can this tool be used to install shingles made of pvc

Asked by: flyguy
Sure! The PVC shingle, like a cedar shingle, just sits on top of the exposure board.

Can these be used to install lap siding?

Asked by: deejay
Sure. You would be setting the siding on top of the board matching your exposure. The only trick would be nailing location. You might have to play around a little bit to figure out the best location to insert the tool on the previous course for the best "grip."

Shingle and Shake Easy Installation Tool is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 13.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great System Used these to install dipped white cedar sidewall shingles. Nice to have the efficiency of the system and no holes to worry about in our wake. We experienced a bit of roll-out on the ledger board we used (5-3/8" WRC) but nothing too annoying. Trade off for any drawbacks well worth it. Beats voiding the warranty on the manufacturers coating for the dipped shingle and moves faster than working common nails with ferring strips for most wide-open non-cut up situations I'd guess.

Positive features - ease of use, increased efficiency, ease of adjustments. Negative features - none really, it depends on user error. We used these as we installed 13 bundles of shingles (so far - another equal amount to go). They make the process much faster than using a shingle tray or installing to a snap line (which will result in an uneven look no matter how hard you try). There are two problems to be wary of that others have mentioned in their posts. The first is that the tools can slip down from under the shingle resulting in losing your level line. This is caused by 1) - nailing more than an inch above the exposure line of the shingle holding the tool from the previous course or 2) - simply not shoving the tool all the way up until it bottoms out and makes contact with the previous course. To prevent this problem make sure to nail close to 1 inch above the exposure, not half way up the shingle and for very wide shingles use 4 nails, not two. The tool should require effort to push it up into position. If it goes up easily you are probably looking for a problem. Also, keep a level handy. If a course is slightly off you can easily adjust one end or the other on the tool. It is terrific. I snapped a few reference lines just to add a layer of security. Finally, we used both nice, straight, common pine boards and 1" PVC boards for holding the shingles. The pine is lighter, thus less likely to weigh down and move the tool, but the PVC us certainly straighter! The carpenters working at the job were amazed at how fast we installed the shingles! If you have a lot of side walls to do I highly recommend buying a couple of sets of these tools.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product is unbelievable! These tools save so much time and so much money on the installation of wood shingles. My margin has grown greatly and they undoubtedly improve the quality of installation compared to how it used to be done. Every siding contractor should have these tools available....

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Shake Easy Installation Tool This is a really simple tool that greatly enhances productivity. The local Home Depot had never heard of it, nor had any of my carpenters with over 100 years of combined experience. This should be on the shelves of every Home Depot!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bargain, durable tool, etc Price seemed a little steep at first, but these are solid tools. Very durable. I've used them a couple times now and it really is night and day, compared to traditionally siding a house with shingles. This is much quicker.
