Pros: light, easy to use, easy to assemble
Cons: battery is way too weak -- appears to be better on a cord
Just bought the 18V Hybrid String Trimmer for my wife for light touch-up work in the 1/2 acre yard. She was able to assemble it herself and used it with a cord while the battery charged. It did a good job on soft grass on cord, using the original 0.060"blue string.
First effort with the battery gave a very short 10 minute cutting time. Recharged the battery overnight and reduced the cutting diameter to 10" but the fully charged battery still lasted only 15 minutes. Looking at other reviews, it doesn't seem to be more than 30 minutes. Off to HD to see how long the battery should last.
The first spool ran out after 2 hours of cutting. Instead of the 0.060"blue string, we bought a large pack (320 ft) of 0.080" twisted monofilament string for the same price at HD as the 3-spool replacement kit from Ryobi and rewound the original spool -- easy to do.
Mixed results, but she can live with using the cord mainly and battery secondarily if necessary. And it's all about her, eh?
I'd recommend it only if you are OK with using the cord more than the battery.

this is the first Ryobi product i've bought, and i'm planning to buy more. when shopping for a weed trimmer, i wasn't sure whether a cordless one would have enough power, but i was pleasantly surprised. when i bought it came bundled with a leaf blower which was an added bonus. for a small subdivision lot it has plenty of power and the recharge time is impressive as well. i bought it approximately 3 months ago and i'm still very happy with my purchase. i'm looking forward to adding other Ryobi products to my tool collection.

I bought this trimmer with the 'bonus' blower this summer. I live in a condo townhouse and use it as my lawnmower. I can cut my backyard and switch over to the blower to clean up THREE times with the one battery before I have to recharge!! I would say that someone with an average size home/lawn would easily be able to 'trim' and clean-up with the blower at least twice before a recharge. The other thing I like about this trimmer, also one of the reasons I bought it, is that it fits my Ryobi drill and circular saw... total win win for me!! I would highly recommend this trimmer especially if you already have Ryobi tools.

This trimmer is great. I had previously used a rechargable Yardworks trimmer with 12V NiCd batteries - it worked OK but this one has almost as much power as my corded trimmer.
The battery lasts so long I can easily trim around the yard twice (15 minutes each) with full power on one charge.
I waited for about 3 weeks for this one to go on sale. I think I paid $125 and regular price was $150. On-line right now it is $99 - Great deal.
Set up was easy. A couple of screws to attach the guard and pretty much ready to go.
I didn't want to buy one of the gas trimmers although they were cheaper at the store. Those two stroke trimmers are really bad for the environment. I'm not really a tree hugger but those things are really bad.

I love this trimmer! I was impressed immediately by the power it has compared the old nicad one I was using. And it stays at full power right to the end. I was able to do my front and back yard three times before battery went into the red and even when in red there's useability at full power remaining.
I just hope the battery will last a long time and not fail after a year like a previous nicad one I had. Would be great too if they were to come out with an even higher capacity lithium battery (ie 24 volts like some nicads are).

I just got this and I,m impressed. It is powerful all the way till battery runs out, and I can finish frontyard and backyard with juice to spare for blower to clean up a bit. Feels well and works well. The blower that came with it works well too. Blows better than expected. The on/off switch location is right at fingertip. Trimmer adjustable head angle comes in handy for some trimming. Too early to tell if it is reliable and stay powerful after much use. If it performs poorly after much use, I'll definitely file a report on it.

Purchased this unit yesterday after using a long long electric cord trimmer for years. What a difference in time and ease of use for my trimming. Way way faster for me than before. Easy to setup and the adjustable handle mid way up is great for setting your comfort level. Weight is not too bad so try it in store before buying it. Battery very fast to charge up, only about an hour. With the Lithium battery it holds the charge longer and easily lasted for my garden. Only reason its not a 5 is the dial in the middle (trim/edge) doesn't seem to make any difference for general trimming. Salesman in this department on 4 May 2013 was excellent and knows his stuff. Thanks Home Depot and RYOBI for a good product. Remember with RYOBI products the batteries are sometimes interchangeable with other products so remember this when buying other garden tools etc.

I picked up one of these on sale for $99. At this price I feel it is a good product, at full price I think a gas trimmer would have been the better choice.
The battery life is such that I can do most of my yard on one charge (detached subdivision home with moderate size lot). As I gain more gardens etc. it will be beneficial to have a second battery for sure.
The power of the unit is adequate for trimming grass and some larger weeds. Even long grass (6") is fine. For day to day use around my house it is more then enough.
The trimmer is adjustable but at its longest setting it's still short. The cutting swatch is very small, they claim 12", it's closer to 6-8". The auto feed is handy but also means anytime you lift off the trigger you feed line. So you either chew battery or chew line.
Overall a good product if on sale, at full price I would likely get the gas trimmer for the extra swath and power. However the 18v Li battery can be swapped to other Ryobi's which is nice.
