I purchased the Ryobi 3-1/4 inch hand planer to refinish a tough piece of hard maple. It is easy to hold and use and adjustable to several thicknesses for ease of removing material. The sawdust bag is a bit small but it couldn't be made too much bigger without making the planer unweildy. Easy to empty the bag, though. This is a good product for any amateur woodworker who wants to get a good smooth finish on a carpentry job. Just a note: the materials that come with the hand planer recommend that it be used only for narrow pieces of wood, like the edges of doors. I have used it successfully for planing a large piece of maple that is about 23 inches wide. The results have been good.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by RickD Barely adequate
This is an inexpensive and cheap planer. It does accomplish non-precision planing jobs efficiently and has adequate power, but it does not have fine-enough adjustment steps to allow fine finish work. It is OK for planing floor joists down to level and that sort of rough planing, but very difficult to achieve any precision finish planing with. Even the "zero" depth setting will plane off about 1/32nd of an inch. I guess that is to be expected from a $70 power tool. I am not really dissatisfied with it, but wish I had spent more for higher quality. It is a reasonable value if you know its limitations and need it for not-too-critical material removal.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SiberianDIYer Impressive!
I highly reccomend this planer! I was in the middle of home renovations, and I needed to plane a door easily and quickly (never planed a door before). I selected this planer following a review I read. IMPRESSIVE! I cannot compare with other brands but, from my perspective as an amateur DIY, this tool performed extremely well on my first job. Easy to set-up, easy to use, blade adjustments are very precise, and the shaving collection bag is a big plus for me. Highly reccomended. For the price, it does the job very well. All and all, this planer helped me to do a job like a pro would.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Doorhanger Spent 2 days working on trying to fit new doors!!! Um Door
My father always told me, "right tool for the right job". At sometime in my life I thought I knew better and moved on from his teaching. So I attempted to tackle fitting 5 Slab doors in my house. Using a circular saw, router, and a palm sander I struggled to fit 1 door for 2 days, finally ending my epic struggle with a brand new broken door and a broken pride. After doing some research and reading the reviews online I purchased this planer from the local store. 3 hours later.... REALLY 3 hours later, I was putting the last hinge on my newly fitted doors, yep all 5 installed and hanging proudly in my doorways.

I did 3 doors in about a half hour, and had never used an electric planer before. The doors look great.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dave Power, long extension cord, easy to use, fast,
Dave,,, Nick I have the same problem with planeing wide boards that I have cut from logs,,,I make full length cuts of the board, over lap each cut about 1/4 inch,,, takes 3 to 4 cuts to clean up the board, and when I am done, I have a ridge on the left side of each cut,,, In trying to get rid of this ridge I go back over it at the 0 setting for depth, it will remove the original ridge, but leaves another ridge on the left side again,,,Looking at the blades on the machine, you can see they are not level with the base of the planer,,, Going to take it back and see what the store tells me about the problem,,,

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Jim Quite a handy product.
This product is quite handy preformes well for small jobs such as planeing doors, 2x4's, etc. Definatly like the dual side discharge with output toggle to change dust bag output from left to right sides. Comes with a right agle varible width edging guide. Very handy for planeing edges of smaller pieces of wood. Kick stand at back bottom is also very handy. Mostly plastic but does feel solid under use.
My first complaint is that the depth adjustment is not continuously variable but instead has click stops. Second lack of any metal parts exept the front portion of the base. This gives it a cheap look.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by mybuell Great planer!
We needed a small hand held planer for those unexpected issues that come up and pieces don't fit exactly the way you want. Simple set up; light weight; need to read manual so you push down and press front to back as you begin and end planing so you don't gouge work area. I would recommend this product.
