What is the drying time for sheet rock easy sand

Asked by: Anonymous
Setting time depends mostly on temperature of the air, temperature of the water you add, and how long you mix it and how fast. You can adjust the setting time based on these things (use hot water if you want it to set faster, use cold water if you want it to set slower.) Drying time is about the same as regular premixed joint compound, and depends on temperature of the air, humidity, and how much air is blowing. As you can imagine, if you have a small patch to do, you can speed up drying by applying a hair dryer over the patch. Thick coats such as the first embedding coat of paper tape takes the longest - allow up to 24 hours. In cool, damp weather, such as an unheated house or a garage, might take even longer. The final, thin coat could take as little as an hour to dry.

Is this what people use when referring to "45 min mix" for "hot mudding"?

Asked by: Vicki
"Hot mud" is slang for "setting compound". It sets up hard due to a chemical process, as opposed to "drying compound", which does not get hard until it gets dry.

Can you add water to your mix in the pan if it starts to firm up during the job.

Asked by: RM
Nope. Mix only what you can use in the 30-40 minutes it takes for the product to set up.

Can this product be used like plaster?

I have a interior above grade stucco & plaster wall, I have removed loose material & filled the deep areas. I am wondering if this product can be used to patch & even out the surface , with a coat like plaster. Also should a bonding agent be used with this. thanks in advance
Asked by: Elizabeth
You can fill in places where plaster has fallen out as long as the area is not too big. (you have to judge for yourself) if you have some kind of lath (wood or metal) for the compound to stick to. It is much easier to use and much more forgiving than plaster of Paris. Make sure you clean all loose plaster in the area you are patching then wet around the repair area and the wood lath (a spray bottle usually works well for this) until damp then apply the compound in a thickness no more than 1/4 inch at a time. Let it set up between each coat (about 30-40 minutes) being sure to mix only what you can use to make your repairs during the time you apply each coat. The final coat should be a little bit higher than the area around the patch so you can sand it level with the surrounding area. Happy repairs!

Easy Sand 45 Lightweight 18 lb. Setting-Type Joint Compound is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 20.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product From Sheetrock This is a great product. Let me point out first that while it says "easy sand" it's more like "easier to sand" than regular joint compound. I still find myself having to wet sand some areas to bring the compound level (especially on heavy fills) but still less effort to sand regardless. It is very lightweight, mixes easily and seems easier to apply than the regular setting type joint compound. I've also noticed that I have no problem skim-coating some areas even though the bag says It shouldn't be used for this purpose but once it's dry, it sticks to the surface of wherever you put it just like glue. Very reasonably priced too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small Batches Make it Easier to Work With Easy Sand 45 has a 20 minute working time. It sets up in 30 to 80 minutes. This allows for multiple coats in one day. I use it in small batches: mix one liter of cold water with 12 to 15 cups of powder. The mixed compound should just hold its form. I set up 2 to 4 buckets with water in them and then mix the compound as I need it. The worst part is cleaning up when I'm done, but the quick set up time makes it worth while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'll never used pre-mixed again I'm a professional contractor and started doing a lot of drywall work lately. The first time I used this in my own house I wasn't that thrilled with it. But I recently used it for some sheetrock repairs for a customer. Once I got the hang of the proper consistency, I couldn't be happier with it. Yes, it is harder to sand than pre-mixed, but that's ok because it prevents you from over-sanding. Once I got going with it, I could put down this stuff so smooth (and without bubbles!) that you could almost get away without sanding. All I needed was a light sanding and it looked flawless. I have to say that I've done a fair amount of drywall work so I have much practice. If you're a beginner, you may tend to find it a little difficult to work with. But believe me, practice and you'll think this is the best product. I'll gladly pay a little more for less product (as opposed to pre-mixed) because this product has such awesome characteristics.

A damp sanding sponge did the trick and was relatively dust free. Even though I made very small batches since this was my first time doing drywall, it dried very quickly. You definitely need to use COLD water to extend your working time. However, it still became unworkable after about 15 minutes. I would recommend this for someone with more experience (who works faster) for larger jobs, or someone new for smaller jobs. It is much easier to sand than the premixed joint compound.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great stuff I mix this directly in the mud pan, since mixing more would be wasteful for me, since I'm not quick. Read the directions for set-up time. Since I don't like the clock ticking when I'm mixing, I actually use an electric mixer. Looks like I'm getting ready to bake a cake! Just remember if you use any electrical mixing methods, to use a GFI since water is involved.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product, sets pretty quickly Being inexperienced with mudding joints, this took some time to get used to. I ended up wasting more than I care to admit due to it drying out on me before I could use it. There's a fine line between just right and crumbling. Don't mix too much at once and keep it close to you when working...and work fast! Once you get it figured out though it's really easy to apply and the results are really smooth, even for this beginner!
