Customer Questions & Answers

how thick a coat can be applied?

Asked by: BW
It applied at a minimum of 1/8" up to 1/4" can be applied fairly easily. What you want to look for is sagging of the material. We would not recommend going greater than 1/2" in thickness in one lift. So anything between 1/8" to 1/2" without sagging would be acceptable.

As far as measuring coverage, does this 50 lb. bag yield about half a cubic ft. or more & is too much wetness on wall prior to applying, an issue?

Video show necessary moisture on wall prior to applying. Is it possible to have the wall too moist or wet?
Asked by: CarL
Coverage depends on thickness of skim coat, 1/8" and 1 bag will cover 50-70 sq ft. I've done a lot of block wall basements and always start with a 100% dry wall and then use a big wall paper brush to dampen wall slightly before skimming but I don't drown it. If you are damp proofing a basement 1st solve the water source problem (grading, downspouts, etc.) then dry out wall with fans and dehumidifier. Might take 2 weeks. Start with a dry wall, dampen small section at a time before skimming.

Can this product be applied over painted block?

Asked by: belgianbrewdog
Thanks for your question. To ensure the Surface Bonding Cement properly adheres to the block and provides stability and strength to the wall, it would not be recommended to apply it over painted block. Doing so could lessen and effect the structural integrity of the wall.

Crack in pool skimmer area

Can this be used to fix a crack on the inside of my pool skimmer where the cement meets the plastic?
Asked by: Cathy
The Surface Bonding Cement cannot be used to repair your pool. It is not a waterproofing material. You will need to check with a local pool supply company for a repair product for this project.

Stairs

Can this be used to make a one inch skim coat over existing exterior masonry stairs
Asked by: Kevin
No, this material cannot be used on stairs. It does not have abrasion resistance. We do not have a product that will resurface masonry stairs.

Customer Reviews

50 lb. Surface Bonding Cement in Gray is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 1.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Great, Follow the Instructions! Used this to damp proof a very leaky basement, worked great BUT you must follow the directions to the letter! Buy fresh bags that are soft and pliable, hard chunks will ruin your mix. Mix in 1 bag batches in a 5 gal pail with a drywall mud mixing paddle on a high torque drill or screwgun - 1st add 3.5 qts water then half the bag and mix like crazy, then add the rest and another 2 qts water and mix until like icing on a cake or drywall mud - smooth but not soupy, a little wetter than mortar. Do NOT dump multiple bags in a mortar pan and try and mix with a hoe or shovel, you'll have a chunky unworkable mix, learned the hard way. I applied about 1/8" thick, waited 10 days after it was completely dry before painting and two years later basement is 100% dry. Used this on multiple basement projects, great solution for damp proofing but you need to solve your water source problem - grade away from house, extend downspout exits, etc.
