batteries for where electric outlets are not handy). There is a real advantage to using batteries instead of cords that seem to get in the way. The battery powered chainsaw is slightly more powerful than my plug-in chainsaw. The tiller is on a par with my Mantis tiller. Neither involve storing and filling with gasoline and the at-least-annual repairs to the small gas engines. The string trimmer actually out-performs the gas versions. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
