Questions & Answers

Is it durable?

Asked by: Cesar
NO. Clutch burned out on second use. Lasted about an hour total run time.

I have a problem to start my 1 year old unit which was fine last year.

Last year I used this unit mostly for trimming. After winter time I can't start it. Everything seems good: fuel line, electric line. I followed instructions provided on unit but all my attempts failed. Last year I had no problem.

First, check the spark plug,I can't tell you how many times I have something come in for a repair and all it is was the spark plug. Buy stabil gas line stabilizer and always mix it with the gas mix you use for the trimmer. When you store it for 3 weeks or more always let it idle until it runs out of gas.

Why does my Ryobi power head run great with the blade edger but constantly die with the line trimmer?

It's as if I have two completely different machines. I suspect the attachments add different pulls on the engine, but I need a solution. I can edge all the sidewalks and curbs on my large corner lot with one start when the blade is attached, but then I put on the line trimmer and I can't move two feet without it sputtering to a halt. And I'm using the same fuel, same start process, same setting, same hold.
Asked by: jefton
I have had a Ryobi trimmer for over 20yrs and mine started doing that not long after I got it. What I found going on with mine was that the carburetor needs to be adjusted periodically and it needs to be done when the trimmer attachment is being used. Once that has been done it will run fine with either one. Kind of a pain but doing the adjustment has kept mine going for over 20 yrs. It was still brand new when it started. I tried to take it back to Home Depot and the guy just showed me how to do it.

does the Expand-it 25 cc 2-Cycle Full Crank Gas Power Head have an air filter

Asked by: roger
It has a small sponge underneath the side cover (release it by pressing on the two tabs) that functions as an air cleaner.

Expand-it 25 cc 2-Cycle Full Crank Gas Power Head is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 532.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Waste of money I bought this weed wacker and all the attachments that go with it. I used the weed wacker two times one to weed wack my yard and the second time to Edge my yard. The next week when I went to use it to weed whack my yard it would not start. I called Ryobi and they sent me to a service center which the service center said it is a carburetor issue and Ryobi doesn't warranty any carburetor issues on any of their engines. Ryobi warranty isn't worth even the piece of paper they put it on. Ryobi customer service was not helpful at all and said sorry there's nothing we can do

I have purchased two of these Ryobi gas power heads in the past 15 years and got a lot of rough usage out of them without any problems. When they wear out I buy another one. Last month I bought one to replace my old one. I took it out of the box and it started right up. The next time I tried to start it the rope pulley was disconnected inside the motor. So back to Home Depot to replace it. I took the new one out of the box and it started right up but then it stopped. After about 8 times of trying to get it to run I took it back to Home Depot. I will give this third one a chance and if it doesn't run I will try a Stihl. What happened to Ryobi ? They used to be so durable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 1 ryobi 25cc power head 2 stroke Works great, much better than 4 stroke, the ryobi 4 stroke is a joke cant tilt it or it fouls plug & carb than you have to take.it apart & clean carb & plug. will never buy a 4 stroke again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the trick... This is my 3rd Ryobi expand-it. Can't beat the price, and they generally last about 6-10 years for me! Love the interchangable attachments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Replacement for Crapsman This Ryobi RY251PH powerhead is a replacement for a Limited Edition Craftsman 25cc powerhead. The craftsman was "limited" alright! Limited to a 2-year life span before the carb gave up, even while using canned, premixed fuel. Used the Ryobi for the first time today and it matched up great with the string trimmer and edger tools that I already had. The motor is plenty powerful to get the edger through some thick edge growth at the sidewalk while being much more quiet than the unit it is replacing. Glad I could find the stand alone Ryobi powerhead unit at Home Depot and I'm pleased with the value! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

After less than a year and 3 failures, this unit no longer seemed like a great deal. When I replaced my 10 yr old Ryobi and could just buy an $80 power head I thought that was great. I would have been better off lighting twenty dollar bill on fire... at least it would have been more fun. Recoil starter is a joke. Engine lacks power. Not worth fixing no matter the cost.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from RY251PH 25cc 2-Cycle Power Head RY251PH 25cc 2-Cycle Power Head I bought this unit a couple of weeks ago because my old Ryobi power head broke down. The unit was around 20 years old and the drive shaft wore out. The motor still starts and runs but for a few more bucks I could buy a whole new unit instead of fixing the old one. Over the years I have collected the 2 string trimmers, cultivator/tiller, edger, hedge trimmer, and blower. All in all Ryobi products have been in my garage for a long time including a whole set of 18 volt tools. I expect to get another 15-20 years out of my new power head just like the old one. Great products at reasonable prices. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]
