The string keeps cutting off (get shorter) when I start edging

This question is from One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Electric Cordless String Trimmer and Edger

I'm not sure why and I might be missing something here or just my stupidity.
For some reason, every time I started edging, the string got cut-off (got shorter) as soon as it started to cut the grass. I know the blade (by the cover) cut the string off, but why? Does the string automatically get longer everytime I press that start handle? any special instruction to use it as an edger?

Answer:
no matter if the unit is in trimmer or edger mode, the way to advance the line is the same, release the trigger for aprox. 2 seconds and then reengage to feed 1/4" of line.

Answer:
There's a couple of reasons why the string will get shorter. First if you run it to long and it gets hot. All you have to do is stop it. It will automatically feed itself to where it needs to be. The more times you stop it the more it will advance. Don't worry it won't get to long. Also if you restring it yourself you may be restringing it to loosely.

Where are the "figures" in the manual?

This question is from One+ 18-Volt Lithium-Ion Electric Cordless String Trimmer and Edger

Looking in the manual to attempt to fix a problem. It seems to feed string at will, and then tangles around the head. I'd like to see the figures to make sure it's assembled properly (as it came from the factory), but the instruction manual makes numerous references to "see figure xx" and there are NO figures. The text refers to a "switch trigger". There are 2; are they referring to the upper or lower one?

You would generally find figures in the first few pages of the manual.

Answer:
Yes, you can. The model is a P2003A. The Home Depot has it listed on their website. Copy and paste the following link: http://www.homedepot.com/p/Ryobi-One-18-Volt-Lithium-ion-Shaft-Cordless-Electric-String-Trimmer-and-Edger-without-Battery-and-Charger-P2003A/203838315

Answer:
My trimmer came in a single box along with the charger and battery so I doubt you can purchase the trimmer alone from the Home Depot website.

Rated 4.1 out of 5 by 620 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very impressed by this! I just bought my first house and have been redoing all of the landscaping. I needed a good trimmer, and the edger was an added bonus. Very simple to assemble (takes about a minute) and you're ready to go. The trimmer works great, but I was especially surprised by the edger. Every edger I had ever seen are the ones with the wheels that kind of "walk" down the edge of the grass. I was a little nervous about this one since I don't exactly have the most steady hands, but it comes out great! I have two batteries so battery life wasn't a problem for me because I always had a backup. Also, the string is a snap to change out. Well worth your money! August 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Well worth the money!! Excellent value for the money. It is very lightweight and is less strain on my body. Even lighter than my old electric cord trimmer. Tired of electric corded lawn equipment I wanted to go the gas route. The gas trimmers seem awfully heavy and way more expensive. I stayed away from battery operated devices but with the Lithium ion type it will last a long time. Also Ryobi has been supporting these batteries since 1996. While the batteries have been improved nothing has been obsoleted so I feel comfortable finding replacement stuff in the future. The rotation from trimmer to edger seemed a little weak but in use worked well. I wouldn't have bought if I had known this was another auto feed trimmer because of problems I've had in the past with other brands. This one is completely different. It only auto feeds when you let the trimmer come to a full stop for a few seconds then restart. It worked absolutely beautifully! When the battery is near dying the trimmer doesn't slow down. When the battery is empty it just completely shuts off, which I like. The battery and charger it comes with is part of the great value. It is not the most powerful trimmer but if you attack the grass/weeds from top to bottom and use the very end of the string it can take down some big stubborn weeds. Ryobi again has proven itself to be well engineered and the best bang for your buck. Looking forward to buying other Ryobi equipment that is battery operated, way less hassle without the cord. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by STRING LINE GETS PULLED INTO MOTOR'S ROTATING SHAFT I bought this for $79.97 2years ago and just realized that in between uses, I spent more time handling the string spool putting it in and out during the 10 minute usage. Now the blue string line gets pulled into the rotating shaft and I cannot remove it, I read the cust reviews that after several uses, some were having the same issue. Contacted Ryobi and they suggested to bring it to a servi center who fixes trimmers but the cost to fix is in bet $70-$80, and there is the $19.97 spool replacement each time. With all these costs and issues with Ryobi, I opted to get a new trimmer from ECHO as recommended by the servc tech. Had it for several days, so far it's good, let's see after 2 yrs. April 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Worked Perfectly Purchased this yesterday and since I already have several one+ 18 volt batteries, I was able to try this out right away. It took me less than 15 minutes to unpack and put this together and to go over the instructions. There are just a couple of steps to attach the handle and the guard. I was off and running and it performed perfectly and rotating the handle to switch to edging is super easy. I did have to switch batteries half way through (mostly due to using an old battery) but it had no issues with any of the brush or edge trimming that it took on. As compared to my gas powered trimmer, this is much lighter and easier to move around. Overall would give it 5 stars and would highly recommend. September 9, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Not the best, but a good value trimmer (3.5 stars) This is not the best trimmer/edger on the market, but it's a pretty good value for the price. I paid $50 for the unit and battery. Pros: Easy to assemble Lightweight More powerful than I expected Battery lasted longer than expected Trigger and safety not difficult to engage Cons: No edger guide Not easiest to change from trimmer to edger Ryobi trimmer string is not wound well Ryobi trimmer string is a bit more expensive Overall, I do like the product and think it's worth the $50 I paid for it. The question for me is whether I think it's a good value at $80 (which is the regular price). I suspect it's an average value at $80. August 2, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I will not buy another one. I only do a few things with a trimmer which are go around bushed and trim the edge of my yard. This piece of machinery feels cheap when you attempt to turn the head 180 degrees to edge. They other issue is that the string does not feed when turned at 180 degrees so i have to keep turning it back to the original setup, then try to trim around bushes again before the string will feed. I had Black N Decker unit before i bought this one and it was night and day. The only reason I bought this is b/c the B&D unit died after 7 years. This is not a good product for me and if I still had the box and receipt it would be back at the store. Thank you, James July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best buy always wanted to move to cordless, this thing is light weight, curved shaft for easy use and haven't run out of power in 3 uses approx.1-1/2 hrs. plus the batteries fit all my RYOBI stuff.great job folks!!! September 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good trimmer Holds a charge long enough for me to trim the front yard, recharge for 1 hour and then finish. Not too heavy. September 14, 2016
