If you need to cut out a door latch, spend your money on a good 1" chisel instead of this product, it's what you'll end up having to do anyway. When I attempted to follow the instructions and use it, I ended up causing damage to the door. None of the parts are sharp enough to actually cut clean and it just tore a section of the doors side off. Luckily I already owned a good chisel and was able to quickly finish the job, but I still had to patch and repair the damage that was done. I only bought this tool because I thought it would make for a quick guide but it isn't all that accurate and you're paying for all the other "features" which don't really work.

I had my wife pick this up for me so I didn't really see what I was getting before she brought it home... What I wanted was a jig to use with my router to cut the area needed for the door latch and striker plate...
What I got was this cheezy plastic tool you hold in place and bang on it with a hammer in order to cut an outline into the wood so you can then chisel out manually!
If you are careful it will work out okay, but it is very difficult to keep this thing straight when you are hammering it, and the finished cut is not as consistent as I would like!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Batman Ryobi Door latch installation tool... horrible
Before buying this tool I read all the negative reviews and positive reviews, and decided to give it a try since I am fairly handy with tools. But let me tell you, this tool is, in a word, horrible. Like other reviewers have mentioned, you'd be better off with a hand chisel.
I have pine doors that I wanted to install latches to, so I figured this tool would be fine since it is soft wood. But I was wrong, the chisel parts -- one that makes the outline, and one that bores out the outline, are too dull. It takes forever to chisel it out with the awkward tool, and in the process I ended up putting dents in the frame because the tool gets banged against the frame.
For the price, I would have been better off buying a good quality chisel and just doing it by hand... which is what you end up doing, just with this awkward tool.

I have 9 pre-hung interior doors to hang. This simple little device has worked beautifully for me. It makes the task quick and simple. I’ve achieved great results on each door, starting with the first one. A couple things, my doors have pine frames. I’m guessing this system may take a little more effort and care with hardwood. I’ve been using a rubber mallet to whack the device. That has given me more than enough force and greatly lessens the change that I’ll damage it (it is made of plastic). The template makes an accurate and well-placed score and the built-in chisels remove the material cleanly in 1 or 2 passes (again working with pine). This is a specialized tool that does one specialized task. Based on that, it may be the best $10 I’ve ever spent on a tool. Even if I never use it again, it was well worth the price.

This one works pretty good. The metal on the mortis can get bent if you do not use it correctly. These last a while, and then need to be replaced with a new one. I get about 15-25 doors worth out of one of these.

I just did 5 door installations. I tried it on 3.
It was better going back to using the method of fastening the latch assembly and latch plate in place and use a utility knife to carefully score the door. then remove the latch assembly and latch plate. continue to score the door to the correct dept and use a chisel to take out the wood where the latch assembly and latch plate would be installed permanently.
I ended up needing to use the utility knife and chisels on the 3 doors i tried this tool on anyway.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by tmhgator Works Ok For Prehung Interior Doors
I have used this tool on many projects over several years.
Most recently, the interior prehung six panel doors I purchased came prepped for the strike plate, but not the door strike. For the door strike, there was only a 3/4" hole. This tool worked really well for cutting the outline for the strikes. The chisels on the side of the tools worked ok, but after the 1st door I elected to go with my really sharp hand chisels for my precise working. This is a good tool for the price.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by JPat Helped some but I expected more.
1) I had a round 3/4" bolt hole instead of the oblong bolt hole most doors are predrilled with. The template guide did not fit into the hole. I had to remove the cutting tool from the template guide in order to use it. Which means I had to center it manually instead of using the template guide.
2) The round-corner cutting tool did not quite match the Kwikset plate. I had to extend the hole about 1/8" top and bottom after I cut it with the cutting tool.
3) I found the cutting tool hard to use. It didn't cut very far in even after many sharp blows. I ended up getting it in about 1/16", then chiseling out the center before hammering the cutting tool a little bit further in.
It probably took me less time with the tool than without, but for two holes, it didn't pay for itself.
