Does anyone know why so much line is getting cut off due to the auto-feed

I just got this trimmer and am aware of the auto-feed function, but mine seems to be feeding more than it should. The manual says a quarter inch gets fed at a time, but every time I start the trimmer, about an inch of line is getting cut off. Why is so much line getting cut off and wasted every time?

You said, "every time I start the trimmer, about an inch of line is getting cut off. Why is so much line getting cut off and wasted every time?".
Was it like that with the factory installed line? If so, the spool is defective.
Or, did it begin to do the line cutting off, when you re- winded the the line? In that case, you might have installed the spool upside down, or you might have done rewinding of the line in the opposite direction. (never hold the spool in hand and wind the line)
When re-winding line, it is best to put the spool in the spool housing , put one end of line in the spool hole, and rotate the spool with a 3 inch nail counter clockwise. You should be hearing the clicks when you rewind.
Here is the manual, in case you need it.

You can mow a small yard with this but it is less than an ideal lawn mower. Does great as a weed cutter & edger.

Answer:
Mower trims the grass, so as the trimmer.
Mower trims grass in even height, but the trimmer cannot do that in a large space/lawn.
Mower mows/trims, but trimmer trims not mow.

String will not advance

This question is from ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer/Edger

After just a couple of cuts, string does not advance. It simply seems to get tangled in the spool. Even if I take the spool off, I can't just pull the string, it is that tight. Spraying with a silicone does not help. I bought some extra Ryobi spools and got the same result. Any ideas?

Answer:
I had the exact same problem.
Its barely worth the trouble, but you can take off the cap, lift the spool just high enough that is no longer locked in place, then advance the string manually, then relock the spool into position, and replace the cap.
The advance issue is so aggravating I am considering returning this edger.

Answer:
The only reason the line cannot advance is when you install or drop in the the spool upside down.
Please verify that you are doing it right.

Customer Reviews

ONE+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless String Trimmer/Edger is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 224.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little weedeater I bought this weedeater about 4 months ago. Wanted to use it for a while before I reviewed. Found it to be an impressively good weedeater, for a cordless. I had my doubts about purchasing a cordless since I have a sizable yard (1/2 acre) with privacy fence, curb, and sidewalks that need maintained. The Ryobi handled all of it just fine with no performance issues. I'll have to admit that the battery would not do the entire job, but, fortunately I had another battery from my Ryobi cordless drill that allowed me to finish. I like that the cordless is so much lighter than my previous gas models. The built in edger means no longer breaking out a second piece of equipment. The one minor issue I encountered was the motor would interfere with the release bar when changing from edger mode to weedeater mode. Over all I am very satisfied with the weedeater, and would recommend to anyone. Not sure why others are reporting problems with the line feed. I experienced no problems at all. Only went through 2 spools all summer with no wrapping or continued breaking of line. *Maybe you just have to be smarter than the weedeater.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome. Needs slight improvement For what it is. It works really well. However it only has one string that string is not bump fed it is automatically fed. The auto feed might be great on a gas model but on an electric model every time I release the trigger it feeds so I have to choose release the trigger and conserve battery which wastes string or hold the trigger which conserves the string but wastes battery. That is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5. Otherwise I love it it works really well. Especially for a 18v battery operated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from cordless, keyword cordless is the keyword, very impressed, easily put together, charged overnight, attacked front first then the back yard. didn't think battery would hold up, over 1-1/2 hrs. of continued use @ some areas over a foot in length, didn't skip a beat. still had power to go.. light-weight, easy to use, converted to edger then back, nice feature, great value... nice not having to mix gas & oil, pull like a madman, to get choked out by fumes..

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Mostly agree with crs1306 Grab and Go! ……….with one exception. This is a replacement under warranty. It appears there is a design flaw and I may possibly be returning this second trimmer as it is exhibiting the same problem as my original Ryobi trimmer. The line string somehow gets wound close to the motor onto the motor shaft. I have to stop and untangle the line every so often. This problem most likely caused the first trimmer to break off the shield which is a molded part of the housing. Obviously this shield is not doing its job and eventually causing it to brake off completely. I am using the specified replacement line and it also happened with the original loaded line when new. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Gobbles String This trimmer makes a beautiful, professional sidewalk edge, the best of any trimmer I've used to date. Converting from trimming to edging and back again is simple and easy. Unfortunately the trimmer uses string excessively fast and is very difficult to advance, always taking multiple attempts. When the line does advance, it breaks quickly and the tedious process of trying to get the string to advance has to be started all over again. I have a very small yard and am on my fourth replacement spool of line in 3 months. I bought this product based on the high ratings but have found the performance to be disappointing.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brush Cutter and Trimmer Excellent Performance. Great replacement For Gas Model. I have been using the Ryobi gas trimmer and brush cutter for years and had great luck with the performance and reliability of the Ryobi brand. Now that my son is old enough to cut brush with me in the back lot I added a second trimmer and took a chance on the battery operated design. The product has excellent power and the battery lasts long enough for my usual brush cutting session. Of course it is now the preferred unit between the two as there is no more mixing gas and oil etc just plug in the battery and go. If you are thinking about upgrading or buying a brush cutter or trimmer this is the product for you. I was so impressed I bought the battery operated chain saw and had the same luck and the battery works in both products.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great power, nice features, but WASTES a TON of line! The automatic line feed is very strange- it feeds more line every time you let go of the trigger, regardless of whether it needs more line. So if you use this tool like a rational person and let go of the trigger when not trimming, you end up wasting a ton of line because you lose an inch or so every time you let off the trigger. Very dumb- I miss my old bump-feed trimmer. Aside from this "feature", the power is good and I really like the edging feature, but the runtime stinks because you have to hold the trigger down the whole time you are holding the tool even when not cutting, or else it will feed more line. I'm probably going to return mine and buy a bump feed trimmer.
