It will cut up to 2”.
I've cut mostly 2 X 4s, 2 X 6s, and a couple of 2 X 10s. Haven't attempted a 4 X 4.
Cuts composite or wood “5-quarter” decking even better. Ditto for 1 X 4s, etc.
Adequate power and I usually use the 18V Hi Capacity battery.
It works fine with smaller batteries depending on technique, wood, and # of cuts, etc.

It will cut to 2 inches at 0º angle. The data says it will cut to 2 1/16 inches but if the board is rough and the user doesn't push down on the saw it will leave a little bit of wood showing. So to be safe just consider that 2 inches is the maximum.

These small, lightweight battery powered saws were not meant to cut big wood. They were designed to cut up to 2x4's for small jobs. Anything more than that really needs to have more powerful corded tools. Read Less

The Ryobi ONE+ combo sets include the budget 5-1/2" circular saw, not this model. The fact that I would need this add-on to make 45° bevels in a 2x4 brings me much closer to just buying the Ridgid set. What a disappointing situation.

I agree. I believe the 51/2 in saw is useless since it can't cut through a 2x4! I was so excited until I went to cut a 2x4 and it wouldn't! Just barely too small very disappointing. Its even more disappointing when you speak with anyone in home depot and they say yeah it cuts a 2x4...to which I say show me please

The combo sets include stuff few who know about tools would buy.
If you are cutting 45º bevel cuts often on 2x4's this is not the saw you want. It will not be straight, accurate and will bog down easily. Cutting a 45º bevel with these kinds of saws is a painful experience.

This is the larger of the two saws. The 5-1/2" saw does work with 2x4's and does handles the majority of work for most people. At an additional $69, when I finally needed to buy this one I also found that I was using a circular saw for multiple things, such as plywood and 2x4's, so I now have a plywood blade in my 5-1/2".

ONE+ 18-Volt 6-1/2 in. Cordless Circular Saw (Tool Only) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 116.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome battery powered saw! I have a corded saw of similar size that is perfect for jobsite use when a single handed cut is required. I seriously considered the Makita, which I have also used but couldn't justify the battery cost. This saw performs about as well as the Makita for half the cost. Both are made in China I saw no reason for spending the additional money and I'm thrilled with this decision. Oddly, it seems to work even better than the 5 1/2" version. Use this with the bigger 4.0 Amp battery for best results. One of the best saws I've owned in my 39 years as a contractor.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from better buy a lot of back up batteries Just purchased this for basic home use, nothing too major, figured it would be perfect for the minimal amount of time I'd use the saw. When going to cut up a few 2x4's into smaller pieces it cut the wood fine, but the battery drains incredibly fast. A fully charged battery died after cutting about 6 cuts in a 2x4, switched to my second fully charged battery, that made it about 7 cuts in a 2x4.... so probably less than 2-3 minutes of actual use time I went through 2 batteries. Returning it this week and going back to a reliable power cord version.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Purchase I bought this for being lighter than my electric plug in skill saw. The saw is light and is great for light duty and some medium duty jobs. I used it to cut 2x6 and 2x8 treated lumber for joist in my deck. It handle it just fine. With a sharp blade it cut through the material. I also used it to make cut where I was at an unusual angle, with it being lighter than my electric, I was able to make more cuts before tiring. (as I am older and out of shape) The battery life is ok. Not great, but last long enough to tire me out. I have other Ryobi tools, weed eater, drill, impact drill, so I had plenty of batteries to back me up. I am very satisfied with the product and was a very good purchase. I will be looking to purchase their jig saw in the near future to add to my collection.

However, I just can't. Having so many batteries at this point I feel stuck in the ryobi system, so I'm willing to give them shot after shot, with a degree of disappointment each time. When you are using a fully charged 4ah battery in conjunction with a straight edge it works fine - I was able to rip and cross cut a commercial door no problem(using a new diablo blade, but also those doors have a very thin veneer and are constructed of 2"thick particle board for lack of better description). But recently I was framing for a bathroom remodel & had to rip some 2x4's down freehand - the blade binded up about a dozen times in 8'. I should have just used my corded circular saw. It also is HORRIBLE for cutting sheet stock - there is no blower to move sawdust & accumulates in front of the shoe, so your lines become very difficult to see. It just seems like it's a 1/2 hearted attempt at a decent saw from ryobi, but they don't have many other avenues to explore.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Moderately happy I had been looking for a reasonably priced batter powered circular saw to make a small number of cuts that did not justify dragging out my heavy duty industrial worm drive saw. While this will probably meet most of my needs, I recently stopped at Lowes and found that they offer a Kobalt 20V version that is stronger drive and and more sturdier built for not a lot more $$.

My biggest problem with this product is the idiotic "Safety" trigger that is not in a sensible location, and, when one moves the hand into position to depress the thing, your grip of the saw is lessened. I found it to be dangerous, and jammed the thing with a toothpick. I am seeing more saws nowadays without the second trigger, must be a good reason to eliminate the things.

Tried a few practice cuts and saw works as expected. Plenty of power and smooth cuts. I only rated this product 4 stars because I can not speak for the longevity of the product. Power is similar to the pro grade brushed saws. However I am concerned with most of the plastic parts instead of the higher quality materials on the pro grade models. That said, for $59 the saw cuts very nice.
