Bought the Ryobi one+ trimmer last week. It can use the battery or a cord. Can this tiller do the same?

This is not a tiller! It is a cultivator. No, you can not use a cord. However, it does not use up the battery very quickly, so you can do what you need to do without running out of power.

Answer:
It's made to work with a battery. The purpose of the battery is to not have to drag a cord around. We have the multiple battery charger and keep several charged so when one wears down we just snap a new one in and keep going.
I am not sure about the tiller but if it comes with a battery then it is meant to work with one and not a cord.

Unfortunately, no. I assumed it could but once I got it home, I didn't find a place to use a power cord (like the Ryobi weed whacker, which can use a cord).

Answer:
Its a fluffer only. Not enough power to break dirt. I mean it will, but it will take a long time for a decent size garden. Better to use a small rototiller.

Answer:
Yes, this cultivator does have enough power to break up dirt, but I would not recommend it for use as a tiller on a larger scale. My wife will use this cultivator to break up new dirt to transplant some flowers out in the yard. For a small spot, it works good. But for prepping a larger garden, you would be better served by a tiller which can dig deeper and works faster.

For me, yes, but I'm not using it in hard soil or if I do I give it a good watering 24 hrs before using in that area.

In my opinion, it does not have enough power to be effective, even in the light and sandy soil we have here. I returned mine to the store.

Yes, the tines can be replaced very easily. There is a cotter pin that holds them in place, and changing them out is a snap. Replacements are available through Ryobi or their affiliate part suppliers.

Hello Homeowner26! This tiller is designed to maintain small gardens and flower beds in an area that has already been tilled. Please note that this will till at 4 inches deep and will not work in an compacted area. Thanks for your question!

If the ground had "settled" it will work, but you will be there all day working on it. It works best with softer worked ground then hard pack.

However, IMHO, it's not a very effective tool for weed removal. For overgrown weeds, I still use a hoe and/or pull by hand. In my experience, the 4 inch tines on this cultivator get clogged up with the overgrown weeds and the cultivator becomes ineffective. I spent more time cleaning out the tines then removing overgrown weeds. A basic hoe was just more effective. Once your garden is back in control, this cultivator will help you maintain the weeds. ONE+ 18-Volt Cordless Cultivator is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 80.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I needed I bought this because the previous homeowners had filled a flower bed that was 75% lava rocks going 6 inches deep. This busted all of that up with minimal effort on my part. Also, I have back issues and it wasn't too heavy for me to carry around. Originally, I was going to sell it after the flower bed but I've found other uses for it as well. I used it to till up my yard before sod was planted. Next I'm thinkin about using it to plant a garden. This is will definitely be a back saver.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good but lacks real power Good idea...works well on garden rows where soil is already worked. A little under-powered but works ok. Could stand to have a bit more power. Not really knocking the product...works well, just could be a bit better.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfull Product I have been dreaming of having this type of cultivator for as long as I have had my garden. I never thought this dream would come true. The shipping came to me in 1 day via Fedex. Really fast. As soon as it came I took everything out of the box. Then I put the Lithium Ion battery on charge. Both were included. Then I put on the handle. Easy. I had trouble with pulling the hitch pins that hold the 2 cultivator tines and needed help taking them off the protective cardboard shield and putting them back on with the tines. Then we went out to the garden for a test run. They plowed through the dirt so well. It will make my season of planting and weeding so much easier.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for small gardens I assembled this cultivator quickly and easily, without the use of directions. I charged the lith ion battery (about 45 minutes) and put it to work on a small garden plot in my yard that was overrun with weeds. The cultivator worked well and was comfortable to handle. It removed the weeds and broke up the soil down to about 6 inches. After running it over the plot several times, it left the dirt finely broken up and ready for planting. Running at full speed, the battery lasted about 15 minutes, which was all I needed. The cultivator worked well for this fairly small application, but I wouldn’t recommend it for larger gardens or where the soil is severely compacted.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ryobi has been reading my mind I have been looking for a small cultivator to use in my yard, to till up small areas and bare spots for planting and renovating grass. This is exactly what I needed; it is very comfortable tilling to a depth of 2-4 inches, which is perfect for grass, and it works well in small areas. I used this to prepare an area about 6 x 20 feet for grass seed, breaking it up and loosening it, then working in organic matter. It did the job well, but I'm glad I had a spare battery. You sometimes just need to let it work at its own speed, you can't force it too much. I wouldn't try to do heavy breaking up of very hard soil with this. It also did a very good job of de-thatching an over-grown area of Centipede grass; I could just work the heads in and let it wiggle around and work out the thatch. I am very happy with this device, and it uses the same battery as my drill and string trimmer. :-)
