Answer:
The blades vibrate back and forth about 1/4 turn, they do not spin. Soil does not get tossed about unless you leave the just the tips inserted in very loose soil.

The blades rotate back and forth. They don't spin around like a rototiller so they don't fling the soil.

The blades ( tines ) oscillate back and forth. There is no spinning action. You will have some movement of soil but nothing will " fling " around.

Hi Marty, as long as your battery is a Ryobi one plus battery, it will work in this cultivator. You won't get as much run time and power with the older battery, however it will work as long as it's a one plus battery.

Hello Cherry Jello! The P2700A is ideal for small gardens, flower beds and landscaping projects. Two tines provide a 4 in. tilling depth, perfect for weeding and aerating. This unit cannot be used to remove roots and may unexpectedly bounce upward or jump forward if the tines should strike buried obstacles such as large stones, roots, or stumps. Hope this helps.

ONE+ 18-Volt Cordless Cultivator - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 67.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good equipment Does a good job, easy to use, light weight. Not as much power as a larger or gas powered tiller but I love this line of electric tools, they all take the same battery pack and not much time to charge.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Worked well on formerly grassed compacted earth I wanted to reseed a large (~6'x6') area of my lawn that succumbed to my dog's toxic waste. Researched several small cultivators and tillers before deciding on the Ryobi, based on cost, reviews, and that I have Ryobi One+ tools/batteries. The area was quite compacted as it was once grass covered (pictures 1 + 2). Spent the better part of an hour to complete turning/cultivating the entire area. The cultivator did a very good job at digging, turning, and loosening the soil (pictures 3 + 4). I'm quite pleased with the purchase.
