Answer:
Sounds like a electrical short. You have a 1 year return to Home Depot if you used a Home Depot credit card to make the purchase. If not Roybi warranties the trimmer for 5years. Either way I would first take it back to Home Depot they will take care of you.

Answer:
Yes, under normal use you can leave it plugged in to the "smart" charger without any worries. However, if you are not going to use it for several months, or it is in extreme temperatures, some cautions apply. The manual explains it all.

Supposedly, but I do not. There is a lot of information on line regarding care and use of lithium ion batteries. It is nice that the charger can be mounted on the wall.

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 766 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Lasted 2 months, neither Home Depot or Ryobi would replace. I bought one of these because I figured it would be a better buy and the reviews were great. I also picked the cultivator attachment because my wife has a medium sized vegetable garden. I quickly learned that using this product for anything other than light duty work will result in a broken power head. Which makes me wonder why they make a cultivator attachment for it in the first place. When using some of their other attachments, vibrations will eventually crack the handle in half. Ryobi claims that this is not a flaw in their product and will not replace it. Home Depot will not replace it either. If you like to collect broken tools, this is for you September 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Better than expected! This trimmer has turned out to be an excellent purchase. I really didn't expect a battery powered unit to be as powerful as this one has been. I've also used my gas powered attachments with it (including a brush cutter) and it has performed well. When I first started using it the battery only lasted about an hour, but after several uses it now lasts for about 90 min running at full power constantly. I live in a rural area with a very large yard, so I have lots of brush to clear along with my normal trimming around the house. The only thing that would make it better would be for it to come with 2 batteries. I would definitely buy another one. August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by TWO DEFECTIVE UNITS Bought 2 units and an edger attachment. One unit was to be used as a backup. I used the first unit twice then it stopped working so I got my second unit out of the box and discovered it did not work at all. I tried swapping batteries and charging them overnight but could not get either unit to work. Both trimmers were only 3 months old. The first trimmer worked fine when it was working but it didn't last long. The only thing that I didn't like (other than the quality) is the trimmers seem to have a one or two second delay before they start. No problems returning them to HD. September 2, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Just bought it! Only took a minute to assemble the string trimmer & the battery charged in a couple of hours. Charger worked great. Plugged the battery in and I must say it works as advertised. Works as well as the old 2 cycle gas Ryobi it replaced, but w/o the gas mixing and sometimes fussy choke starts! I also purchased the edger to replace the 5 year old one I had before. Used it today and it work incredible. Would highly recommend this product. NO gas. I was skeptical at first, but now I’m sold. Store said it could run up to 90 minutes and I believe it. Buy it! You’ll love it! Also my wife likes the fact I don’t smell like gas & its quiet! August 7, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Dissapointing I bought trimmer/edger and extra battery at local home depot. At first was very satisfied as it was easy to start, quieter that gas powered models, and similar power. However after only one month of use both batteries would not charge and chargers would blink with red and green "error" message. I have gone online and found this is a common problem. I had already thrown away box/receipt. My local home depot in Oviedo FL took it back no questions asked and gave me store credit. Apparently a lot of these are coming back. The staff was friendly and professional. So I would say, terrible product from Ryobi, and excellent customer service from Home Depot. Will buy new equipment from Home Depot but stay away from Ryobi. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Consider the total cost of buying and using this tool. Trimmer string head does not work that well. The tool doesn't always feed out the string when you tap the head. I find it difficult to load the string. The Ryobi bladed trimmer head accessory does not work with this trimmer. Do not believe what is printed on the bladed trimmer packaging. The bladed trimmer does not fit on this cordless trimmer attachment. Pre-loaded string spools cost $20 for three spools. I don't know how many spools that you would use during a season, but assuming 3 spools over a five-year life of the tool, that's an additional $120 to use this tools over it's lifespan plus your time driving to a store to purchase replacement spools. I'd like to know if there is another bladed trimmer accessory that fits this tool. August 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Simply the best string trimmer I have ever owned This trimmer is the best I have ever owned. It is well balanced. I did all my trimming and my arms did not feel tired. It has power. I have owned gas and electric trimmers and this has as much power as any of them. It is quiet. Unlike my old gas trimmer I do not have to wear ear plugs or worry if I ma starting to trim too early in the morning. I can trim and my neighbors sleep. The battery lasts for quite a long time. My old battery trimmer would need to be charged halfway though the trimming. This trimmer did it all in one charge. I could not be happier with it. For the money it is the best trimmer I have ever owned. August 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi trimmer 40v I have been very happy with the unit. Modifications I made include adding a $20 external string head since I did not care for the original trimmer head. It cuts better with the new open string head. I also purchased an extra battery, which was reasonably priced. I just purchased the trimmer add-on and found it to work well. I am 5' 7" tall and had to develop a new technique for trimming flat across the top of the hedge due to the unit's weight, length, and balance. Overall, I am happy with the trimmer. It is just different than the smaller corded trimmer I have used previously. August 23, 2016
