Answer:
That large grey button that's supposed to turn on the suction to mount it to the wall? The laser is supposed to come on at the same time. I had the same problem and posted a negative review. The manufacturer contacted me and I just received a replacement unit that works just fine.

There's a grey switch on the side of the unit. It slides up and down to turn it on/off.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Laser Level Did not stick to the wall and the noise is vey loud and annoying. August 16, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice little gadget. Good for quick jobs where a laser line will help. Example hanging pictures. If the wall is not smooth you will need to uses the rubber gasket that comes with it. I found that on a non-smooth wall it needs to be left on while you are making your marks on the wall. Only can achieve Level bubble precision. As the distance gets longer the error gets greater (true of any Level type of measurement). But it is a inexpensive tool that can make small jobs much easier. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by work well. gets the work done with no problems Hi I see people complaining about this product that is noisy. it works good for me. it has a built in mini air compressor of course it make noisy. it's also only $20 bucks. if you want something more sophisticated home depot vast selection and more expensive one. but I guess you'll be complaining then about the price then. well bottom line is the product work good as it was designed. I have being trying it on different walls around the house and it grips just fine. Ohh I do not work for Ryobi nor Home depot I'm just a consumer. thank you January 19, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Walk Away! This level is EXTREMELY loud! It is more of a pain than just eyeballing it. It would probably be more accurate to eyeball it. July 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Laughable it's so bad! I had a great laser leveler and unfortunately it got broken. My husband brought this one home for me and it's absolutely terrible. Will not stick to even lightly textured finished walls. So much for thinking this would help me with 99% of my projects around the house like hanging curtains, pictures or shelving. And it sounds like a dying cow to boot. Returning this things stat. July 5, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Works well The laser level is easy to use. I do have three minor annoyances. The unit makes a very loud annoying buzzing sound. So annoying I can't wait to level so that I can remove it and turn it off. The issue with this is that sometimes you have to keep it on for some time to complete your project. Additionally there is a very flimsy part that is supposed to help with the suction. This is a nice to have but not necessary. Mine tore after two times of using it. Lastly, if you turn off the unit while it is still suctioned on a wall, it remains on the wall for a moment so you tend to forget it but the suction releases and the unit crashes to the floor. This isn't a issue with function, it's just something you need to be aware of. All in all the unit works well and made my project so much easier. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Impulse buy but awesome It does as advertised, stays up on the wall with suction July 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by First one was defective, got a new one and works fine! Being 100% honest here, the first one of these that I bought was defective: the air pump didn't work, and if I recall correctly the laser wouldn't turn on either. I returned it. Later on I received a new one (was contacted by Ryobi customer support about my review, they sent me one), and it does what it says on the box: sticks to the wall, has a level built in, and puts out a laser in a straight line. For hanging pictures or shelves, it works just fine, and it's really easy to set up and use. I haven't tried it for anything else, so I can't comment, but so long as your project has room for sticking a coffee-cup sized disc to the wall on the side, this should do the trick. Hard to beat for the price, I think, but test it out in the parking lot (stick it to the inside window of your car) to make sure you've got a good unit. June 10, 2016
