The description says maximum cut depth is 1 1/4 inches. Does this mean that it cannot cut through a 2x4? (I realize that a 2x4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5).

It will cut a 4 1/4" board by 1 1/2". I cut some 1 x 5 boards ( 3/4" x 4 1/2") by turning the board around.
Also I have used it extensively to cut 2 x 4's with no problem. It will cut 1.5" thick boards.

this is for casing work and small baseboard, i believe it will cut up to a 1x6 which is about 51/2 inches.
lowes has a nice slicing miter saw for about $129 which will cut about a 10 inch board, it is not cordless but it is light and easy to manage.

A 1x 6" board is about as large a board you can cut, I get around it by flipping the board over and using the Red Laser to line up he cut to finish. No problem with a 2x4 for me.

One of the really great things about this saw is that it uses 7 1/4" blades. That's the most common size for circular saw blades too, so there are dozens of wood-cutting blades available to you at very reasonable prices. If you need blades with more teeth, laser vent notching, or non-stick coatings - you aren't likely to spend more than 10 dollars.

The manual says not for cutting metal, but im not sure if it means just with the provided blade or what. I bought a 7.25" metal cutting blade with the 5/8" arbor as the saw has, but that was before i read the manual. Thanks

Yes, it will have the power to cut it but it will take a long time. I believe there is a thermal cut off on the saw because if it gets hot it will stop working for a time. I have had this happen twice. If you attempt to cut metal on this it will use a lot of power and could overheat the motor.
This saw was not meant for the use that you are attempting. It was designed for small pieces of wood like mounding, thresholds, transitions, and 2x2's/2x4's for small jobs. I have used it for all of those jobs and used it to cut light aluminum channel for making window screens (with a 140 tooth wood blade). It does really well for those jobs.
I have even cut some 2 inch schedule 40 plastic electrical conduit with was beyond what was expected for the saw. It bound up easily and I had to cut slowly and make sure the pipe did not move to prevent binding. My options were a reciprocating saw or this. This uint gave me a much better cut that was cleaner and more even but it did push the saw to it's limit and beyond.
In my mind I can see cutting metal with this saw. Lots of sparks and noise for a long time and replacing at least one battery in the process. I would look for other options. Read Less

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 148 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Good for the price - you get what you pay for Probably the cheapest 10" miter saw on the market. Works just fine! But read through the manual :-) I'd bet negative reviews below did not go through the proper saw adjustment, as covered in the manual! The laser isn't OFF !!! Read the manual! The laser should be used with the blade all the way UP, it basically will tell you where the blade will cut when you lower the blade. What the laser will NOT do is remain on the cut mark all the way down! You need to adjust the laser first, using the small adjustment screw, again, ALWAYS with the blade all the way UP! When you start lowering the blade, the laser will "move" away from the cut mark... That is to be expected with this saw! The blade will cut EXACTLY where the laser was with the blade all the way UP though! Manual even tells you how to adjust the laser to cut right of, left of, or directly on the cut mark. 90% positive reviews of of over 135 as of May 8 2016 can't be wrong! This is a good saw for the weekend carpenter and small to medium projects! But keep in mind you get what you pay for, if you need fullpoof quality and build, go with the other yellow brand..... and pay 3 times the price! May 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by If you do trim work BUY THIS SAW! This little Ryobi saw is a miracle if you do trim work -- interior or exterior. Light but powerful, it is very easy to move from place to place as you cut and adjust pieces of trim. I wish this product had been available years ago; I would have saved a ton of time and effort. No cheap toy, however, it is easily adjustable with a tough aluminum bed, fence and clamp -- and uses the same 18 volt ONE batteries that power all of my other Ryobi construction tools. Definitely a 'must have' for construction / remodeling pros and any do-it-myselfer facing a trim project. Mark June 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great little saw!!! I purchased this saw for crafting purposes as I needed something to miter frames and build small boxes. This saw is perfect assuming you're not cutting anything wider than 4". I also upgraded the blade to a Diablo for a smoother cut. June 14, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Darn good little saw I was looking for a saw to cut trim boards with, first try was good. I do need to look at correcting slight angle cuts. They worked but was just ever so slightly off June 21, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great for the field! Great for the field where you might need a quick cut but without electricity!! 2x4? No Problem. June 24, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for Trim-work I took the miter saw out of the box, installed one of my battries and started working. Ideal for interior-and exterior trim work. Easy to carry from room to room. Love this little tool. May 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by good not perfect cuts well with aftermarket blade, accuracy is a lil rough gotta keep an eye on the detents for accurate cuts...its doing everything I need even in oak...I love it May 31, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good I love the portability of it. It's really good for light weight moldings. It cut 2x2's easily, haven't tried anything bigger. It's not easy to turn the saw to make angle cuts though. May 10, 2016
