does the water collection container fill up before the pump kicks in

Yes the water bucket will fill up first. Once full, if the pump setting is activated, the machine will pump a few inches of water out of the bucket then resume normal operation.

70-Pint Dehumidifier with Built in Pump and Energy Star is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 45.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything I Needed So far the SPT 70-Pint Dehumidifier has done everything really well. My basement went from between 65-80% humidity to a steady 50%. The unit was super easy to setup and the pump operates well - I haven't had to touch this thing since I set it up. It has been running for close to two months, I hope it continues to be reliable.

In 12 hours it brought the humidity level from 55% to 32%. Only noisy on a hard floor surface. Soft foam casters would do the trick of quieting it. Or including a piece of foam to put the unit on the floor with. Good size and great features. Happy so far.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Did not last This dehumidifier worked great for not quite 3 years. There were several gliches in performance along the way. It would work fine for a few weeks, then would freeze up, or overheat. Upon restart, would not begin at initial settings. Only ran it about 2 weeks a month in a vacation home, and just before 3 years were up, it went completely out! Wouldn't turn off...unplug, and it wouldn't restart, etc. When it worked, it did a great job, but would not buy another one, nor recommend I have an old Sears dehumidifier in my primary residence, and it has worked flawlessly for over 25 years! And still going strong. I think 2-3/4 years is not good for an item for which I paid 349.00!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do not buy it The unit is equipped with a pump. Initially placing the unit in service with the pump switch on resulted in the pump not working when the bucket was full and the bucket overflowed . I found out that the pump switch in the on position overrides the bucket high level cutoff ant the compressor will continues to run and the bucket will overflow. The unit was replaced by the company. The new unit is operating and the pump is working, but on the replacement unit the pump switch still overrides the bucket high level cutoff. This is a bad design fault as if the pump fails to start, the bucket will fill up and overflow causing damage to walls and what ever else gets wet. We have some wall damage from the first unit. The bucket high level compressor shut down should function all of the time. Not only when the pump switch is off

Rated 2 out of 5 by from pump didn't work It sucked a lot of water out of the air, but I couldn't get the pump to work. I tried many different things to no avail. Returned it and got the similar haier model. Props to HD for a painless return process though.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasted 1 Season I bought it in Oct 2013 and started using it in 2014. Worked well. Shut it off over the winter. When I went to start it up in May of 2015, I got an error code EC. I called the manufacturer. They said it needed service for a coolant problem. But it was out of warranty. Almost impossible to get it serviced locally. It's going in the trash.
