Answer:
The 40 Volt power head that you are referring to (RY40220) has it's own built in drive motor. So no, this edger attachment also has a motor, and only works with a Power head that supplies battery power to the edger attachment, not a motor drive coupling...You would need the 24, or 40 Volt only power head that just supplies electrical power...

Answer:
Kobalt is Lowes branded product, and I would doubt that it is compatible with a Ryobi branded product. Most accessories made for one vendor's product line are only useable by the product line....

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 136 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Problem that was rectified by Ryobi Consumer Service We had a problem when we disconnected the handle to attach to our pole saw. The electrical plug component pulled out of the trimmer edger making it impossible to use. Ryobi notified us when they received a bad review posted on this Home Depot website. Ryobi replaced our unit with a new one at no charge and we couldn't be happier. We love 1the fact that Ryobie stands 100% behind their products. We have a pole saw, chain saw, blower, 2 trimmer/edgers and a pressure washer and have been using their products for about two years. This was the first time we had any problems. GREAT PRODUCT as they want their customers happy with their purchase. October 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for light duty use Good for light duty. Don't think you are getting a gas powered edger. Also, you should know that you need to have the weed eater before you buy this. It is only the edger end that attaches to the top half (Handle with battery) of the weed eater. It uses the battery quite fast, so if you have a long driveway, like I do, it will take several charges to get it all done. October 11, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by edger that i can't use I purchased this edger attachment but am unable to use it. Contacted customer service and no response. Very unhappy October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is great! Finally, I don't go through tons of string breaking it while edging. This is a must have! October 11, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic Edger Option I was using my string trimmer to edge and would usually eat through an entire replacement spool every other time. This does a better job, faster, and easier. Cannot recommend this enough if you want to use your Ryobi to edge September 13, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bad internal design I've had 2 of these and they tend to burn out when edging in our Houston clay and St. Augustine grass. The working design is great and it's a wonderful edger to use while it works, but the issue seems to be twofold: First, the metal motor parts are attached to the frame with plastic mounting locations, so when high torque situations happen (you hit the curb or driveway concrete), it eventually vibrates those mounts until they fail. Second, either in concert with the previous problem or independently, it tends to eventually run hot and intermittently shut down. I just had my second one do the same thing after a warranty mounting bracket repair just a month ago. When I finished, it was smoking. All of these devices have failed, the latest twice after only 7 months use. I'll be sending it back to the warranty guys again next week... If they can fix the reliability, I'd highly recommend this product, since it's great to work with and the easiest edger I've ever had. Until then, it will likely fail within a year, at least in our environment. August 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Lasted 2 Seasons / Now Nearly Junk Cranky tool. I have tried to tighten the head but the screws just spin and it's all loose now. Spools (I wind my own) have to be done just so or the cord jams up inside. Edging is difficult to see where to place trimmer. Not happy. So far this summer I've spent more time tinkering with the thing than getting yard work done. Would not buy again. September 3, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Bogus Wrong product is not compatible with the string trimmer I purchased. August 9, 2016
