I just looked at the 790r manual online, and I do believe it will fit and should work for you.
I would make sure you keep the chain oil reservoir full at all times.
Keep in mind this is made and looks like a chain saw, but is not intended or designed to replace a chain saw.
It is designed for pruning and trimming, not cutting down trees.
If you need a chain say I would suggest buying a chain saw.

If your trimmer has the "click it" adapter on the end of the shaft, yes, it should work. If your trimmer has the "click it" adapter on the end of the shaft, yes, it should work. Unfortunately, I cannot find a manual on line for your unit showing the "click it" shaft end on your model unit. Not to say that it isn't possible that you have a later model revision with that adapter on the end of your power head shaft. I would check with your closest local Ryobi dealer to be certain. I take it that your power head is a 2-stroke. The inside diameter of the opening at the end of the power head shaft has to be, at minimum of 1 1/16th inch as the outside diameter of the shaft on my attachments are 1 inch. There is also a click it button located 1.5 inches below and to the right side of the end of the shaft and 90 degrees from top dead center of the attachment shaft. The drive cable inside the adapter has a squared end. The attachments have the male end and the power head has the female end. Push come to shove, take your power head with you to compare with display units. Read Less

If you are able to change or remove the shaft of the weed eater, or you have a "Expand It" sticker on the Ryobi then you should have no problem in using this attachment. I tried to look the model up but was not easily found.

Hi homeowner,
I'm Travis from The Home Depot. Thanks for visiting our site.
Yes, all ryobi attachments will fit ALL ryobi units that have the split boom design.
The design has been around since they were called Ryan and IDC, before they were known as Ryobi.
I sold them all in my years at The Home Depot.
Thanks for asking,
Travis

So in short yes it will indeed work for you.
BUT if you have not purchased the 15122 yet, spend the few bucks more and get the 4 Cycle Gas trimmer. It has abundant power

It will also give you the freedom of not dragging around a power cord.

Answer:
I would not advise it,
As electric trimmers simply do not have a lot of power.
It would not have enough torque it would jam all the time and you would end up frustrated and simply disappointed.
The 4 Cycle I purchased has lots of power.

Yes it will. The following information is text copied directly from the Home Depot listing for the trimmer power head. "This Power Head a ccepts most Expand-it Attachments, so you can hedge, edge, prune, and trim just by connecting the right attachment. Accepts most expand it attachments (sold separately), not recommended for use with hedge trimmer and brush cutter attachments (sold separately)"

Bad news though for this model number power-head; according to Ryobi customer service there is NO pruner attachment for it. There is one for a different 40v power head that I'd have to go buy in addition to the pruner. Whatta sham! Read Less

Yes, unless the attachments are specific to the battery trimmer, This saw is compatible with any brand of trimmer that accepts multiple attachments, as well. One suggestion is do not force the cut and let the saw cut at its own pace.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Took down a fallen pepper tree in less than two hours I bought this for my 40v Ryobi cordless power head (RY40225) after an old pepper tree in my backyard got too top heavy and split in half. While I wouldn't want to abuse the thing trying to cut the stump (because it probably would), it managed upwards of 7"-8" branches with little effort. See attached pic. Am I happy with this? Of course! It should be noted that this was all done on a single charge. I even knocked a few branches off my fruitless mulberry with the remaining battery charge. We use Stihl HT 131's at work and this thing on a 40v battery pack gives the Stihl a run for its money. It's not as nicely balanced (I don't use straps) or as powerful as an actual pro power pruner, but it does the job it was designed for. Highly recommended for the average homeowner with a few trees to manage. August 14, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Really like the product, after solving a problem with the extension pole. I would give it a 5 but had to modify the extension pole. I bought the Ryobi 825 25CC Saw. It worked fine hooked up direct to my Ryobi, but when I installed the extension pole it would not work. I determined that the extension was 1/2 inch to long for the cable to engage. I also tried it on a Yard Man to make sure there was not a problem with my Ryobi, I had the same problem. After I shortened the extension pole 1/2 inch and remounted the retainer ball lock, it worked fine. I used it to cut some large branched off of several trees and had no problem. It really worked well. It was either a fluke from the factory, or there is a certain percentage of the extensions poles that are flawed. August 6, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chainsaw on a pole It works just like a chainsaw, but for limbs. It will get a little weighty if you have a lot to do, use the sling. I have had no problem with cutting up to a 7" limb with it. The chain needs normal care, keep it snug, not tight. August 25, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Chain doesn't stay on very well The chain keeps popping off every time keep puttingback on. But it good when first brought it August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Handiest Attachment ever! Living in Florida, there are always bushes and various palms to trim. We have the Ryobi blower and weed trimmer, so this attachment was perfect ~ better than hiring someone! Not only is it easy to use, it has a safety shoulder strap to help carry and the directions for maintaining are easy to follow! July 19, 2016
