Answer:
Yes, there must be a way to exhaust the heat that is removed from the room, you may be able to install a connector in the ceiling to the attic to exhaust the hot air. I did this in a similar situation and the hot air exhaust vents into my attic.

The important thing about air conditioners is that they do not make cold. They move heat from inside your home to the outside of it. You need the vent to get the heat out side.

Answer:
All air conditioners need to exhaust hot air to the outside. You might try an evaporative cooler. Also, with these types of air conditioners, the exhaust hose gets hot and that heat then stays in the room. I bought a solid color quilt at the ARC store, cut a piece to size and made a cover for the hose. Works great to insulate the hose and stop it from radiating heat into the room.

Answer:
You won't find one without a vent, it must produce more heat than it removes and the heat has to go somewhere else if the room is to wind up being cooler.

I bought one, online, once that said you didn't have to vent it. It turned out to be one I had to add ice to about every hour - empty the water from the melted ice, and it only kind of cooled a 16 square foot space. It was just a fan blowing over the ice - which I could have done for a lot cheaper with a box fan and a big pan of ice sitting in front of it..... So beware of the ones that say you don't Read More

8,000 BTU Portable Air Conditioner is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 76.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Tried 2 units, stopped cooling I ordered this unit for my garage and went ahead and installed an exhaust hose and outlet and a drain line through the exterior brick wall. First unit cooled for about a day and then just blew air out the same temperature of the room. Thought I got a dud. Had to box up and take to the local home depot and the return took about 15-20 minutes. I got the second one in and it worked few a few days and then I just put an infrared thermometer on the front and it is blowing air out that is 94 degrees. About to return it and try something else.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from So So A/C I can't compare this with any other room or portable A/C, since it's the only one I've every had. However, for what it's worth: The output temp isn't as cold as I'd have expected for an 8000 BTU unit The instructions couldn't possibly have been worse. The writers couldn't possibly have ever seen the unit. Example. The vent hose actually screws into the unit and into the window fixture. You find that out yourself. The vent that exhausts hot air thru the window has no hood so you can count on rain running into the vent hose. Also the grill, which should keep out small pests will stop squirrels but anything smaller slips right through. I bought a 5" vent cover from Amazon which does the trick. Costs $15.00 which I shouldn't have had to spend. Finally, the sliding fitting which adapts the hose to the window has one segment where a lip is on the outside. Perfect rain trap. Makes you wonder if the maker actually looked at what they did. The jury is really still out on performance

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Hate it This air conditioner is very hard to use. The exaust system will not stayed hooked to the unit. I would like to return but don't have the box. Please help me with this matter!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good portable AC unit Bought this to cool my daughters room down lower than the house temp as she suffers terrible migraines. So far it has worked as expected. It cools, is reasonably quiet and doesn't need draining as often as I thought it would ie: I emptied it once in two weeks and it drained a shot glass full at the most .

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Do Not Buy Unless You Are Trying To Cool A Very Small Closet! I am so regretting having purchased this. I have a very small room that I wanted to cool off and this is not able to do that. It will blow cold air on you if you are sitting right in front of it but 1 step out of the direct path of air flow and you are sweating tremendously. This may be okay if you plan on using only in fall or spring when it's not so hot outside but in the heat of summer....DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY! Invest in something else.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Has some flaws It does cool the bedroom adequately but it is really loud to be put into a small area. If you are a light sleeper, forget it. Also the tube to the window will not stay hooked into the window, or to the unit. This is a BIG FLAW. I might have sent this back if I had known about this, but unfortunately no one answered my question about how to keep the tube connected. So, I am off to the store for DUCT TAPE. Not a good solution.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Didnt work Straight out of the box and fan must be broken because it blows zero air! I mean NOTHING! Not even hot air. Turns on, but nothing comes out. Very disappointed. Now i have to return and wait another week for a new one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent buy for the money around 240 when i bought this unit is excellent and the dry mode is the best to real cool a room, dont think about exede the size of the room allow it for this unit automatic on system let you find you room nice and cool very glad to buy it i will love a better way to grip the plastic tubes, ps. when open the box there are few pieces between the white foam so until you have everything dont discharge the box
