Answer:
Hi Laniiz26. The battery with this unit is Ni-Cad. The tool will work with the 18 volt Ryobi lithium if you upgrade. However, you would have to upgrade to the lithium charger as well.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Just ok I've had this drill for a few years and frankly I'm a little surprised it's still available. It's an ok entry level drill but do yourselves a favor and spend a little more money to get an entry level lithium powered drill. Unless you're VERY careful about breaking in and maintaining the batteries they're dead after a couple of years. Also the chuck does a poor job of gripping the bits allowing them to slip in moderate to harder usage. It's also little on the large side compared to some of the more recent compact yet powerful 18v designs. Wait for a sale and buy better more almost the same price. April 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic Drill for the price! This has been a fantastic drill for the price. Over the last year, I have remodeled our home that was recently sold. This drill has done it all, from building a new fence, to mixing mortar for 1200sf of tile flooring, replacing blinds, sheetrock, and fiberboard siding. Through it all, the two batteries have been plenty for me to consistently use. I'm a huge fan of Ryobi. Always the best bang for the buck! August 23, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pros & Cons The Ryobi 18 Volt Cordless is a decent drill at the price point. We have purchased these drills for our employees for many years. The self-tightening chucks seem to slip quite often. Occasionally the chucks seem to be out of alignment and do not turn in perfect circles. Batteries wear out after about a year of service and are a major expense issue. Otherwise, the drill has survived falls from eight foot ladders. The torque and strength and 1600 RPM speed are quite sufficient. The load settings are simple and adequate for most projects. We use these drills daily with one battery in the charger as backup and rotation. The retail price point is the major draw for our firm. At the given retail we can employ these drills for designated period about one year and replace drill and batteries. Our experience has indicated that most cordless drills, even the higher priced, begin to fail in about twelve months given daily usage. Best bang for the buck. March 1, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Product Replaced one that froze after 5 years. Replaced it with the same one. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My Second One I'd had an earlier version of this tool for several years and had used it hard for building decks and other projects involving driving many, many pounds of AP wood screws. But I dropped it from a ladder onto a concrete walk and broke it. So I bought this replacement, which is just like my original except for a few styling changes. The new one works fine too. The current tool kit comes with an updated charging dock, which I like better than the old one: the new charger gives more information about charging status and will charge any type of 18V battery. I hope Home Depot carries this tool and others in its family forever. December 9, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Only lasted 9 months I wanted to like this drill. And for awhile I did. I've owned two of these, and two of them have broken within a year of purchase. They both broke while drilling into some hard-ish wood...driving screws in. Something internal broke. The motor still works but whatever it is that connects the motor to the spinning part (I'm not super technical with my drill knowledge) broke. After the first one broke, I bought another, assuming it was just a defective one. But the same thing happened with the other one I bought. Anyway, when it was working this was great. But that's the problem...how long will the next one last? I think I'll buy a different brand elsewhere... August 25, 2014
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by needs a 1/4" partner This is a great drill and a must-have in every home. However (and you knew that was coming) you can't use it with your smaller drill bits, for example, the ones you might use when drilling a starter or pilot hole. This can be a dilemma when a small pilot hole is vital to ensure a larger bit won't drift and cause damage. Other brands offer smaller 1/4" drills, but I believe Ryobi only offers a 2-speed right angle 3/8" version. I don't know if the 3/8" Ryobi right angle drill will work with the smallest bits and having only 2 speeds versus variable for a pilot hole is somewhat scary. Small bits need the lowest most intricate speed control. July 13, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Every House hold should have this drill I began my remodel business in 1999 and bought expensive tools, like dewalt brand etc.wand after a few years of working i found my truck was broken into and all my expensive brand tools were stolen including drills, circular saws. etc.. I didnt have the money to back and buy those expensive tools all over again, so instead i bought Ryobi brand tools. Over the last 10 years i have gone thru 2 Ryobi drills and still have them. I have dropped them from the 3rd story window, i have dropped them in paint, i have run over one with my truck.. i cant believe how good these have held up..Kudos to Ryobi.. I just bought my third drill for one of my property bldings and it im sure i will have it for years...Great product. September 16, 2014
