Answer:
It's a lead acid battery, outdated technology should be a cadmium based rechargeable. Scrap it and get a gasoline mower or electric cord mower which will last many, many years longer for less than half the price.

After one year?

Well, I can't find my receipt, so I don't know how old this is - although it is more than 1 year. However, I too have the defective charger and now battery, and called Ryobi service. Basically I was told I was welcome to buy a new one since it was past the one year.

When a company like this has a known defect in one of the products, and still refuses to make it right on a technicality. . That is something I very much dislike - and will prevent me from ever spending any more $ with this company, and I will tell everyone I know!

1 year on a seasonal item, and knowing the part was defective is very bad business.

Does anybody know if there is something "other" than the 4050 service department to call? Is there some code to tell the person? I called twice and was met with eye rolling sounds each time.

The guy on the PHONE said the new charger would not work with the old battery, but the guy in email said that ALL Ryobi chargers are compatible with ALL Ryobi batteries. Unfortunately the new charger does not charge the battery - apparently the battery is dead. (I was told that "just happens." So I have to get a new battery. It is available online only at Home Depot for $129 with FREE shipping to your home. At the parts distribution place that Ryobi gave me, it costs $137.16 and $17.45 for shipping. GOOD LUCK! Read Less

Answer:
Hi Warren! When the self-propelled feature is disengaged the mower will then operate as a regular lawn mower. This will allow you to push the mower at the speed desired. Hope this helps.

Customer Reviews

Rated 2.9 out of 5 by 161 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A lawn mower renewal Cordless lawn mower first battery lasted 5 years of regular sometimes hard use, but eventually started getting short in power. Needed a new one, and it arrived in time to do it like before, the whole lot on one charge with some to spare. September 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by A functional unit This is the second battery to fail in 5 years. The first was replaced free of charge by Ryobi, so I can't complain. This one has lasted three seasons, probably not unreasonable. As a senior citizen, I find it pretty heavy (thank the good Lord for grandsons!). And don't leave the charger out in the weather: it is not moisture-proof! September 6, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Absolutely the worst buy This is the absolute worst product on the market, and Ryobi will not acknowledge there is a problem. These batteries MAY last 18 months before they have to be replaced. When they go bad they leak acid. I would hesitate to ever recommend a lawn mower from Ryobi, and after this experience, I may never purchase an electric mower again. August 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by How to make your battery last. This is my third in 5 yrs. The problem isn't the battery, it's the charger! The charging regulator is not very good so if you leave it connected, the battery will overcharge, swell up, and die! I use an inexpensive wall mounted timer now and only charge for as long as needed - about 2hrs for a 3/4 discharge in my case. Lost the last battery because I forgot it was on the charger for a week! Looked like it was ready to explode! Try it and good luck. August 23, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Ryobi 48volt Lead acid replacement battery Original battery lasted 5 years. For the replacement cost of $129.00 thats just under $26.00 a year. It is good to mow your grass and not smell like a gas station every time you use it. August 25, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 48 volt battery Batteries do not last long. 1st one lasted 4 months August 2, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Be vewy cawful I don't know which battery they want me to review so I'll group them. The first one received in this round failed in the first month. I returned it rather than warranty it so I could restart the clock. These batteries cost about ten times what I've spent on gas per year but their pollution contribution happens somewhere else. Having to protect the battery from ambient temperature all summer is a pain ( keep below 80 degrees). These batteries haven't given good service in the past, I'm hoping for better now that I know to keep them in the house. I'll let the lawn die off this summer so I don't have to expose the mower to high temperatures. I don't think HD should have sold these mowers on the Southwest if they can't stand the heat. June 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 48-Volt Battery It came charged up and easy to install and it was easy to order on-line. July 20, 2016
