I'm very confused about what works with what. Some of the answers say to use Expand-It attachments that gas power heads use, other attachments are for 40V. I have the RY40000 power head that is 40V. Will this hedge trimmer work with it?

This attachment will work with the 40210B and 40201A. Look for the Trimmer head that has the Grey coupler at the end of the shaft.

You cannot use the Ryobi Model # RY40225 Expand-It 40-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Attachment Capable Power Head with this attachment. The Expand-it line has a different type of connection and the motor is in the power head not in the attachment. The power head you need is not sold in store and you will have to buy online. Hope this helps avoid the headache I have been going though

Some power heads are just battery and controller, while the RY40002 which powers the above is battery, controller and motor. It would not be so hard to explain this rather than having meaningless names for different series of attachments. Read Less

1. This one is the power head only - $149 - I have not figured out the difference between this one (RY40225) and the one that comes with the two options below (RY40210). But I can tell you that is the one that I have and it works great there should be no difference in the power.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-Expand-It-40-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-Attachment-Capable-Power-Head-RY40225/204839366
2. This option Include the power head, battery, charger, and string trimmer for $119. This is the one I have. The string trimmer works great. So for $30 less you get both.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-40-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-String-Trimmer-Edger-RY40210A/203763425
3. Third Option includes the string trimmer and blower-$229

4. Best Option, here is what I did.
Bought the String Trimmer (option 2 above) $119
Bought the blower separate $139 see below (it has charger and battery) so now I have 2 batteries and 2 chargers. I also have the pole trimmer, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and 20" lawn mower. So having two chargers and 2 batteries is ideal. When I bought the other items, I bought them without the battery and charger.

Hi Chuck-
The reach of the tool will depend on the reach of the user. The hedge trimmer itself is about 39 1/2" in length. When added to the power head the total length of the tools will be about 6'1". So the tool length plus the average reach of a person (about 3'), the tool can reach about 9'. Remember to always hold hedge trimmer with both hands when operating. Use a firm grip on the handles. Answer:
When attached to the String Trimmer Head it can reach 10 ft. if the cutting shaft is straight up and down. The cutting shaft can pivot. So if you have it pivoted to say 45 Degree then it's 8-9 ft. i.e. I have a hedge that is about 9 ft high. I can pivot the cutting blade so it is flat on top and I can reach the top of the hedge fairly easy.

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 68 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for hard to reach places I purchased the 40-Volt Cordless Hedge Trimmer Attachment in order to trim hedges that are too tall for use of the handheld hedger. This attachment requires the purchase of the Ryobi string trimmer in order for it to work. The Hedge Trimmer Attachment indeed accomplishes the mission of trimming hedges that are tall and awkward to reach. The attachment assembles to the Ryobi string trimmer with ease and can extend or collapse to your desired length usage. The cutting blade heads adjusts to 45, 90, and 180* and is ideal for trimming hard to reach areas. Pro’s : Powerful and sharp blades, ease of connecting to base String trimmer, extendable/adjustable pole, and great 40v lithium battery life. Cons: very heavy when extending the pole, requires purchase of the Ryobi Sting Trimmer base unit, the blade, although adequate, could be longer. May 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Expand-it 40V hedge trimmer attachment After much searching I finally identified this Ryobi articulating head hedge trimmer attachment (RYAHT99) as compatible with my Expand-It attachment capable power head (RY40225). There are two very similar power heads with different attachment connectors, but the info on the Home Depot website did not clearly identify matching pieces. That said, now that I have used the unit, I'm satisfied with its quality and utility. At $100, it's expensive compared to other Ryobi attachments and to competing hedge trimmer attachments. The assembled trimmer is on the heavy side for lengthy use, but the 3/4" cut capacity handles large branches easily. On balance, it's another fine Ryobi yard implement. September 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product Great tool for the purpose intended. Extends my already great hedge trimmer so I can top the high hedge and other bushes and actually trees! No ladder needed anymore--can do it all from the ground. It's a little heavy when at full extension, but I can live with that. The jobs listed above now take about 1/2 the time they used to, and the pair of 40 volt batteries I have means I no longer have to mess with the messy gasoline trimmer, edger, blower, etc. Love it! August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great product for the money the unit worked exactly as advertised. A welcome addition to all my other Ryobi units. it is , however very heavy when all extensions are put together, but worth it because I didn't need any ladders to cut the limbs. August 9, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Not for 40-Volt X Trimmers (models RY40220) sold in store The trimmer for attachment is discontinued and no longer carried by Home Depot. You can only find it online, refurbished and at a higher price than the RY40220. Home Depot should stop selling this unit. Its confusing to the consumer. August 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 24 volt cordless hedge trimmer I purchased this attachment so I could trim the hedges without cords. It function well but is a little cumbersome in tight places. Overall it works well and I will learn to use this thing comfortably. September 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very Heavy, But Worth The Workout This is an excellent tool to have for any home gardener who wants to prune or trim their bushes and hedges with a professional look. If you are a person who trims their own yard and can stay on top of things (trimming as means of maintenance and not once a year) then this is for you! If you are a professional gardener, you can skip this product. It is too heavy (about 15lbs or more) and will give your arms and shoulders a workout. Gas poles are heavy too, but not this heavy! For me, I was able to trim/shave down two giant bushes in my front yard. By using this tool alone, it paid for itself after one use. I loved it Granted, I had to take my time since after 20 minutes or so my arms wanted to give out. But if you hold it properly, and every one is different, you can easily trim everything you need and not feel tired and worn out. I also trimmed two sets of hedges as well. This was a great tool to have instead of the hand trimmers. I was able to use the pole as a leveler on it. You will get a nice even cut horizontally. The blades are good for up to about an inch worth of thickness. What I cut was far less than that and went through the greenery like a hot knife through butter. It was just like any of the hand held trimmers. You may think when you first turn it on, it will not have the juice to cut anything, but it does! The low hum of the tool is deceiving. It packs a pretty good cutting punch. For the pole itself, it comes in two parts -- the trimmer and the extension pole. You hook these up together to get about 7 extra feet. This works with the 24v and 40v power poles. I have the 24v kind and it easily had enough power for what I needed. And the battery was minimally taxed. I used it a good 30 minutes straight and the battery power still had a 30% left. I also like that the middle extension pole had a foam grip to it. It is fairly large in diameter so it fits nicely in your hand. And the parts like other Ryobi products are all align the dots, stick it in, and then screw down for secure positioning. For those of you who have this series of products you know what I am talking about. Easy stuff! Other than the weight of the tool after extended use, this is a fantastic product. I have wanted one of these for years and so happy I finally got one. I can prune just about any tree, hedge or bush in the yard -- and NO cord! September 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Another great ryobi product I really needed a pole hedge trimmer and this is great! I also purchased the pole saw and am able to use the extensions from that for added reach! This is part of the ryobi connextion system that I believe they have stopped producing, however, all the attachments are still available anywhere they sell ryobi! July 26, 2016
