Customer Questions & Answers

Do the blades spin quickly or slowly and does it fling the soil around or contain it while cultivating?

Asked by: Sichuan
The blades simply vibrate back and forth. Similar to the Ryobi Multi-tool, more of a vibration. They do not spin around. They go maybe a half inch back and forth. Not a tiller, but for me it worked ok tearing up some grass and soil.

will the battery and charger that i have with my weed eater work with this tool?

Asked by: marty
Works with all One+ 18V batteries. Mine works with the small 18V or the large 18V batteries with no problems.

Will the store assemble it for me.

Asked by: Dennis
Mine came via mail, only assembly was adding the blades and handle. Neither required any tools. the handle has that screw in thingy. the blades use a cotter pin each.

Cutting up roots

Are the tines on this cultivator durable enough to cut up roots? Trying to thin and clear out mexican petunias that have overtaken the garden bed. Thanks!
Asked by: cherryjello
Mine does of good job of cutting up quack grass roots. Mostly, the soil is loosed so that the weeds can be removed root and all.

I haven't used it that much, as the weather is just starting to comply. I have used it to till a raised bed garden and it does the job well. It does get hung up on the thicker roots, but that is what i expected. The battery life seems to be OK. I had it fully charged and it sat in my garage for almost two weeks before usage. I used it for a good 30 minutes before i quit and the battery was still good to go. I do wish that it had an indicator for battery life, but its not a deal breaker. I think this will do well for weeding also. Overall, i recommend. Good product at a good price point. Ryobi cordless products have not let me down yet.

The tines only rotate 45 degrees needs to rotate at least 90 degrees. Also bogs down if it hits anything heavy. Where the flower bed was already weeded and there were just a few weeds chewed on the dandelions but didn't really get the root had to reach down and pull them out. Where there were more weeds or a little bit of grass would bog down move more slowly. Weeding with this would have taken a very long time. Good idea and battery pack was easy to use. Purchased an 8 amp electric tiller that does get the job done.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from tiny but tough I use this mini cultivator on my hobby farm. It requires a light touch, but still gets the job done. I even use it along with a post hole digger to loosen the dirt between scoops. The light weight design allows me to get into some tight corners with ease. Let me start by saying I am a huge Ryobi fan (I even pronounce it correct unlike the guys at the Home Depot) and I have many in the One+ family. This "Cultivator" is a good addition, but not necessary in the tiller family. I live in Florida where we have soft sand and it does great breaking it up as a tiller. It will even remove some grass; easily on dead grass, not so easily on live grass. It is not powerful enough to cut even small roots. It works for for what I am using it for, clearing out St. Augustine Grass to put down pavers. So if you need a tiller, try the gas or 40V tiller. If you have small projects and the 18V batteries, then try this. For cultivating grass, it tears up St. Augustine Grass as it is considered more of a weed, may be ok in other parts of the county with other types of grass. The operation is more like the multi-tool, the blades (tines) just vibrate only moving back and forth a half an inch or so. Had it for about a month, used it for about 3 hours total. Kids can even use it easily (10 year and 12 year old).

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't waste $ and time It's battery powered so I knew it's was not going to be as powerful as a gasoline engine would but....all I have is a small patch of a garden and it struggles, makes noises, strains, better off just buying a gasoline one, trust me

Bought this because I already had the batteries and charger and wanted to forego renting a Mantis. This unit works in soil which has been previously tilled. Depth is limited to 4" unless you really work the area over multiple times. Does it replace the Mantis? Partially. Could I do this with a shovel? Yes. Is it easier on the back? I think so (I have arthritis in some of the spinal joints.) Is it faster than using a shovel? Not sure - probably not. Does is go as deep as a shovel or Mantis? No. Nice feature: the mechanism does not work like your classic mix-master - the prongs move both clockwise and anti-clockwise - which means that any subsurface root network does not wrap around the prongs the way it does on a tiller. Easier cleaning and operation. I've had this for a little over a month and used it in multiple vegetable gardens and flower beds. Does not do well if the soil is frozen, but you can work it slowly. Seems like there is a slip clutch on the mechanism to avoid excessive kicking when it hits rock or ice. Yes, it has met my expectations.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted This works really well for the garden for us. We can till around the plants and down the rows. A little heavy but still light enough for the wife to use. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

Works great and the battery life is good - using one of the large batteries. Our garden is all sand, so this will really dig up the dirt and cuts time in cultivation.
