Rated 2 out of 5 by Terrible trimmer head The trimmer head is the most critical component of an edger, and the trimmer head here is terrible. You can not go more than a few feet before the line is heavily worn, and you have to flip the edger over and manually advance the line. Often the line just breaks. It's a very annoying and time consuming process. The trimmer head is not replaceable. Usually you can put a third party head of your choice on an edger. It's not possible here because there is no bolt to the spindle. This would otherwise be an awesome tool. The battery life is great, the motor is powerful, the edger is well balanced and feels right. But if an edger can not edge, it's a poor product. If you buy this you will be disappointed. February 6, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Great tool with some design issues. This product does work well, but it is cumbersome and heavy. I had issues with the guard as it is hard to see what you are doing. Plus the automatic string feed is difficult to use conservatively. I have cut off string every time I pull the trigger. I run it by starting and then keeping the trigger pulled until I am done to save on the string. My wife does not use this tool as it is too awkward and heavy for her. The ability to flip to edger is a nice idea, but I never use it as I just edge with the trimmer. The attractiveness for me was the price. The online offer made it worthwhile to purchase plus the battery compatibility, but this tool would not be my ideal choice for a trimmer. September 30, 2014
Rated 5 out of 5 by Best unit ever. I have been using this unit since last fall, it is now may 2014 andI love everything about the trimmer edger -, it works great with the foot pedal to go from trimmer to edger, my only problem is with the spools, they tend to jam and I must reset the line by hand, I hope that they resolve this issue - I purchase my spools at Home Depot and next time I go there I will complaine about this issue. I had a gas unit and I know that this unit is better and not noiset , the speed control is great - no matter the size of the grass or weeds it will cut them down - PS fix the spools and I will be a happy person. Rated 2 out of 5 by Much too expensive to use I have the Ryobi 40V hedgetrimmer, chainsaw, blower and just bought the string trimmer. I began to trim the grass along my 35 foot front yard sidewalk and ran out of string before I finished. I contacted Ryobi suggesting they should consider a larger sample spool and was tersely told the trimmer came with a full spool and 'Ryobi didn't consider it skimping'. These spools aren't refillable so now know I would have to buy 2 spools of string just to trim the walk. Can't imagine how many spools I'd have to buy for the driveway. I'm returning this product because I think it would turn into a money pit to keep it filled with string. In terms of the trimming, it works about how you'd expect a battery-powered trimmer to work. I didn't buy it to replace my Stihl gas-powered trimmer, but just to do easy trimming. Were it not so expensive to operate, I'd probably keep it. September 16, 2014
Rated 2 out of 5 by Underwhelmed I really wanted to like this string trimmer, but all important features failed to deliver to expectations. The battery didn't last for the entire job, which is a simple, quarter-acre perimeter and a few gardens. 15-20 mins with my old, gas-powered trimmer. The power seemed adequate, but paired with the single-line dental floss that came with it, the line snapped frequently. This happens more often when you use the edging 'mode' as the string may contact the curb or sidewalk occasionally. This mode is rendered useless. So, using the 'no-bump' line advance system becomes an important feature, but alas, a fourth disappointment... the line advances an inch at a time, according to the manual. Just let the head stop spinning, then squeeze the throttle briefly, then release. It worked about half the time, and the view from my neighbors was like this: - "Dang it" (me) - Pause 3 secs (me) - Whizz (Ryobi) - Pause (me) - Whizz/pause/whizz/pause/whizz/pause/whizzz/pause ... - Whizzzzzzzzzzz (3-4steps) - "Dang it" (me) I ended up returning it without any issues.
