Answer:
No, absolutely not. This sand is nothing like play sand. It more of a combo of dust and granules larger than play sand. If this sand got wet I'm sure it would be half mud.
Play sand costs the same or less for the same amount. I would choose play sand over this for a sandbox 10 out of 10 times.

Answer:
May or may not be helpful, but a good friend of mine whose husband is a builder has used this kind of coarse sand in their kids sandbox, so I plan to try it. I might mix it with a couple of bags of finer stuff, but I think it's definitely usable if you don't mind it looking like builder's sand.

Answer:
No. It specifically says on the bag not to use it for a sandbox. It would be to coarse from what I've seen.

Answer:
Sand doesn't burn. Just because it hasn't been "tested" doesn't mean you can't use common sense. You could build a fire at the beach right? Beach sand is washed by the water too. No different here folks.

We do not have a fire rating on this material. Without testing the answer would be no.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.4 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by As advertised Good sand for paver base above gravel and between pavers. It comes slightly damp so it is ready for tamping right out of the bag. July 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 60 lb. Multi-Purpose Sand Apart from the 60 lb. Multi-Purpose Sand being heavy - 60lb the product was great. The only thing I would suggest is being conscious of transporting it. The bags, if handled incorrectly can open on their own. November 3, 2015
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not for masonry I guess this sand has its purposes but masonry is not one of them. There are far too many small rocks for mixing mortar. If your mixing concrete, this should be ok. March 26, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Same as cheaper brand I needed some above average sand for capstone mortar. This was the same old stuff as the cheaper brand. They may all be the same stuff, just in different bags. Too many little rocks for capstone mortar. January 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Used for paver base and joints I used 14 bags for the base and joints in my paver patio. There weren't any stones or pebbles in any of the bags. It worked great for the base. So far so good on the joints. December 13, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best Value/Quality I use this sand in combination with a paver base for laying stone, flagstone paths. Product is cleaner than other bagged sand products and packaging is secure, no leaks. June 16, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product for the price This type of sand worked great for my flower gardening. May 19, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I do not know much about the sand…..but…. I must say that the manager Dan at Home Depot gave some amazing service when I bought the wrong kind of sand for my chicken coop. He went through great length to help me, made a home delivery and did research for me and that was just for a few bags of sand. I can imagine how busy he must be and gave me such undivided individual attention for such a small product. I really appreciated his service and will make Home Depot my number one place to shop over others I used to deal with. Thank you again. Alice November 9, 2014
