Does this updated 'Green' Ryobi Mitre saw have more power than it's 'blue & yellow' (2003 model) ...

Does this updated 'Green' Ryobi Mitre saw have more power than it's 'blue & yellow' (2003 model) ancestor ? Thank you, David
Asked by: David
The specs don't really indicate that this is more powerful but in my experience, while not scientific and purely anecdotal, indicates that it is more powerful. I can cut 2x4's easily as long as I don't bind up the blade. I use it for small jobs where I am going to be cutting a few dozen cuts like building a small closet or putting up molding or trim. I can have half the job done in the same time it takes me to hook up power and set up my 120vac chop saw. I take this saw right to where I am working so I don't have to walk back and forth. Being small allows me to use it in very small places easily.

Compatible Battery

Can I use the P108 battery with this saw? It is not in the listed compatible batteries.
Asked by: BatteryConfusion
The small or large lithium ion battery is compatible. I use both. The larger one will run longer.

I bought my saw online a month ago. There were no problems doing that way. My local store was out of them and still is. The stores don't have control of what they get,the quantity. That i was told by the store manager.

Can P102 compact batteries be used with this miter saw,?

I bought P102 batteries and chargers a while ago with drill, circular saw and chainsaw. I am very happy with each tool. The miter saw description does not list P102 as a compatible battery, but the ONE+ "hype" states any ONE+ battery can be used with any ONE+ tool. I am confused and do not want to order the saw if my batteries won't work with it. Thanks.
Asked by: Jack
Dear Jack: Yes, this is one of the key strengths of the Ryobi ONE+ line -- any ONE tool can be used with any ONE battery, and the batteries are reliable. All of my battery powered construction tools, including this saw, are Ryobi ONE. This saw is very light and easy to move from place to place, but well made. It is ideal for interior and exterior trim work. I hope this is helpful, Mark

Does anyone else have a problem with the blade stopping mid cut into the wood? And if not is there something I could do

Asked by: Jesse
This saw does not have a lot of power. If you twist the wood even slightly it will bind the blade and will stop the motor. Also the new lithium batteries will just die in the middle of a cut rather than slow down like the older NiCad batteries. This saw really requires the larger heavy duty batteries because of the electrical demands.

ONE+ 18-Volt 7-1/4 in. Miter Saw (Tool-Only) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 182.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nice for basic trim, but limited by size and questionable stops I used this saw, along with the Ryobi cordless nailers to do a large crown/trim install in our master bedroom (I also replaced the blade with a trim blade). While the saw did the job, and is a pretty good value for the money (considering the cost savings by doing it myself), I found the ball stops very frustrating and never felt 100% confident the stop was truly locked in the right place. That can be a problem with fine trim work. (To be clear what ball stops are, instead of using hard latch stops that click securely into a groove, this tool uses a ball bearing roller that "rolls" into an indent, and therefore it is possible to be slightly off center...I see this potentially getting worse with wear too). In short, ball stops are a terrible design, and the saw would improve greatly with true positive stops. Also, I am wondering if Ryobi is going to get with the program and come out with a slider like their competitors, which would also solve the "arggg it's just slightly too small" problem that I experienced a few times when cutting some larger trim. Since I also have an investment in Makita tools, I am on the verge of getting their cordless slider to take on my next project. So a note to Ryobi - take this saw, keep the laser, make it a slider, add true positive stops and add the ability to use one OR two batteries for 36v of power and you will have a winner. Also, feel free to send me one for evaluation if you make it :) Bottom line, for what it is and its cost, I recommend it but be aware of limitations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For light duty work I am a professional cabinet installer. I am contracted with 3 different cabinet companies. One of these companies does apartments only. The cabinets are Euro-style and are primarily made of MDF. For this work, there is no better tool. It is light weight, sturdy and with the 4Ah L-ion battery it lasts about a two days. The laser is easily adjustable, and stays accurate. The biggest problem with the laser is that after about a week of solid use the switch starts acting up. ( my boss has the same saw and the exact same issue) If you are looking for something to cut hard woods, KEEP LOOKING! I tried cutting a piece of 3/4" x 3 Beech wood the other day and it was a definitive no go. All in all this is a good saw once you put a decent blade on it. 7-1/4" I put a Diablo 60T on it and it cuts like butter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than expected I picked this saw up to cut used fence pickets for building stage props. I didn't expect much more than that, and would have been happy if that is all it could do. IT struggled cutting through 2x4s, but if you didn't force it, it would make the cut. I recently found a new respect for the saw though, when I realized that I was using the included blade and thought to myself it probably could stand an upgrade. I installed a 7-1/4" Diablo Demo Demon blade and this saw sprang to life! WOW! It will rip through 2x4s now, and the cuts are much cleaner. I haven't had it stall out once since changing the blade. If you pick up this saw, go ahead and grab the Demo Demon to go with it. You won't be sorry!

Only a few cuts so far, however the usefulness and utility of this tool is apparent. A good blade is essential, so I installed a Diablo 40-toother. This mini-me won't replace your 10 or 12-inch corded model, but it is half the weight and a good deal narrower. It rips through trim and one-by stock and, with a bit of judicious feeding, handles 2x4's as well. I like the on-off button on the laser...other saws have an unreliable centrifugal unit. The laser was aligned close out of the box and I was unable to adjust it perfectly without some serious bending, so I left it alone. It was skewed at a slight angle and, while it was easy enough to move it left or right, I could not easily fix the very slight skew, but that's minor since I regard lasers as useful only for rough placement. As others have mentioned, sight the laser only with the saw fully upright and then lower the blade into the work. The hold-down is screw-only and could use a fast-adjust feature. I have another clamp that has it and I use it on this saw. The method for moving the table is a bit odd--there is no handle at the front, just a plastic index. You need to lock and unlock a lever at the right rear, lower the blade and use the handle to move the saw table assembly. That's okay, but it's unlike any other saw I have used. The indents which index the saw at 90, 45 & 30 degrees are weak, so you need to make sure the index line is correct then lock the lever. I guess that's no more work than tightening a screw handle on other saws. Noise is low and everything lines up well for accurate cuts. Mine was square all-around. The base is 2 1/4 inches high, so you can easily make a pair of bench supports out of scrap lumber. The D-handle is easy to grip and the trigger switch works smoothly. It has a blade lock and stores blade-down. If you have multiple batteries, this thing should work all day. It's also a fraction of the price of other cordless miter saws. If you have scores of cuts to make in dimension lumber, haul out your corded model, but if you are trimming or have just a few 2 x 4s to cut, this little number will do nicely and you can tuck it away for quick retrieval almost anywhere.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from just as expected It is a great addition to my Ryobi one collection of tools. I bought this tool to take inside a house for trim work, rather than having my big saw outside and running back and fourth. It has it's cons that were all ready written in other reviews, no surprises. the con about it thermoing out is true on 2x4's but on trim and other smalls it worked fine. not to say it won't cut a 2x4, it does tax it, and let the saw do the cutting. I used it on a 2x4 wet pressure treated job, just had to slow down a bit. the other con I knew about and agree, the cam lock for the degree wheel could hold stronger. keep rechecking that it hasn't moved on ya.

I have a big compound miter for when I know I"ll be trimming a job but I wanted something for when I unexpectedly need to throw down some base shoe. This little baby does the trick. I wouldn't trust it with big crown molding but it's just fine for the odd quick cut. I also like it for plumbing bathrooms. I'll drag it right upstairs and cut PVC with it right in the room. Ball detents are a little squishy so I check with my speed square or bevel if it really counts but all in all she's a decent enough little number.
