Can you use this router with the Porter-Cable dovetail jig?

Asked by: Chuck
I'm finding it to be a pain to set up with the dovetail jig. Ryobi does not make base plates that work with guide bushing for their routers, so you will have to make your own or buy one of a different router and drill pilot holes. Wish I had just started out with a different router instead.

Is this router variable speed?

Asked by: dave
Nope. You can turn it on and off and adjust the depth. That's all. You don't get a lot of bells and whistles for the price but it's really solid for what it is.

8.5-Amp Fixed Base Router is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great router for the money This is a great router in general, but especially for the price. My only criticism is that the bracket on the side of the router body for adjusting the depth was a little loose, which sometimes made fine-tuning the depth a little challenging. My only advice before buying this router is to check what bits you think you might use. For what I'm doing, almost every bit I've looked at requires a 1/2" shank and this router only supports 1/4" shanks. If it weren't for that, this router would be an absolute no brainer. But even with only a 1/4" collet, this is still a great router for most uses. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Router One of the best routers I have ever purchased. The 1.5 HP motor has plenty of power to get through any type of wood. I used it to make these hidden hinge inserts on a recent bathroom remodel. I work alone and consider myself a craftsman and I need to rely on excellent quality tools at fair prices and this router is one of them.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from What could have been... This router could have been a great router, but as I have experienced with other Ryobi tools, the manufacturer skimps on quality in areas that are critical to making the tool accurate. I purchased this router, and have been using it for about a year now. Since the very first time I used it, I have been unable to route anything cleanly or accurately. I'm new to woodworking, so I assumed it was just my lack of skill. I even built a nice router sled for it, but when using the router sled I still ended up with sloppy, uneven surfaces. I was beginning to get discouraged with woodworking. I put so much effort into ensuring that the router sled was built with high level of accuracy. When I built it, I used a digital caliper to verify every board was precisely to the desired dimensions. I verified every piece was perfectly flat and perfectly square. So, when I was getting inaccurate results when using it, I figured it was just me. I had failed to get something somewhere in the build correct, which made me feel horribly defeated. Then yesterday I put the router on the sled and went over how everything was fitting together. That's when I noticed that the router sub base wasn't sitting flat on the sled. I removed the sub base and set router on the sled. It sat perfectly flat. I then took the sub base itself and set it on the sled. There it was, a small but noticeable gap between the sub base and sled. It was causing the router to rock back and forth slightly. The rocking motion is significant enough to cause accuracy issues in your work, but small enough that it doesn't create a pronounced effect that you can physically feel when using the router. I own lots of Ryobi tools and love them. I owned their 10" sliding compound miter saw for a couple of months, then I realized that the fence was warped so the blade could not be squared to the fence. I returned it, and bought a Bosch. I also purchased a Ryobi table saw only to exchange it, and then eventually just return it due to the tables on both of the saws I tried being severely warped. I have finally come to realize Ryobi tools are great except for when it comes to tools that are supposed to perform a task with a certain level of accuracy. Ryobi does not do accuracy apparently. Long story short, if you buy this router make sure you get one with a sub base that isn't warped, or you will drive yourself crazy trying to figure out where you went wrong. I also want to point that a lot of people will say what do you expect at this price point. Well, there is a Craftsman router that is readily available for $89.99. For the extra $20 spent, you get a plunge base router that is variable speed, has LEDs to illuminate the work area, includes a dust collection attachment, includes both 1/4 and 1/2 inch collets, and is beautifully accurate. Sometimes you can catch it on sale for as low as $59.99. This Ryobi priced at $69.97 is fixed base, is not variable speed, does not come with any accessories, has no hope for dust collection (as they do not even make a dust collection attachment for it), has only a 1/4 inch collet, and the collet is not interchangeable. It does have LEDs, however. For being a completely stripped down model, and offering literally just LEDs as its sole convenience feature, this router should at the very least be accurate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well I know many Ryobi products are hit-or-miss quality-wise, but so far I have not had a problem. I bought mine with the companion router table and overall I get good results. It is quite powerful. Hang on or it will whip the board out of your hand and send it flying! I was not happy with the instructions. They are not very clear but as it is a simple machine this is not a big issue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Practical done the job I bought this because I may use only once and hate to spend too much on this project. It done the job I planed. But, depth adjustment isn't that good like those fancy one. Every time, I need to perform a "test-run" before got an accurate measure. I'm okay with that. This router combined with Ryobi bit set, make me happy with my project result.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ryobi Fixed Base Router I haven't had this unit very long, but for the price, you can't beat it. My biggest beef is with the depth adjustment knob. Very inadequate. I've had better luck eyeballing the depth than using the depth adjustment knob. Overall, however, it's easy enough to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a solid product bought this router for some wood carving. it did what I wanted just fine. the router itself is solidly built and is kind of heavy. the mass turned out to be of merit when doing precision work because it gave me a better control of where the next cut needs to be. I am glad I didn't go with the more expensive options since what I really needed is to get the work done and it exceeded my expectations. on the iffy side is the height adjustment of the bit - it feels sort of wobbly when adjusting. but once locked, it's not going to change. so, I ended up checking each time that the depth is what I want against a pre-routed hole. but that's a minor thing really. in short, I am a happy camper as far as this router goes.
