Will this work on a 40 V Roybi Expand It String Trimmer

Asked by: DJT
It will work but is not recommended. The motor is more likely to burn out because of the strain.

Can you attach a skill saw blade to this attachment?

If you can, what kind of blade is recommended?
Asked by: WRDPVD
No! It specifically shows/states not to install saw blades on it. From a safety point of view, it cant be done safely. If you do choose to do it that way, keep every living thing away when you do. Plus the motor is not strong enough to turn the RPM's needed for a clean cut. Ask yourself if you would use your skill saw to cut whatever you would do on the brush cutter with a saw blade. Different tools for different jobs. If you want to seriously cut something using the expand-it power head, get the pole saw attachment. It cuts great!

Customer Reviews

Expand-It 8 in. Brush-Cutter Trimmer Attachment is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 182.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly good attachment!! I have some small trees and brush growing in my back yard. I have been looking for an inexpensive way to remove them easily. I had bought a new Ryobi String Trimmer to replace another brand that was not working as well as it could. I discovered that the EXPANDIT system included the brush cutter. I ordered it online from Home Depot. It came quickly and worked exactly as they said it would, in fact I would say better. It mowed through everything I wanted to cut. It is a really great tool and well worth having. I was even able to trim so low hanging ground branches from my lilacs and hedge, some small unwanted trees as well. I am very happy with it, and very glad I bought it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great with my 40-volt Ryobi weed whacker I read a review somewhere that said this attachment does not work with the 40-volt Ryobi, dual-line "attachment-capable" weed eater, but mine fit perfectly and within 3 or 4 minutes after opening the box, I was laying waste to all sorts of thorn bushes, small vines, heavy brush, and even small trees (1/2" to 5/8" stalks). And the best part is, after almost an hour of cutting, I had 2 bars left on my battery. The Ryobi battery system is SO much better than 2-stroke gas. I nicknamed my Ryobi gas-powered expandable weed eater the "Widowmaker" because I almost had a heart attack every time I had to start it. Even my teenage son screamed at it. Eventually, the pull cord broke and I tossed it out. But this electric beast really gets the job done. I have a 1-acre suburban lot with a wooded edge, and the brush keeps trying to creep in and take over. Not anymore. I've only had this for a week, but it seems to be well-built. It comes with a heavy handle assembly and a new shoulder strap, which I haven't used yet. The fence in the second photo was covered in vines, thorn bushes, and branches. Naturally, you have to be careful when clearing around a chain-link fence or other metal objects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceded my expectations Just bought a house and it had a privacy fence at the back that needed repair. Issue was behind the fence was overgrown so thick that you could even reach to do work. I believe it was cat nine tails (they had reached 7-8 ft in height) it cut through these with ease. Also had ivy running all through the growth, I was worried these would wrap up and bind the weed eater but had no such issue. On the first clearing of the fence line (it runs 150 ft) I focused mainly on cutting weeds. I went back afterwards and cut down saplings and know that while it takes more effort it will cut through 1" vines and saplings. One small note is that use a rake in tandem while clearing out this high of growth. Cut through then rake out of the way

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great on small brush and tall grass. Had to trim some overgrowth on a hillside at a home my wife was selling. My string line trimmer kept getting tangled up and bogged down in the heavy tall grass. Went to home depot to check out this attatchment and figured it had to be better than the attaatchment I was using. Boy was I right! It installs easily and sounds great when it gets up to speed. It cut through the tall grass and small brush without ever getting clogged. I was very please with the results and the amount of time this device saved me. Was well worth the cost. It's not going to cut down small trees but if you have small brush or tall thick field grass it will take care of it with ease.

Initially, I didn't want to spend the extra money on purchasing this attachment. But I was struggling to the weeds and shrubs from my front yard to months. I was wasting a lot of the trimming string and time, because the weeds were so thick that it would continuously cut the line and was struggling so bad, that I would give up half way through, so the job was never completed. With this tool, I was done within an hour's time, with energy to spare to rake up it all up too. Best purchase ever!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tears through the brush! I bought this to clear out a large area of thick prickly bush and it went through it like a hot knife goes through butter. It was easy to use and I love the handle and shoulder strap that came with it. I put those on and they help so much with holding the trimmer. Takes stress off the back and arms. They should have these items come with the trimmer itself. This was well worth the price and I would recommend to anyone who may have to do some brush trimming, even if only once in a while, it is worth it. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good cutter, but lade needs a cutting edge. Just bought this cutter today, and the first thing i noticed is what another reviewer stated; the blade has Zero (0!) Sharpness. Its completly blunt. I tried it for a few minutes and it tries to beat the brush to death instead of cutting it. I took the blade off and put a cutting edge on it with an angle grinder, and presto!, much better! What are these designers thinking? Safety? Thats like putting a lawn mower blade on your mower with a flat edge. It wont cut hot butter. So except for a simple mod, its a pretty good tool. A little pricey, but now it works well enough. Lets see if it holds up.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does The Job I bought this brush cutter after trying a Rhino universal cutting blade (which is plastic with metal on the edges). I put this on a Toro straight cut weed cutter. It attaches easily but I did not use the "J" handle. The blade made quick work out of weeds and shrubs that had a diameter to about two inches. You have to make sure that you can clearly see your cutting area. Stumps, rocks and metal objects will cause damage to the blade. This is a fairly straight forward piece of equipment and does the job.
