I'm very confused about what works with what. Some of the answers say to use Expand-It attachments that gas power heads use, other attachments are for 40V. I have the RY40000 power head that is 40V. Will this hedge trimmer work with it?

The different being the connection joint between the power head and the interchangeable tool. This one has a grey screw-on coupler. You line up the arrows on the 2 pieces, push them together and then the grey cover screws down over the connection. The RY40002 has knob on the end of the power head. Wen you insert the tool into the power head you tighten the knob which tightens a clamp over the shaft. If you have the RY40000 with the grey screw-down collar, you're good to go Read Less

Some power heads are just battery and controller, while the RY40002 which powers the above is battery, controller and motor. It would not be so hard to explain this rather than having meaningless names for different series of attachments. Read Less

1. This one is the power head only - $149 - I have not figured out the difference between this one (RY40225) and the one that comes with the two options below (RY40210). But I can tell you that is the one that I have and it works great there should be no difference in the power.

2. This option Include the power head, battery, charger, and string trimmer for $119. This is the one I have. The string trimmer works great. So for $30 less you get both.
http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-40-Volt-Lithium-Ion-Cordless-String-Trimmer-Edger-RY40210A/203763425
3. Third Option includes the string trimmer and blower-$229

4. Best Option, here is what I did.
Bought the String Trimmer (option 2 above) $119
Bought the blower separate $139 see below (it has charger and battery) so now I have 2 batteries and 2 chargers. I also have the pole trimmer, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and 20" lawn mower. So having two chargers and 2 batteries is ideal. When I bought the other items, I bought them without the battery and charger.

The 18 volt trimmer is $99, the 40 volt is $119 RY40210A

I would highly recommend getting the 40 volt string trimmer, then you have the battery and the charger and can add the hedge trimmer.

It of course needs the RY40225 power head. When attached to that, you can reach i.e. branches up to 12-13 feet high, that is with the cutting blade pointed straight up and down. It has a rotating head so I angle the blade section and can trim a 10' hedge flat across the top. CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 54 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for hard to reach places I purchased the 40-Volt Cordless Hedge Trimmer Attachment in order to trim hedges that are too tall for use of the handheld hedger. This attachment requires the purchase of the Ryobi string trimmer in order for it to work. The Hedge Trimmer Attachment indeed accomplishes the mission of trimming hedges that are tall and awkward to reach. The attachment assembles to the Ryobi string trimmer with ease and can extend or collapse to your desired length usage. The cutting blade heads adjusts to 45, 90, and 180* and is ideal for trimming hard to reach areas. Pro’s : Powerful and sharp blades, ease of connecting to base String trimmer, extendable/adjustable pole, and great 40v lithium battery life. Cons: very heavy when extending the pole, requires purchase of the Ryobi Sting Trimmer base unit, the blade, although adequate, could be longer. May 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good hedge trimmer For anyone who has a tall shrub/hedge which requires more height than a step ladder to trim the top, this attachment works great. It is not heavy on top; which means that reaching the extra distance is not too heavy to manage. I have a regular electric hedge trimmer that works fine for shrubs at my height. But I have others which can exceed 12 feet tall. Reaching with any other trimmer is unsafe. This unit does the job. And I can adjust the cutter to 90 degrees so I can go straight up and cut the top outgrowth easily. So glad I purchased this. FYI, you need to purchase the battery operated trimmer separately, which I already had. May 3, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by One of my top 5 Yard Tool Purchases Never used a gasoline hedge trimmer but this sure beat dragging a corded model around. I use the 40v battery and it is very powerful. No problem taking out an older hedge with half to one inch "limbs". The extensions are great! Used it for 30 minutes straight and the battery was still going strong. Very happy with this tool. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by cut weeds very well I have about 10,000 sf yard full of weeds after couple of rains. I was really concerned so I decided give this tool a shot. It cuts of low or tall weeds very well and very fast. You have to have some muscle though to be able to hold it with front trimmer levelling and sweeping low as weed root level. take breaks after few mins. it does sore my bicyps. it cuts weeds with ease and quick. it touches and weeds falls down. very efficient to mow down large yard. much better than I thought. now whole yard weeds mowed down under 30 mins. surprised me and my wife! would recommend. good tool. April 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Beats using a set of hedge clippers I bought this because I already had the 40v string trimmer. I thought it would kill the battery as much trimming as I did, but the battery held up well and I even cut some limbs later with the pole saw attachment. Love that I am able to reach the top of my holly bushes. It's a little un balanced but it's really long for getting those high places. I suggest working on the guns if you're having trouble managing the trimmer. May 17, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by good but unfortunately discontinued product I bought this implement in order hedge to my topiary. Articulating head is useful. Unfortunately driver is now a discontinued product. April 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Exactly what I needed The product is exactly what I needed to trim very tall shrubs around the house. I knocked down the ease of use because when in the full extension config, it is a little heavy and you have to pay attention to keep it from getting away from you. The design is that the power for the unit is in the battery at the back, but the actual motor is in the head. This makes it very balanced to just pick it up, but when you use it you know it's a little "front heavy" if that makes any sense at all. Just hold on and pay attention and it has plenty of power in the 40 volt model to trim even mature shrubs. I would buy again and recommend it as long as you can handle heavier power equipment February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A superior battery-operated attachment tool for yardwork. I believe this to be an exceptional product. There are two length options which are very handy for differing landscape plantings. Plenty of power -- didn't get hung-up in my ornamental grasses. Not noisy... for a hedge-trimmer. I could not rate it excellent for "Quality", since I've only had it for a month. I'll let you know in a year or so. I could not rate it excellent for "Ease if Use", since I don't have someone else doing the work for me. Only downside -- the blade guard really doesn't fit well. To keep it clean while storing, put a long sweatsock over it instead. Afterall, necessity is the mother of invention. April 29, 2014
