This market is pretty saturated, which is great for consumers. I reached twice for the Makita, but just couldn't justify the price for my needs. After some help from the Home Depot kid, I had the drill + two LiOn battery kit. I lamented that the batteries were not the Plus version, but still thought it was a great value.
As I was heading toward the register, I happened upon THIS kit on an end cap display. Same drill and charger, but the two batteries were the LithiumPlus kind.... For the same $129!
Done and done.
Drill is comfy, has plenty of torque, and appeared the sip the battery during the first project I used it on. The little magnetic tray on the base is extremely handy; I can get used to this. My only minor letdown is that the light is on/off with the trigger. Other drills I've used leave the light illuminated for a few seconds after releasing the trigger.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by JBAR Excellent Lightweight Drill
This is an excellent tool. Having a bad back, I've been limited to lightweight cord drills. This cordless drill was the first i've been able to lift and use. Works very well and the reverse switch is in a comfortable position for quick one hand operation. A friend used it to build me a deck and staircase and told me it was the best tool I've ever bought. I have to agree. Thanks RYOBI.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Kevin Great driver, only one shortcoming
It does everything an LED lit driver does. But the one thing it doesn't do, is light the work area without turning the chuck. I've always been a Ryobi fan and bought this once it came out with the LED after using a friends RIGID LED driver/drill. Theirs would light the work area as you slightly depressed the trigger. May not sound like a big deal, but it's a handy feature when positioning your drill/driver in dim areas before actually turning the chuck. Live and learn.
I would still recommend the product. But if you're just starting out in the 18-24V world of cordless operation, you might consider an alternative if this issue is of importance to you. I was long down the road of 18V Ryobi options to consider changing now. :)

Pros-Great battery which battery works in dozens of Ryobi tools; great power; quick chuck.
Cons- as others mentioned, the light is nearly worthless, but then I didn't have one on my old drills so I was not used to having one. / Minor issue: There are two speeds on the drill labeled 1 & 2 which doesn't tell me much. I used a marker to label them "slow" and "fast" which made more sense.
I previously owned 2 Craftsman drills (14.4 and 16.8 volt) (both NMh). I was very dissatisfied with the length of time the drill held a charge. So I decided to go with this LiIon drill because the "plus" batteries came with it. I have had the drill about 6 weeks and already used it for about a dozen small projects which included driving screws into solid wood and drilling holes in joists to run electrical cable (a task I previously limited to my corded drill). After 6 weeks and a dozen projects, the first battery is down to 25%. With plenty of power and a 1/2 hour charger included it is a great drill. What was even better, after looking around for 6 weeks, and I finally decided to get this drill; the price had just dropped by $30.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by algy266 Amazing quality for the money - as good as the most expensive drills you can buy
Bought this 2 years ago to replace a Makita that had batteries that kept dying. When I saw the price of one Makita battery was the same as the price of a brand new compact Ryobi with two batteries, and a circular saw included in the kit, figured what I have got to loose, can just replace it in six months if it dies. Turns out it is not only lasting much longer than my Makita did, it is also a far better tool, smaller, lighter, just as powerful, much better batteries. And it has taking many a beating but never faltered once. Most of the 18 volt Ryobi stuff is really as good, and in some cases better, than the high end brands costing two to three times as much. Do yourself a favor and skip the expensive stuff - you are just wasting money.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by manypros4 I am glad I bought this.
So far this drill has preformed as I wished it would with the power and speed I have needed in the projects which I have used it. The light help drill where I wanted to and the compact size made it possible
to drill between studs which were at much less than on 16" centers. The light weight made over head work much less tiring. I have only one small complaint, the chuck would not tighten on a 1/16" bit, it did on a 5/64" one. I was able to drill for along time on only one battery pack, sorry I did not keep the actual time.

Fantastic driver. I'm using multiple tools on this 18+ LITHIUM BATTERY SYSTEM.
This is a convenient and reliable conveyance of portable power on my projects. Now with the latest batteries, there is a charge level indicator on the battery, which can prevent an immediate trip back-down the ladder, and, battery shelf life is exceptional - pick up the tool and drill after a month in the tool bin.
The driver has all the power that can be expected in a portable device. The clutch system is a simple and reliable insurance against over-driving attachments - you know, stripping, and it is reversible.
The newest driver is just as good as the older 'brothers', I expect as much. Have not been disappointed with Ryobi brand.
That's my opinion, hope you have as good of an experience.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Jeff UPDATE: "Poor Quality control" (but FANTASTIC customer service)
I posted a couple weeks back about what I thought (at the time) was poor quality control that led to my new drill's chuck falling out of the drill housing, as if had never been assembled properly at the factory.
Well, that -may- have been a rare instance of quality control but I did want to make two important updates to my previous review:
1) Home Depot has a great return policy and I was able to exchange for another unit (same model) that has been working perfectly and is (now) a quality product
2) Ryobi's parent company (TTi) has fantastic customer support! I was contacted by a rep who had read my review here and he asked for more details about the unit so they could track down why it left the factory broken. He even followed up a week later to get the store information and apologize for the inconvenience. I'm very impressed with Ryobi/TTi's customer service in this regard. Kudos to them!
