Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by DB1943 The tools are great, but a battery has gone bad after just a couple uses.
i got a 40 volt hedge trimmer, blower, and weed whacker. They are noticably stronger than my 18 volt versions, I was really disappointed to find that one of the batteries would not take a charge after only a couple of uses. I googled the warranty and called the number that came up and they are sending me a new battery but I have a half dozen of the 18 volt for a couple of years and never a problem with any of them. By the way, if you are buying a 40 volt battery separately, the 5 amp for $139 seems like a lot better deal that the 2.4 for $99. I think they just use the newer double density cells on the 5 amp, it is no bigger and seems no heavier.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Disappointed Failed to charge after 8 uses
The Ryobi trimmer came with this battery. The charger indicates after only eight uses (and subsequent charging), that it is defective and will not charge. In fact, the battery had about a 1/4 of a charge when I put it on last and has now drained to nearly no charge. It can only be mounted in the charger one way and was properly mounted. Several attempts, same result. Don't buy Ryobi. It's a shame, because the trimmer is fairly powerful and lightweight. This battery though, worthless. The Home Depot reviews for the trimmer were positive, which influenced my choice. They indicated the 40v would run for an acceptable amount of time, but the 18v were too short.

I bought this battery as a back-up for the 40 volt pole saw, weed whacker and cordless leaf blower, all of which I purchased this year. I received the battery 2 weeks after placing the order, then attempted to charge it on the Ryobi 40 volt charger. Battery was defective and would not charge. Returned it the next day and purchased another one which I ended up returning 2 weeks later after it quit working. I purchased a third one...we'll see how long this one lasts! I really regret purchasing any of Ryobi's 40 volt tools due to the short life of the batteries.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by MaryTurner love the trimmer and blower, but 2nd battery to die within 4 charges
I love the tools... The trimmer is awesome, the blower is awesome - however I have gone through 2 batteries that dont seem to last more than 4 charges. I dont understand what I could be doing wrong. I will begin to use the tool and it will randomly stop working. I click the battery tester and it shows full charge. I try again and sometimes the tool will begin to work and allow me to finish the job. However this is the identical symptom right before the battery can no longer be charged. 2 batteries dead within 60 days of purchase. I will exchange it again at home depot but it really hurts my feelings. I LOVE THE TRIMMER, but HATE THE BATTERIES...

I purchased both the 40 volt Ryobi string trimmer and the 40 volt Ryobi blower from Home Depot. Both batteries quit at the 4 month point. I googled the problem, and sure enough it is an extremely common problem. Home Depot won't stand behind this defective low quality Chinese product, telling me I should have spent extra on a warranty.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Grandpaof13 Beware this Battery-Expensive for Less than Five Charging cycles
Purchased two of these batteries for use with a Trimmer, RY40002. Neither battery made it to five cycles without failing (charger gives alternating Red and Green flashes).
$99 is too much for a battery that can't make it through 5 cycles. Read a review that said the batteries need to be stowed indoors, but our garage hasn't gone below 50 degrees, or above 90. Any product designed for outdoor use should be able to handle that temperature range.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tom6721 Great Battery!
This battery has a long life and is not so heavy that it makes using the trimmer/edger/blower/hedge trimmer un comfortable. I would recommend this battery to anyone that has a Ryobi tool that it fits.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by limy disappoined in life of battery before recharge is needed
purchased this as a back up as original battery charge only lasts for 20 minutes of weed eating then when i got it home it was defective and had to return to the store for an exchange hope this isn;t a sign that this battery will provide even less up time than my original version these tools are a great idea but battery charge/use time needs improvement
