We've had two gasoline grass trimmers in the past. One was a two cycle powered Echo brand, mostly troublesome to get started. Our second gas powered trimmer was a 4 cycle model by 'CubCadet', We soon had similar problems starting it. We decided Florida was bad for gas engines we purchased a 'GreenPower' 110V electric model. It worked fine until the dust clogged the cooling ports. So now we have to continually blow it out to keep it from overheating and stopping. I finally decided to try a cordless battery operated trimmer. So far this Ryobi has exceeded our expectations. I thought it had the new compact sized Lithium-Ion battery with it but I must have read one description and purchased a different one. But All is well with this one, We're very happy and satisfied with its performance.

I thought that the trimmer would be heavy because of the battery, but the material for the rest of the trimmer is quite light. It is easy to use and cuts well. The handle rotates so that you can use it as an edger.

MUCH better than dragging a cord along or ear-numbing gas-powered trimmers. Simple to use, easy to recharge, light weight and long handle reduces the back-breaking aspects of trimming, and line is auto-feed.
The only issue I had: the NiCd battery, fully charged, provides about 20 minutes of use. After that, the shaft spins but without enough velocity to continue cutting. If you have other Ryobi products and charged batteries at the ready, that's not really a drawback. Otherwise, I'd recommend it for smaller, shorter jobs.

I would recommend this product. It is light weight and good for light weed wacking. It is very easy to handle,
no problem with the self feed, and has good power. It charges to full power in a short time.
The only negative only holds power for about 40 minutes.

Bought the Ryobi because I had a stroke and my gas string trimmer was too heavy and difficult to start with a yank cord. The Ryobi appeared to be the solution - battery-operated, lightweight (3.3 lbs), and a can't-go-wrong price. And free shipping! Very satisfied. Easy assembly. Battery life (referenced in other posted reviews) was not a problem - key is to not let the grass grow too long or too thick which would drain the battery. The torque is much less than a gas trimmer so that requires getting used to and is about equivalent to an electric but you don't have the hassle of lugging the extension cords to to other side of the yard and over fences and through hedges. Battery recharges quickly. Name brand manufacturer.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Topbarhive Good enough for me
This weed eater works fine. This is not for large jobs.
The battery doesn't last long enough for my large Home.
But it is good enough with two charges.
Lite grass fine heavy weeds not.
Using the machine is great, very little noise, only smell is the cut off grass.
I would purchase this again!
No gas to mix, no gas smells, light weight, perfect for me.

Feaures: 3; Quality: 3; Ease of Use: 2.5; Value: 2
I find the battery powered easier to use than an electric trimmer. I'm a short older woman, and the trimmer isn't too heavy for me. But the construction directions were terrible, and the claims that the battery works for 1/3 acre and charges in an hour were untrue. I haven't timed how long the battery lasts, but I'd say 30 min. max. And since the battery is hot, it has to cool down before it can charge. I can't compare this to any other brand or model though, because this is the only battery operated I've used. I'm pretty disappointed and may return.

I've had this trimmer for a year, so unlike a lot of the reviewers who sound like it's a new purchase, I have some use to back up my review. When I first got it, I was so impressed. Powerful, extremely light and no gas, oil or struggling to start. Just grab, squeeze and go. It cut great--even times when the grass was tall. Sure it wasn't as powerful as a gas trimmer, but I didn't need it to be since I just trim around my house and driveway.
But, by the time summer was coming to an end, the battery life got shorter and shorter, and the power waned right along with it. Now a year after purchase, the battery lasts just a few minutes before the power starts to fade. And it never reaches the power it did new, just a year ago. I'm sure by the time summer gets here it will be unusable. Yeah I can go buy another battery, but it just seems like it should have lasted longer than it did. Back to the gas trimmer for me.
