This is the reason I bought the Ryobi system. I got tired of renting gas powered hedge trimmers to trim the cedars along my very long driveway. I've had it 2 years now and still like it.
Obviously, you should NOT use this trimmer to cut through branches which are too large -- refer to the user manual for how big is too big. But for branches less than 1cm thick, I find that this trimmer is very good.
I also have the chain saw pruner attachment, so I often use the extension arm from that kit with the hedge trimmer so I can reach the upper parts of my hedges and cedars. And I use the chain saw pruner to trim thicker branches.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by AllYourBase Great for home use
I bought this last summer and was shocked to see the negative reviews. I've used it extensively on my yard and my mother's yard, and both yards have turned out beautifully each time. Granted it doesn't swivel 360 degrees but that limitation seems pretty obvious in the design, so I don't see how one could complain about it. Keeping in mind that this is well under $100 (I actually got mine on sale for $49) it seems absurd to compare it to the features (like swivel) of models like the Skil HL 100 model (which is $449). This Ryobi has been fantastic for me and I recommend highly it to any average urban homeowner.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by bluenote Limited usefulness
Advantages: long reach; powerful; cuts through fairly thick branches
Disadvantages: must be kept on right side of hip at all times to prevent burns from engine therefore cannot switch it over to reach around bushes; cannot operate easily in tight spaces due to long length of pole
Conclusion: useful only if cutting long, straight hedges more or less at hip height; as an add-on it is expensive but worth it if you have other attachments to go with the motor

This product is cheaply built. Poorly constructed, cheap material used, plastic gears. Lasted approximately 6 trimmings of my hedge. Now it is stripped. Do not purchase

I've gone through two of these Ryobi Hedge Trimmer attachments in two seasons. I only cut my security hedge once a year and it takes a half day of just cutting. So I figure after about 6 hours of use, these are breaking. No bearings inside just a cast aluminum gear in a plastic raceway, a cog and a little grease. Real cheap construction!! I consider these attachments a throw away item as history tells me I get to use them a couple times (NO KIDDING). I'll try the other guys attachment this season since they interchange with my Ryobi power head. Several video's on this topic. The Ryobi just can't handle the heat or stress due to plastic housing and light duty guts. If you have a "super small job" then maybe, but take it real slow and don't get it hot!!

this hedge trimmer is light weight when attached to the power head, easy to use, easy to attach, and handler very well when dealing with tall trees

I read all the reviews, and decided to give it a chance with the 40V trimmer head. I oiled the blade to start and while it cut OK at full power, it shredded the branches way too much, and the gear box cover got quite hot after a short time (worried about gears stripping as others had mentioned).
My biggest complaint is that it is heavy and unwieldy to use because of the combined length with the power head. I'm 6' tall and no weakling, and I am sure the other accessories for the expandable system that work with a low center of gravity are OK, but hedge trimming (partly on a ladder), requires a lot of upward and sideways upper arm movement, and this attachment is just is too heavy and awkward to use combined with the 40v power head, and my arms were quite sore afterward! Wanted so much for this to work out, but looks like I'll be resorting back to my old corded Black & Decker trimmer :-(
