Answer:
Yes, but my first one has lasted a year now, and still doesn't need to be replaced. I suppose it depends on your water and its mineral content. Here, I have water from city wells, which gets some treatment.

Rated 3.7 out of 5 by 20 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great little humidifier Good value and features for the price. Warm mist actually works, although it doesn't get all that warm. Cool mist is very good. June 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by does the job well Easy assembly. Works perfectly right out of the box. March 22, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is My Second One I bought my first SPT humidifier a year ago, and have been very pleased with it. The filter keeps down the dust buildup. Here in Massachusetts, my 1,700 sq. ft. home needs more humidity to keep my skin from drying out (and the wood flooring from cracking). So when my two old humidifiers of a cheepo brand failed in the same week, I bought another SPT a month ago. Together, these two SPT units do the job, keeping relative humidity above 40% on all but the coldest nights. The filters seem a bit expensive, but the unit I've had for a year seems like it will finish its second season without a filter replacement, so I guess the total cost still isn't high. Over the years, I've owned many inexpensive humidifiers, and these are the best I've found for the price. I selected them because they are top-rated by Consumer Reports. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by good quiet humidifier Very quiet, almost soundless. If we have it running full boar, we end up filling it twice a day, but would not want it any larger. At a lower speed, it will run all day without refilling. We keep a hygrometer in the same room, and the half speed is usually adequate. We might wish for a more attractive design, but at least it is small enough to kind of hide in a corner. February 16, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by worked for a week The humidifier worked well for a week, but then the add water light stayed on and when assembled the humidifier leaked and wouldn't operate. I wrote to the company, but haven't received a reply. February 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent Humidifier I purchased this humidifier because we use a wood burning fireplace insert and the heat is very dry. I researched humidifiers on Consumer Report and this one received a good rating. It works quickly and quietly, and you can feel the results immediately. March 1, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not good for small room The machine works well, is quiet, easy to clean and refill. However, the spout that directs the steam is pointed horizontally, so unless you have a big space between the machine and the furniture, the furniture is covered in condensation when using the humidifier. I have a small bedroom and need the steam to vent up, not sideways. In the right space it would be a great choice. January 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Warning Before You Buy I bought this humidifier since it received a great review from Consumer Report. On the day I received it, I turned it on for a while. Then when I turned on my stove, the flame was fully orange. When I looked online to figure out why the color turned from blue to orange, I was surprised to see that many people who turned on the burner while their ultrasonic humidifier was running had orange flame! As others suggested, the flame returns to blue an hour or so after humidifier has been turned off. The reason is that the tap water contains many minerals, which are released into the air through the mist and reacts with the flame. The minerals are also deposited into our lungs. The manual suggests that distilled water is recommended but considering the gallons of water needed everyday, it is inconvenient and expensive. I wish they explained why distilled water should be used and there should have been a word of caution about breathing in mineral particles and encountering orange flames. I would not recommend this product. January 8, 2016
