Customer Questions & Answers

what is the difference between the worm drive and the magnesium worm drive?

I'm looking into buying a new saw but I honestly don't know what the difference are between these two besides price difference.
Asked by: Hank
There are actually a few versions of the 77, with two versions of the 77 Magnesium. The higher end version is shorter, and weighs about a pound less than the other one. If the saw is for you, buy the best, the 77 Magnesium Light Weight. It is lighter, and more convenient. You will never regret it.

Where was the saw built? Was it manufacturered in the USA?

Asked by: Stoneer3
We can only wish, but the 77's have not been made in the USA for years.

Does it come with a case?

Asked by: coffeeman454
No, Skill has never offered a true case for the 77. My guess is that most people use them too much to want a case. There is one black soft one offered on-line that does fit the Mag Light Weight very well, with a couple of blades. It really does not fit the other 77's as they are longer. I keep my one nice 77 Mag Light Weight in one for show, LOL.

What blade?

This comes with a diablo blade according to the description but it doesn't say which blade. What type of blade (teeth/in) is included?
Asked by: NatsFan
I keep a Diablo 24T Demo blade in mine all of the time, but I also keep regular 24, and 40t Diablo blades with me. The 60T is great for a better cut on plywood, re-cutting doors etc.

15 Amp Corded Electric 7-1/4 in. Magnesium Worm Drive Circular Saw with 24-Tooth Carbide Tipped Diablo Blade is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 51.

Was it worth the extra money & weight? Short answer: Definitely. I decided on going with this as my first worm drive saw for a few reasons. First of all, the blade is on the left hand side. This makes sight alignment much easier for me as a righty. I find myself still looking over the saw at first, but I'll get used to it. The inline body layout was also a big reason to go for it. Yes, it's heavier. However, that weight is very well proportioned with the body lay out, and is much easier to get through 3/4 sheet goods once it gets going. And that's my main use. Besides, it's way lighter than most every other worm drive out there. I may have elected to go for a sidewinder if I was framing, but most of my use is for breaking down plywood. Plus, when the factory blade is a Diablo, that's a guaranteed hook that I won't be getting it from Amazon or Lowe's. Great job on that HD. Speaking of hooks, the integrated rafter hook is strong and I have no qualms with it whatsoever. The blade, lighter weight, and build quality/history are why I chose it over the Makita, Rigid, and DeWalt. I can keep going, but this is getting sort of long. So why not a 5 star rating? There's no place that I can attach an edge guide to. I was really excited about using Kreg's Rip-Cut, but the baseplate is too narrow and the Kreg doesn't have a place to clamp to. I talked to Kreg and they said that it was a common problem with worm drives, but they're working on a solution. With that being said though, it doesn't look like there's any place to attach any kind of edge guide by Skil or Kreg or anyone else. It's not the end of the world, but I can't give it a perfect rating. Also, know what you're getting into. Some maintenance will be involved. Make sure to get some oil for the gears, and don't forget to use it. That's not really a negative, but some people may not know that you have to do that. End of the day.... Should you buy one? SkilSaw quality. Diablo blade. Worm Drive features.... No, you should buy two. 4.5 stars -Jeff

I had an old (15yrs. of so) Craftsman but the trigger has been acting up lately so I stopped by my HD and found this on clearance for $100. I read the reviews and though I'd give it a try. Well It might cut through 2x's like butter but it struggled to rip 50" of 3/4" particle board. I used a Diablo 60t fine black and set the depth maybe 1/8" below the cut. This thing could barely handle it. Also I couldn't zero the blade out so the shoe was useless. I tried multiple times but no luck. Needless to say it's going back. Back to my trusty CHEAP Craftsman. I'll have to open it up and see if I can fix the trigger.

Easy to use, Light weight and the price was not cheap but not too steep either. The only drawback for me is that it's made in China.
