My gas powered Ryobi expand-it engine died today. I've had it for about 4 years. So I was about to buy another one and came across the 40v battery powered version. I had recently bought the 40v battery powered hedge trimmer and was very happy and impressed with its performance, so I figured I should give the expand-it 40v engine a try. I used it on my yard today and again I am impressed. It works with all the expand-it tools I've already invested in as well. This 40v line of equipment is the best thing they've done yet and I haven't always been happy with my Ryobi purchases. These batteries give you gas powered strength and endurance without the hassle of dealing with gas and oil. I really like them, so much so, that this is the first product review I have ever done. The batteries keep their charge when not in use for weeks it seems. This is good stuff. I've always hoped Ryobi would make a corded plug-in adaptor that could be used in those times when all your batteries have lost their charge. I still want that, but need it less now.

I have a Toro 24V trimmer and when I trimmed my side walk and driveway I had to recharge the trimmer 3 times. Needless to say this was a real pain. So I bought the 40V trimmer trying to get a trimmer that would trim my yard with only one charge. Yesterday I charged the trimmer and it trimmed my yard on one charge and was only fifty percent depleted when I finished. Since I already had a battery operated trimmer I knew to allow the trimmer to slow down until I heard a click so the line would advance. I sprayed some silicon grease on the trimmer spool before using the trimmer and had no line binding while trimming. I also limited the speed to about fifty percent and had no issue with the line breaking. I will up grade my line to .085 for a little increase in line durability. A good trimmer for all but the toughest jobs.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Steve Really good alternative to gas powered trimmer
Decided to try this trimmer when I had problems with the gas powered head I just purchased a year ago. Since I already had the expand-it attachments it made sense to try this one since they work with it. I'm impressed with the weight reduction and power although under a load the trimmer motor will shut down. Probably a good thing to improve the life of the unit. It starts with a little delay but gets up to speed very fast. I've always used gas powered tools so if the batteries will last and keep a good charge I can see using this exclusively. Sure is nice not having to mix gas and oil!

We've been using the Expand-it system all Summer. In particular this power head with the: heavy duty string trimmer, edger, brush cutter and blower attachments. I LOVE the system.
I've been hoping forever that cordless electric would gain the power and torque needed to be a workable substitute for gas powered products. I was so excited when this came out from Ryobi this year.
It is SO NICE not messing with gasoline and all its maintenance issues.
Ryobi advertises this to have "Gas-Like Power." They even trade-marked the phrase.
I'd have to say the claim is accurate. It is gas-like. I'd say most attachments function at about 80-100% of the gas-powered version. It depends on the kind of job you're attempting.
All in all though, this is a GREAT product if you want to get away from gasoline. The batteries last a long time, charge relatively quickly (90 minutes max). You can use all your Ryobi attachments you might have gathered from the similar gas or electric corded version.
I highly recommend this.

The unit is replacing a 4 stroke gas unit and works great without the gas motor maintenance and having to prime to start. works good with the expand it units.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Jamesd Great idea...High promises...A little disappointed
My 4 cycle power head stopped working. I was looking for a new solution and saw this 40V unit as a similar price replacement. Online only took a few days to ship and receive but a 5 year warranty was nice. Unit is not as heavy as gas and is fairly balanced so arm fatigue is greatly reduced. Has at least as much power ad the 2 cycle and pretty close to the 4 cycle. It's electricso slight ramp up then full torque. It has a thermal sshutdown though so any extra load (long grass tangles) and it shuts off quickly to prevent damage.
now the bad. This thing doesn't last long at all. It says you can walk up to a mile on a charge with the trimmer attachment? The guy must be running. I can't get through 10 minutes of trimming without a recharge. This has extended the time it takes to complete my .33 acre lawn. I weed whack for 10 minutes, mow for 30-40, weed whack for 10 minutes. Finish mowing for 15, take a break, finish weed whack and then wait 30 or 40 to charge... then I use the edger attachment. ... and then wait to charge.. and then blower attachment. Now I have to consider purchasing a 2nd battery, which costs almost as much as the power head! Was considering the chainsaw unit, but 10 minutes of load isn't enough.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Fred Plan ahead
I'm Enjoying the new trimmer but it is good to plan ahead. Being that it's fall, not much weed eating needs to be done. Just edging and blowing. I also trim the neighbors lawn so buying an extra battery was a must. I like that all my attachments work with the new trimmer. I normally like to weed eat and edge, plug the battery in while I mow, then blow off the clippings and leaves. All it takes is little planning.
