When this works, it works great. But when it fails, it can mess up your entire project. It seems as though the lockout feature can affect the unit even when the little lock icon is not visible, or even when the level is out of the jacket. The laser is supposed to turn off when it's not valid, but I found out the hard way that the warning is unreliable - the laser will project even when 30 or more degrees off level.
Due to this silent failure, what was supposed to be a plumb line wasn't even close. I had to resort to a basic bubble level and try to get this thing to line up to it, then use the projected line. Kind of defeats the purpose!
I liked the combination of features on this unit. Too bad I can't trust it.

I borrowed this from my father recently to measure up a house. It was extremely handy. I doubted it, so i compared it to a tape measure several times, and it was always right on.

I'm a professional property preservation contractor and use this product almost daily.
I've used cheaper lasers and much more expensive lasers. This one is the best.

I am a construction estimator. I purchased the Tek4 laser distance measure (Model RP4010) about 2 years ago and it has been one of the most useful tools I have ever had, saving me untold hours of time. Mine was stolen a few weeks ago and I found it too hard to live without, so I bought a replacement yesterday. I opened it today and was very disappointed to find that the latest model, the RP4011lk, has been crippled in several ways.
First, the audible beep that confirms measurement or indicates failure to measure, has been removed. So instead of keeping your eyes on the laser where it should be, you have to look where the laser is pointing, then look at the screen to confirm measurement, and hope that the laser stays EXACTLY where you put it (good luck with that).
Second, decimal feet have been removed. Every surveyor and anyone making a technical drawing in english units will be using decimal feet.
Third, the old version had a button that activated a timer so you can stabilize the laser for a long shot. That has been removed.
I think the backlight may have been removed, but I'm not sure because I only handled it long enough to make one measurement and I got disgusted and returned it. The part that bothered me most is that the Tek4 tool display still has the RP4010 there on a retracting cable while they are selling the RP4011lk.

Used this tool on almost every job.
Saves alot of time and great when working alone.
I have dropped it a few times and still shoots level and plumb.
Before I start a project I always check my laser with a 4 foot level
to make sure its shooting right. You should too.
