Answer:
That is an interesting dimension. It is not sufficient on crack resilience to perform well at 1-1/2" thick for a pad of that size. If you really need the pad that size it would be recommended to pour it that standard 3-5" thick (depending on what is going on top of it). If it is a light weight application you can mix in chopped glass fibers at 3% of cement by weight, so (.03*40*40) which is about 48 lbs Read More

If you really need the pad that size it would be recommended to pour it that standard 3-5" thick (depending on what is going on top of it). If it is a light weight application you can mix in chopped glass fibers at 3% of cement by weight, so (.03*40*40) which is about 48 lbs of fibers which costs about $125 or more...it more likely would be more cost efficient to order a concrete truck of enough mix to pour at least three inches, and that would be about 2 yards of mud so they will charge about a hundred in short load charge. Should be about 300 in total, and it takes away the mixing endeavor. 40 bags at $6 a piece isn't worth it because it would still crack at only 1-1/2" thick... Hope that helps. Good luck. Read Less

Answer:
Watch the ten minute video by concrete countertop institute on YouTube. It is called understanding reinforcement. Best short and thorough explanation of the system I have found and I have done a lot of engineering on countertops.

Thanks for your question. It's recommended to use a wire mesh to help provide rigidity to the countertop. Best of luck on your project!

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 6 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Stuff Mixed small batches in a 5 gallon bucket with a mortar mixer attached to an 18v drill. Easier than mixing in a wheel barrow for my project which was making a cement base for a post light out of a 5 gallon bucket. Could have mixed in the form bucket but had rebar/conduit in it inserted into the ground for more stability September 20, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Front Porch Concrete Project, I originally posted my review on September 15, 2010. Today is Sept 27th and there are MAJOR PROBLEMS with the product! The top lair is flaking off! Just out of the blue it is coming off in sheets. No one has even walked on it yet!! It looks as though I'm going to have to jack out the entire slab and start over (next time using real concrete from a truck). I’m 55 and have a bad back,,, this is just what I do not need! I guess that this Sakrete might be good for fence posts but that is all I’d ever use it on! September 27, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Front Porch Concrete Project I used the PRO GRADE Concrete mix and a rented mixer to extend my front porch slab. I was hesitant at first to use a ready mix bag concrete but a buddy talked me into it. Man,, I'm glad he did!!! It saved me around $250.00 compared to paying for such a small load of concrete to be delivered. I used my son's truck, picked up 30 bags and the rented mixer- a few hours later I was done! The job turned out FANTASTIC!!! You can't tell the difference between the original truck mixed concrete and my addition! September 15, 2010
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by It's like it came right out of the concrete truck Very happy with the way this product finishes out ! It's strength and finish is like it came right from a concrete supplier at less then half the cost ! June 24, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This product mixes well and has a great finish! I am using this product for footings for my new country cabin. So far I have used 100 bags and all were mixed by hand in a large container! This product mixes great, sets even better and looks great when finished. No complaints, footings are solid as a rock!!! April 7, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Strong foundation Used this product to support our deck and purgola. Also for stair footings. September 17, 2013
