Answer:
Yes, under normal use you can leave it plugged in to the "smart" charger without any worries. However, if you are not going to use it for several months, or it is in extreme temperatures, some cautions apply. The manual explains it all.

Supposedly, but I do not. There is a lot of information on line regarding care and use of lithium ion batteries. It is nice that the charger can be mounted on the wall.

I also recommend giving this string trimmer a try before you purchase the edger attachment with the blade. I have no trouble cutting through thick turf on the edge of our lawn, and if the string hits our stone walkway or concrete, no problem.

The matching 20" 30 volt mower and blower are also great tools. If you decide to purchase them, buy the version with the battery and charger included. It is helpful to have multiple batteries, and more convenient to be ability to recharge them at one time.

I hope this is helpful,

In my experience, it says it does. However, it really doesn't. I also have found out (the hard way) that any attachment will drain the battery in no time. I would think twice about this product.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better than expected! This trimmer has turned out to be an excellent purchase. I really didn't expect a battery powered unit to be as powerful as this one has been. I've also used my gas powered attachments with it (including a brush cutter) and it has performed well. When I first started using it the battery only lasted about an hour, but after several uses it now lasts for about 90 min running at full power constantly. I live in a rural area with a very large yard, so I have lots of brush to clear along with my normal trimming around the house. The only thing that would make it better would be for it to come with 2 batteries. I would definitely buy another one. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just bought it! Only took a minute to assemble the string trimmer & the battery charged in a couple of hours. Charger worked great. Plugged the battery in and I must say it works as advertised. Works as well as the old 2 cycle gas Ryobi it replaced, but w/o the gas mixing and sometimes fussy choke starts! I also purchased the edger to replace the 5 year old one I had before. Used it today and it work incredible. Would highly recommend this product. NO gas. I was skeptical at first, but now I’m sold. Store said it could run up to 90 minutes and I believe it. Buy it! You’ll love it! Also my wife likes the fact I don’t smell like gas & its quiet! August 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi trimmer 40v I have been very happy with the unit. Modifications I made include adding a $20 external string head since I did not care for the original trimmer head. It cuts better with the new open string head. I also purchased an extra battery, which was reasonably priced. I just purchased the trimmer add-on and found it to work well. I am 5' 7" tall and had to develop a new technique for trimming flat across the top of the hedge due to the unit's weight, length, and balance. Overall, I am happy with the trimmer. It is just different than the smaller corded trimmer I have used previously. August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simply the best string trimmer I have ever owned This trimmer is the best I have ever owned. It is well balanced. I did all my trimming and my arms did not feel tired. It has power. I have owned gas and electric trimmers and this has as much power as any of them. It is quiet. Unlike my old gas trimmer I do not have to wear ear plugs or worry if I ma starting to trim too early in the morning. I can trim and my neighbors sleep. The battery lasts for quite a long time. My old battery trimmer would need to be charged halfway though the trimming. This trimmer did it all in one charge. I could not be happier with it. For the money it is the best trimmer I have ever owned. August 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Consider the total cost of buying and using this tool. Trimmer string head does not work that well. The tool doesn't always feed out the string when you tap the head. I find it difficult to load the string. The Ryobi bladed trimmer head accessory does not work with this trimmer. Do not believe what is printed on the bladed trimmer packaging. The bladed trimmer does not fit on this cordless trimmer attachment. Pre-loaded string spools cost $20 for three spools. I don't know how many spools that you would use during a season, but assuming 3 spools over a five-year life of the tool, that's an additional $120 to use this tools over it's lifespan plus your time driving to a store to purchase replacement spools. I'd like to know if there is another bladed trimmer accessory that fits this tool. August 20, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Loved it, when it worked I thought this trimmer was awesome, the first few times I used it. I could trim, edge, and blow my yard on one charge. Then the battery stopped taking a charge. I returned for a second 40V. Used it for almost a month this time, before the same thing started to happen. Will have to take this one back now, and will not get a 3rd. I will go back to gas. Also worth mentioning, as others had the same issue, that the tightening screw used to secure the tool attachment clamp also stripped out. It is such a shame, as I really wanted it to work. August 15, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice product, Battery Could last longer I find this to have the power needed. It took a bit to get familiar with it as there is a hesitation between pulling the trigger and the motor revving. For most applications this isn't a issue. I wish the battery life was longer. If you have a small yard it shouldn't be an issue. I believe the instructions state that it take about 1/2 an hour to charge however I noticed it takes significantly longer. I really wish I bought the gas version as this never makes it through my entire yard without dyeing and spare batteries are expensive. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by EASY and EFFICIENT !! I am a petite woman and I am NOT good with weed trimmers. I have been through probably 5 or 6 in the past 5 years. I've tried electric(cord tangles or is too short) and I've tried gas (too difficult to start/ keep running and I can't stand the fumes). All end up in the shed never to be used again. I was visiting my daughter when her electric one quit. Her neighbor offered her the use of his 40 volt battery powered weed eater. It was amazing!! I could use it effortlessly and without any issues popping up. Came home, ordered my own and our five acres is now looking like we have goats!! August 2, 2016
