Answer:
A bunch of the Magnesium one is cast out of Magnesium instead of aluminum. I think the specs say it is 4 pounds lighter with the same or at least similar guts.

Answer:
Magnesium refers to the base. Some saws use magnesium and most use stamped steel. Magnesium is generally considered better because it doesnt bend that easy although it is more likely to crack/break. On some types of wood steel will mar the wood and on some it will cause a chemical reaction.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great saw so far! I hate to review this so early, I've only had the saw for a month or so, but I have used it pretty heavily in that time. The saw is great! It is comfortable in hand and cuts very well. For some reason circular saws are one of those tools that it can take a little while to get comfortable with, I was able to just pick this one up and go. Visibility to the cut line is great, it does not have as big a jump when you first pull the trigger as the Rigid it is replacing. Cutting treated 2x material for decks is no sweat with this beast! Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by GOOD IDEA - POORLY EXECUTED I have owned 7 different Skil and Bosch wormdrives (Bosch has owned Skil for a long time. I have also used dozens of company Skil saws. This saw is horrible. The armature/commutator warped on the first day, which stressed out the bearings. Now it is fairly loud (bearings) and vibrates (armature). Vibration gets worse with heat build up. - I build stairs daily wtih my tools. SO ! the Chinese sourcing of parts and labor is/has ruined Bosch/Skil. My old saws were all USA made and bullet proof. This saw had problems after day one. An employer was given one by his "supplier" and stated the same thing. Vibrateing and noisy at the end of day one. ...Yes I changed the oil at the end of day one and twice since then... So the saw is getting returned this week....I did like the few ounces lighter than my 1677M. The higher motor speed is great. However the chinese suppliers and assembly need to be changed. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Worst purchase ever!! This is the biggest pile of junk I have ever had the misfortune of purchasing from Skil. I've pretty much used skil worms for the last 30 plus years and never ever have I had a saw last self distruct in less than two months. I will say that I've never owned a made in China Skil product either until now. This will be my first and last. While I was dropping it off at the service center for service, i was informed that this was the second one he'd seen in two weeks. Never even got around to changing out the blade. Saw was treated in the very same manner that my old 20 year old 77's had been. Pictures tell the story. October 10, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great saw I've always wanted a worm drive saw and finally had the opportunity to buy one. I'd always known that Skil was a good product from helping my grandfather and dad when I was young. I'm not a carpenter by trade, but they were. This saw is awesome. I have a few framing projects in the works, and I know this will last me a lifetime. I've read a review that stated the saw burned up, didn't last, etc.(must have been cutting steel) Let the saw do the work, don't force it. It won't disappoint! May 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great saw Have used many skil77's. This one does not disappoint. Also like the diablo blade that comes with it March 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Gutsy! This is a great saw with 15 Amperes of power. You feel the torque twist the machine as it starts! The first thing I noticed when unpacking this saw is the really nice thin kerf blade that comes with it. (A Diablo general purpose blade). The size of sole has been well thought out, 1½” from the blade on one side and 3½” on the other. The cable seems to be very heavy duty - important for its powerful motor. A very nice touch is that the depth adjustment has present marks for various typical thickness cuts (such as 2x lumber etc.). No tools are needed to change the depth or angle. The supplied tool that is used for changing the blade has a place on the machine so one should always have it handy when needed. My first job required some plunge cuts and it handled them with ease. The saw does not stand up by itself (blade down), so I found I had to learn to lay it on its side. The saw is light to handle. I am used to the blade being on the right of the machine but I quickly got used to the blade being on the left, which works well for a right handed person. The left side blade does allow better visibility of the cut. There is no laser line which may have been nice but certainly not critical. Instead there is a white marker on the leading edge of the sole that shows where the cut will be. There is a nice big solid hook that folks out which allows the machine to be hung on a ladder rung or 2x lumber. This is the first saw that I own that takes oil. This is because it has a worm-drive. I do not expect that I will have to top that up too often. May 29, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The undisputed king of the worm drive went on a diet and got lean I do a lot of fine woodworking. Generally circular saws don't have much place in fine woodworking - especially large, heavy worm drive saws. However nothing beats one of these for breaking down sheet goods to manageable sizes. I can stack plywood two 3/4" sheets deep and make a full 8' rip without so much as a whimper from this saw. Plus the weight is a benefit here. It cuts down on vibration and makes it really easy to track a straight edge. This saw in particular is something special: Pros - The sole is actually flat! This is been a major point of contention among worm drive saws in the 70+ years they have been around. I expected some work removing the sole and flattening it on a granite reference surface, but I didn't need to. The adjustments are wonderful and accurate. Very easy to read, everything locks and unlocks smoothly and everything moves as it should. This is something I am not accustomed to on a circular saw of any type. Both the bevel angle and max cut depth adjusters can be fined tuned which is often necessary with wear and tear. I was really glad to see this Power. If you are looking at worm drive saws, you already realize they are very powerful. However this not only powerful, but smooth. There is the tell tale torque twist when you first squeeze that trigger, but after that is very smooth. The included blade is actually nice! I am accustomed to not even installing the blade that comes with saws. Generally they are very low quality. This one is nice. I still purchase additional blades because I need a higher tooth count for my intended use, however for general construction in dry, nail free wood this blade is all you need. The ergonomics are great CONS Can't really think of any. As a lefty, this saw is a little awkward until you get used to it, but that is the nature of any worm drive. It is on the heavy side for a circular saw, but very light for a worm drive saw. Also be aware this saw requires maintenance. Especially oil and oil changes. If you want this saw to last, the oil should be changed after the first 10 hours of use, or within the first 3 months. As all of the gearing wears in some metal is shed and it's important to get it all out. Also if you ever overheat the saw, (common when cutting a lot of thick wet wood) change the oil. This saw has it all. Truly a 5 star performer. This is "the saw that built america". The performance is still as legendary as it was 70 years ago. It just got a lot lighter and easier to handle. This is a saw that my son will use with pride in 20 years June 13, 2014
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic saw OK. A little background on what I do. I am not just a homeowner or DIY'er. I am a construction professional by trade and I do this for a living. It supports my family and I and is not just a hobby. I was very excited when I heard that Skilsaw were coming out with new saws. But I was also skeptical because I heard that they were made in China. A Home Depot rep was saying it was incredible after seeing it at a training. Claimed it cut like never before. Being a Skilsaw user, I was willing to give it a try, because bogging down and stalling is a pain whenever I'm on the job site. When I got it home and tested it out, I was BLOWN AWAY! It is the more powerful than any other worm-drive circular saw I've ever seen or used. Plus, it uses the same motor design that Skilsaw have been using for years. This new saw tilts further than the shd77, the 45 degree stop release lever is in a much better location, and, wait for it... you can actually read the degree indicator on the tilt protractor! It is marked with black numbers and hash marks on a grey background, and the pointer does not block the numbers, unlike the older Skilsaws. Also, it has every degree indicated instead of every 5 degrees. Another sub-contractor building a separate house was raving about their new Dewalt and Ridgid worm drives and how great they were and how fast they cut, blah blah blah. After hearing him go on for about a day, I showed him this. Cuts faster, bogs down less, and gets WAAAAYYYY more power and torque. When he used this saw, he hasn't said a word - especially when he found out that this was LIGHTER than his saws. So he ended up taking both back and getting two of these same Skilsaws. BALANCED: The weight is centred (the saw is longer so it doesn't want to push to one side like many sidewinders) POWERFUL: Torque-ee!! 3.25 horsepower MAX. Comes from the additional magnetism those additional field windings produce. EASY: High visibility for RIGHT HANDED folks, yes you can see the line you're cutting, instead of craning your neck. Sorry lefties :( SOLID BUILT: Doesn't rattle or whine while it's spinning. ACCURATE: Adjustments for angle cuts and depth are strong, solid and clear. SMOOTH: The lower guard is designed well, and never binds up even on steep compound miters and when shaving a sliver-sized piece off the end of a board. TOUGH: Beat this thing however you want and it will never know it. Only drawback is the lack of a stop on the bevel at 22.5 degrees I've never been let down by my Skilsaw saws. Take care of them, and they'll give you years of trouble-free use. This saw continues my experience of being blown away by what this new motor can do. Keep your yellow, red, and orange worm-drive saws. I'll keep my Skilsaw saws and spend my time on the job and not even one second in the repair shop! December 29, 2015
